I have recently been riding a lot of trees in northern mi. I think its bc as i get older i find keep looking for ways to broaden my skiing abilities. Now ive been thinking about this for a long time but it seems to me like it wouldnt be very hard to add features in the woods. Like take the park to the rest of the hill. At my home mountain they have a very small section of this where there is a simulated down log to launch off of and a few rails here and there in the woods. I feel like this is a way to really utilize space at the resorts especially ones east of the rockies. I think they should make drops, mini pillow lines, and other features that open up otherwise unutilized areas of the mountain. It wouldnt be very difficult using natural materials in the summer just incorporate them all over the mountain off the trails. My home mountain has recently opened up a bunch of new glades sections that really make the mountain more fun for most advanced skiers. Just a thought. Anyone wanna weigh in? I know this wont apply to all u lucky fools that live west but anywayz.
Even out west in Tahoe, CA Northstar resort has something going on called "The Stash". Basically what you described, setup natural features in a nice little glade off of the trails.
I don't know why midwest/eastern resorts haven't been doing this for years already... it'd be a simple way to always have some kind of sick feature even with low snow.
some of my friends in Oregon would go out during the summer and do that shit to random parts of the woods that they liked to ride, so even if your resort doesn't do it, you can.
Ya i think that if they had a designer or someone overseeing it they could get people to work on it on a volunteer basis or for discounted or free season passes. I really think it would add good flavor to a very bland atmosphere where there is very little to entertain the more advanced skier.
cause then you have gapers hit a drop, crash into a tree, and then sue the resort out of buisness.
the features would need to be marked and designed by a professional. also the resort would have to take on extra liability insurance because you are just adding another area where there is an increased risk of people can hurting themselves.
also, features in the woods are only really fun when the snow is good. and its an investment that relativly few people would evben know about, and even fewer would actually use.
resorts make money of gapers, not off people who shred.
I am aware of this. It doesnt change the fact that it would be a cool way to diversify the terrain in a state where you have access to very vanilla terrain. It could be marked as a park as i said they already have a very small section of this in a very basic format. I dont disagree that the gapers would love to kill themselves here but they typically are afraid of trees unless they are 5-10 years old then for some reason they are attracted like flies to shit to trees. Anyways my point was that it would be a creative way to utilize existing terrain and they already do a lil of it so hopefully its an idea that will catch on.
i think it's a pretty rad idea. i'm not a huge park skier and i'm still stuck on the east where my only options are park or groomers. it would definitely be sick to shred like that in the trees.
