Quite possibly the greatest range of voice ever to be heard.

Her generosity helped free a nation during the Apartheid Era.

An American Icon that has touched the world several times through the power of her voice and the choice of her song.

Paved the way for other icons such as Boys 2 Men, Mariah Carey, Adele, and many others who are known for their powerful ballets that blind pop, jazz, and gospel.

Nobody is asking you to care, or even understand. But to many who aren't in your small little world, Whitney Houston was more then another celebrity who fell into a troubled life. She represented hope, love, and a passion that was not only heard, but felt.

In 1988 she was on top of the music industry. She chose to perform for free at a Nelson Mandela birthday celebration to bring attention to his unlawful incarceration. It ended up gaining international attention and over 1 million people appealed to the UN to pressure SA into releasing the jailed political prisoner. They did so, and she has always been credited for helping to give that movement power. Not my words, friend. Yes, she got fucked up on drugs. But she has aslo done wonderful things for others. And I chose not to overlook that. Many people will die never having had made any positive impact worth remembering, she is not that person in my opinion.

And not sure how old you are, but I remember the Apartheid era very well, and that concert in 1988 is the first thing I think of when I reflect on my political experiences. I'd say this is more memorable then Reagan's appeal to Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin wall.

ahh now i may not have lived to experience it (born in '93) however i can guarantee ya that i know more about the history of south africa more than 98% of this sight.

to say "her generosity helped free a nation during the apartheid era" is more than just an overstatement. while yes it was a good deed for her to perform a handful of songs at the free nelson mandela concert, to consider this as helping free the blacks and coloreds from the ruthless apartheid system is an insult to the lifetime of struggle against the system for which many paid their lives. so praise biko, sisulu, madela, oliver tambo, desmond tutu, and others not whitney houston (may she rest in peace).

lol. 4 years of being with south african exchange students for 1+ month each year in high school. then my senior year i went to south africa did a homestay/stayed in a township. and im going back this summer.. but your right i did take a class on it which also taught me a bunch!!!

so all you did while in SA and with exchange students was talk about history? damn you are one boring ass kid. I dated a south african girl in high school and i dont think SA history was brought up once...mainly because she was 1 at the time appartheid ended.

but i guess your exchange students must have been in their 30's to have a knowledge of the situation.


I grew up around mexicans and did a "habitat for humanity" tyope thing in some rural village in mexico, and i dont knwo shit-all bout their history.

please keep making these hilarious over generalizations.

its not that i would discuss history while i was there, but the stories you hear from people who witnessed all of these events tell quite the tale of the history of the nation. also the students who came to my high school each year are part of a youth center in Winterveld (a township outside of Pretoria) and the ones who make the tryouts for the program would come to the US annually to sing and perform shows throughout the mid atlantic region and stay with students from my school. they usually are around 20-30 years old. also the leader is a badass dude who defiantly whiteness the struggle. check them out http://bokamosoyouth.org/ !!!

and to say that "they must have been in their 30's to have a knowledge of the situation" is what gets me the most. ya dont think that they would have a profound knowledge of the history of their nation and as to why the the country is such a segregated society with whites living in luxury and blacks living in poverty. why would they have any idea of the history of the "situation"
