1034 American troops have died in the first 551 days of conflict in Iraq.

1,864 American troops died in the first five years of American involvement in Vietnam (1961-1965).

Let's do some math. Five years is about 1,825 days (disregarding any leap years). So, if U.S. casualties continue at the same rate (hopefully they won't), that means that in five years somewhere around (1034 x 1825 / 551) 3,424 American soldiers will have died in the Iraq conflict.

Sure, we haven't reached the scope of Vietnam yet... but we're going at a faster pace. Feel free to check around and confirm these stats.

I'm not really pro-war, or anti-war...but it pisses me off when Iraqi rebels behead someone. Two main reasons.

1) The terrorists HAVE got to know that the US isn't going to comply with their demands. I'm sorry, no matter who is president...it's not going to happen
2) Since they have to know what I said above, then they are just killing people for the sake of killing people. They are truly evil.

^Kamikaze, comparing the casualties sustained in Iraq up until now to those sustained between 1961 and 1965 in Vietnam is absurd. For one, at the point in time US soldiers were only there as advisors and numbered in the tens of thousands. The war in Iraq has been half conventional (ie the invasion part) and half guerilla/uncoventional war. Your extrapolation on the number of casualties therefore just doesn't work.

Haha... actually rugbydave and cousin_scott are right, those are very biased facts. Take, for example, that the casualties in Vietnam vaulted to over 5,000 in in 1966. So yes, I'm definitely manipulating some data there. Oh well. I'd like to not see another soldier die, anywhere.

I hate to say this, but war is always going to happen. I know this isn't a war, this is a conflict...but still. If you look at history, the greatness of countries depended on their ability to fight. France probably wouldn't exist without Napoleon. I do want to see the conflict in Iraq end though, don't get me wrong. I don't like soldiers dying, but also...they knew what they were getting themselves into. They are super brave, and couragous. I pose a question though. If the conflict never happened, would George Dubya still be a 'bad' president?
