Is america on its way to becoming a totalitarian police state?
The bill of rights was written with the soul purpose of protecting citizens from government. Our rights and civil liberties have been eroding on a steady track for the past decade; slowly but surly, America is becoming a totalitarian police state.
mmmm possibly. I mean if the government followed the constitution exactly how it was written with a nation of 300 million people shit would hit the fan real quick. With this ammount of people there has to be a certain degree of totalitarianism or it would be loosely controlled anarchy.
This is propaganda, what your watching is wrong, its a fraction of a percent of interactions with cops. We are provided no context in any of these shots, for all we know any one of these people being beaten could have just committed a bloody murder, or not. Regardless we don't know the background. A judicial system would take months to come to a fair decision on any of these as it should.
And wtf does police violence have anything to do with a totalitarian government.
None of these are federal officers, each situation should be taken up with the respective department. This has nothing to do with our federal government
imo the united states constitution is extremely out-dated which is part of the reason why there aren't many countires who try to model their constitution after ours anymore. its 2012 and there are too many "dumb" people in this country like myself that recognize it needs some revisions. starting with the 2nd ammendment.... i wish we could just delete that one. this really has nothing to do with your question about the police state but it's how i feel

The founders wrote the constitution in a vague manor on purpose. They did this because they wanted to ensure that the constitution would always be able to keep up with the times and stay relevant. Remember that the constitution was not written to provide the answer, it was written to provide the means that are necessary to find the answer. Also, there is never a need for any form of totalitarianism. Control by a just legal process out weighs any form of totalitarianism every time. The great risk of democracy is trusting that the people will follow the laws with out being forced to. In political science, this is called voluntarism, and I would argue that because of democracy's great successes, we can trust people to do that very thing.
this reminds me of a week ago... some guy stopped me on my way to class with a sign that had Obama photoshopped with a Hitler mustache, that said: "Impeach Obama, stop ww3" he asked: "you know whats worse then midterms" "What?"
Dude, this kind of shit has been going on for 100s of years, just in the past 5-7 years we've be able to document it with phones having cameras. Have you heard of the civil rights movement? You seem to be quite ignorant about the history of this country.
"White America was shocked at what they saw what police doing to Rodney King, black America would have loved to have been shocked by what they saw police doing to Rodney King, but black America could have only be shocked if what the police did to Rodney King was something that was completely alien to their community experience, something they couldn't imagine the police doing in their community... there is a Rodney King every day in this country and black America has always known it. Everything those cops did, they have done to someone else when there were no cameras rolling." Clearly you didn't pay attention to the video, because it addresses your very criticism. Over the past decade we have seen radical power shift to the executive branch (police), and that is very problematic for the progress of society and democracy. If you need me to list specific legislation and court cases that relate to my point, I will. Also, you are the one that is ignorant to American history if you think that people have just started recording police in the past 7 years... Rodney King was recorded being beaten by police in 1991, and there are countless clips of police battery from every major social movement since the 1960's.
Nazi Germany, Syria, and other totalitarian states didn't happen overnight. It was a slow erosion of rights, and the people sat back and let it happen. To quote Ben Franklin: "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." I am not saying that we are there yet, I am saying that we are slowly on the way, and if people don't start doing something, we to shall fall.
You know what nazi germany and syria's development to totalitarian states had in common? A single regime in charge for prolonged periods.
We are not slowly on the way, just idiots like you are paying attention for the first time in your lives, and sites like youtube have made it easier for you to sit on your ass, watch a 4 minute video, then believe you've had an epiphany about a topic that anyone who's read a newspaper since 1900 has known all along. Police brutality has existed forever. Read accounts about policework 100 years ago, and you'll find that it was much worse than it is now.
But go ahead and tell me I'm ignorant and that I need to "open my eyes to the world!" despite the fact that I know what I'm talking about, and you're the one who just watched a video online. Read the papers, read reports, learn history.
Why would it matter? Al-Qaeda is group of extremists in the Muslim community and this should not affect your opinion upon the religion. Religious intolerance has become a real problem in america and is generated by the media. Islam has done much less damage to the world then Christianity. Yes there are muslim terrorists, but what you probably choose to over look is that the KKK were also terrorists and they called them selves protestants. No one should judge a religion by the extremists that cling to religion.
So simple, so true. Seriously, i know that many people think that the US is slowly becoming a police state, but if you look at many other facets of our nation then, really, the other stuff seems miniscule.
Are you kidding me? Do you have any examples to back up that the Islamic religion was built around violence? I want you to know that I am not a fan of religion and i lean more towards the atheist views, but i can not stand for religious intolerance. I agree that in general religion was a way to control the people and rise to power. That said I do not believe that the Islamic religion is built around violence. In the beginning Islam was a religion surrounding a culture of war, the clans of Mecca were always at war, but no the religion was not based on violence only the culture it first influenced.
It is part of the religon to drive non believers out of the holy land. basically, if you dont beilieve, they want to dead, or elsewhere. its disgusting.
Again that is the media distorting your view. The Qur'an does not say that, yes there is a house of war and house of peace, but only the extremist version of the Qur'an has the radical statement that "all followers of the book must be killed or converted". The city of Mecca has become a diverse city for the three religions that follow "god", that is Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The muslim community was able to gather the money to buy the Kaaba from the jewish community. There was no violence, and again the example of the St. Johns churched in Damascus, Syria that was shared by the Islamic community on friday, and then the Christian community on sunday. This church was later bought from the Christians and then turned into a full mosque. If you are going to keep making statements then please back them up or gtfo.
Though I believe that 85% of police officers in America rarely even draw their firearm, let alone beat people senseless, I do think that states making it illegal to film interactions with police officers, when the government is working on arming police officers with cameras to be worn to film arrests made, is completely unconstitutional and wrong.
Just the fact that you describe Muslims as Arabs shows your religious intolerance. Have you seen how fucked up the Christian world is? Did you ever learn about the crusades? Have you even acknowledged the persecution of jews started by Christians that inevitably led to the holocaust? Even on a more recent note, the Christian cult leaders that think there the second coming of Jesus ,and then commit mass homicide upon there followers? I'm not saying that there aren't fucked up people in the world. All I am saying is that it is wrong to judge a religion by the actions of a radical group that think there following the word of "god". I do not know your world views, but i would look at all options and many different sides of a opinion before you take a side. I have been to a mosque, I have been to a church, and i have been to temple. In the mosque i felt the least judged and the most welcomed. Know the people you make assumptions about my friend. For history is just a house and sometimes the windows we look through may alter or corrupt the image, therefor it is best to move to different window and get multiple perspectives on an image.
