Renegade, rocker 2, hoji...

So two years ago 4frnt came out with the renegade which in my mind was a huge step forward in big mountain pow skis. With quick wash response turn style, 35 m turn radius, and stiff rocker through out the ski it really pushed the boundries. Last year the rocker 2 came out with lighter swing weight, a small amount of camber and the contiued development of the new shapes seen in big mountain pow skis. There are many companies out there with similar shaped skis that have minor tweeks that make them ski worlds apart. What's the word on the street for next year? What big mountain pow skis should I be looking into and why? Kastle? Élan? 4frnt? Movement? Moment? Etc. What's getting you amped up about next years gear?

the Surface Lab with deep dish rocker technology. three stage rocker like the new life (which I have) but with added edge to edge rocker. basically the slashiest, slarviest, sexiest ski I can't wait to ride.

yeah, kinda sorta, but without the retarded "cleats" so old men can handle the skis on groomers getting back to the chair. I like surfaces concept more and have heard only that the labs are fun as hell.

I think it's a great idea and personally I don't really care who patents it because honestly if it's a revolutionary design it's likely it will be on a bunch of different ski models (rocker).  I ski a lot of powder days (not this year) and I think it would be a fun ski I just would probably have a hard time justifying a pair of skis I would use maybe for 3 days out of the year.

two pairs of skis i would love to have in my quiver along with the mtn jibs, i almost got the mtn jibs this year, but ended up getting bibby pros with mfds so i could have a burly everyday resort/touring set up. But next year im pretty sure ill be getting a pair of mtn jibs to thrown some dynafits on

the name of the company is not coming to mind but the skis basically look like they're almond shaped, pointy in the front, super fat in the middle, and rockered edge to edge as well as tip to tail. they're more than several years old and theres videos of guys doing butter pond skims, slaying heli skiing, and general ripping around on their site, I just cant seem to find it at the moment.

I like praxis just as much as the next guy and the concept is VERY innovative design but the Pow board is not very innovative as a lot of people have had this design for a while.

They do make sick skis.

The pow boards might not be innovative right now, but consider that the ski is now several years old.

Not really sure what the copy cat Rocker2 is doing in a thread talking about the renegade and hoji.

there are lots of ideas out there right now.
4FRNT is exploring elliptical rocker and sidecut matched together with a stiffer flex and longer turn radius, as discussed above.

DPS, elan, and Surface are exploring new concepts with the convex base that garywyane or whomever has been pioneering for a few years.

Dynastar is playing around with a tapered, and flat/cambered tail with their cham series, which is getting good reviews.

Salomon has the BBR for those looking for a great recreational do all ski.

ON3P is playing with their new RES (reverse elliptical sidecut) providing edge grip with a reverse sidecut design.

that is a few, but be sure that there are a lot of ideas that go on in the R&D departments that never come to fruition. Those are also all shape based inovations, there are lots of complex ideas floating around with how to utilize different materials for different results, a lot of this stays relatively under the radar since it is usually less obvious to consumers.

sorry the profile and stiffness are what I like in a ski. I wouldn't have bought them if I didn't like them, so naturally, I'm excited to try something new from the same company. Is that so wrong?

and with regards to those weird almond shaped skis before the spoon, I wouldn't ride them, I'm just saying the spoons weren't the first to use that edge to edge rocker technology.

3 stage rocker makes no sense to me, but it might just be me. But no one has mentioned flipcore! I haven't skiied one yet but blister's rundown made it seem legit. I do think that not bending the bottom layer of the core layup seems to be more effective/smart.

I should show you the flipcore experiment we did. I agree with Blister:

"While BLISTER reviewers wonder about the legitimacy of claims about Flipcore’s “superior flotation,” in the time we’ve put on the Flipcore-d Cochise, we have unanimously agreed that the ski is far more forgiving than we expected, and that it holds up to a seriously high level of riding. In short, the forgiving yet remarkably stable and versatile qualities of the Cochise are consistent with Blizzard’s claims about the benefits of Flipcore Technology.

But we still aren’t in a position to confirm that Flipcore is directly responsible for these characteristics. In order to do so, we would need to ride two skis in the same conditions, identical in every respect except that one would feature Flipcore, and the other would be built via conventional processes."

I’d be interested in doing a test if Blister wants to help answer some questions. It would be fairly easy for us to lay up an stock Caylor, a ski that Blister has had some experience on, and just flip the cores. It wouldn’t be an absolute true test since the stock and new flipcore skis would have seen different riding conditions and use, but after a two or three day break in period, you could ski em back to back for comparison.

Keep a watchful eye on 4FRNT because Eric Hjorleifson does so much of the design work, so as far big mountain goes...just look at the way he skis! You might call him an "expert."

Renegades seem like a boss ski, I never got to ride a pair but I was considering them. I was between the Renegades and the ON3P C&D's, in the end it came down to which I could get cheapest. Would have gladly bought either.
