D800 specs and full release

Check it out, looks awesome to me as a nikon shooter. full frame 720 60 frames which is a first for dslrs?
High megapixles is good for some bad for others but it will have outstanding lowlight performance either way. What do you guys think? is Nikon catching up?

How can you have too many megapizels? (MP is good for some and bad for others?)

in general, high megapixels=more noise as high ISO

also just kinda useless, there are few lenses that would deliver the true resolution to make use of a full 38 megapixels.

I have a 5d, which is 21 megapixels, and I would be more stoked if it was 10 with better noise performance


and the thing is, in the past, the D700 was a low megapixel sick low light camera, so this is a big change in direction for the line

Megapixels aren't everything. As Chai said the low light performance usually isn't as good as a 10-15 MP camera, due to the pixel density. I guess I can't be the judge until I see some low-light sample pictures.

it usually means less speed and lowlight performance along with some other issues.
it's not a first for nikon dslr's, the d4 has 720/60 as well.

Definitely buying it, I've been waiting forever for this camera. Resolution is much more than I need but I think it's gonna be a great camera!

Sorry i should have taken a little more care writing that. yes i meant a first for nikon dslrs and I forgot the d4. I completely agree with you Macque, thats why i shoot nikon, when i said catching up i meant it terms of video. I think because m&a is primarily video oriented (sadly) I didn't specify what they were catching up, assuming everyone knew i was talking about video.

It's not a video camera though, it's the first 100 percent pro standard commercial digital camera in a 35mm format. It's an incredible camera (assuming it does everything it's supposed to).

This will probably be my next body, unless I start stacking money and get a d4 (or there's a new version of either cam better suited that I wait for)

They should release the price... Then I'd decide if I'm interested or not. If it beats whatever canon releases (7DII, 5DIII, 70D...) I might be switching to nikon; definitely gonna stay on the DSLR bandwagon though

For... video? Why the fuck would you buy the d800 over any other dslr right now for video? If a new camera doesn't have 1080p60 it's behind the times.

they will be releasing a d400 in the not too distant future, I believe. It'll be a crop, but it will have many of the same capabilities, and still a wonderful camera. If you're looking for full frame I feel like the next canon 5d model will be more video specific than this, although I don't keep up on canon rumors.

Uncompressed video out is awesome.

I defiantly agree with the 1080 60p and if nikon dose that with the d400 they will kill it, also the d400 sample video was filmed in portland... which is pretty cool if you ask me.

based on behind the scenes and looking at the camera settings when they are shooting, some of those shots are at 1600 iso

high iso shooting is going to become very common. i can shoot up to 8000iso and its clean and most new cameras will be able to

I do agree with this, d700 looks and size felt perfect for me, the d800 is more rounded and slightly smaller but I suppose I'll have to see how it truly feels hands on when I get the chance.

the grip for it, MB-D12 is available for pre order on a few sites, not sure how I'm feeling about the $500 price tag though...

personally, I wouldn't get an off-brand one but that's just me. I also get good deals because I work at a camera store so I can't really complain at all haha

thought I'd bump this thread with this, our Nikon rep came in with a d800 and d4 that we could play around with today. Extremely impressed with both cameras, wish I had the money for a D4 but I know I'll be super stoked with a D800! anywho take a look at this screenshot with the file size of ONE raw image, it scares me a little bit haha

What? Nikon has always been ahead of Canon. They have vastly superior sensors and metering systems. The sensor in the $1,000 D7000 puts the 5Dmk2 to shame when it comes to noise, lowlight, color accuracy, and dynamic range. Canon uses arbitrary terms to sell its products (MP, "HD"); Nikons have been known to pump out technologically superior images without the use of marketing embellishments.

However, it seems that Nikon is trying their hand at Canon's approach by advertising an obscene and borderline useless megapixel count.
