OP is right. learning to ski fundamentally well, makes park so much easier. sure, some kid might be money on rails, but all told, thats doesn't do a lot for basic skiing skills. If you take these classic "rail rats" and drops them on the top of a real mountain, its almost funny watching them ski down.

don't take this the wrong way, I'm not saying everyone who does rails can't ski for shit, not at all. i'm just saying that kids who think that basic skiing is unrelated to park skiing; need to open their eyes. it's so important for jumps, as previously stated.

and in my defense I never claimed to be good. My overall stance is absolutely horrendous in most peoples opinion, but when I'm riding down a groomer when it hasn't snowed in a few weeks, and I don't do all that much park, I relax a bit, I Slowed down a bit for the guy with a camera,because in reality I wanted a picture to send back to my mom of me skiing. As embarrassing that is to say and that I will probably get chewed out for. I'm mainly a self taught shredder that is just trying to improve like everybody else.

People sterotype when it comes to skiing, they see a kid with baggy clothes and his goggles under his helmet and they automatically assume you're a hardcore park rat, then they see you ski park and they dismiss you off as a gaper. I love watching park, I love hanging out and knowing about things in the community. The majority of my friends are dirty park rats. But for the 100th time I do not consider myself one. I would rather ski some new snow through some rough trees and bushes then hit boxes and jumps and rails all day.

Talk to many that have skied with me, or come here and ski with me once, I won't outski you probably but I also won't be one of those kids that can't get around anywhere.

Hate all you want, but it's my style and I'm fine with skiing the way I ski.

THIS!!! When I was at beaver creek and I was skiing the larkspur bowl after 9 inches of snow, it was so much fun! but it was funny that I saw a rail rat trying to ski down the bowl it was pretty funny.

Also they dont have any edges to use on all mountain terrain lol

So much pretentious douchery in this thread. Cool, you have a formal skiing background and can ski better than a bunch of kids who are just really stoked on park and never had formal training. I can totally picture you guys on the lift criticizing other people's stance and form on the mountain like "uh oh, tsk tsk that guy is wayyyy backseat, someone should teach him how to have proper form so he can ski well like me." If they asked for advice, that's a different story. But likely they don't care that their form isn't perfect, so why should any of you?

Look guys. Heres the point. Ruffles is saying that it is harder to pull a cork 7 than it is to make some turns down hill. Now in some cases this is true. On the other hand, however, it is completely false. Being able to ski the back country, drop into some chutes, take a cliff, and wrap it up with some glades followed by carving the groomers requires much more skill that the majority of park skiers have. Yes, there are plenty of great park skiers but The really great ones will be able to ski the whole mountain. I agree when you say let them ski how they want, just as long as they stay in the park then, because I dont want to have to worry about them. The foundation is important.

All I hear is a bunch of kids who have been skiing for 10+ years sounding jealous that kids who aren't nearly as experienced are tossing shit they themselves are too scared to try in the park.

It's clear and indisputable that having skiing fundamentals and an understanding of how edging works will make a big difference in progressing in park skiing, but this idea that people "should" or "have to" be a good all around skier to even ENTER the park is fucking stupid.

I started skiing in 88-89, on straight skis at a time when park skiing didn't exist. A good skier was someone who locked their knees and boots together and made wiggle turns around imaginary bumps. Kids who have started skiing in the last 5-10 instead aspire to be park skiers, it's really that simple. If park skiing, or even snowboarding is what ultimately inspires a kid to slide around on snow, he's probably not going to spend a ton of time and effort perfecting turns on groomers....and that's fine.

I don't understand why this bugs anyone. The only possible reason that I can come up with as to why this is so troubling to you guys is because you must be envious that you've spent all of this time "skiing the right way" only to have kids who can barely make "proper turns" own your ass in the park. I wonder how many of you so bugged are even willing to take an honest look at why. The truth is that all you "all-mountain phenoms" should be grateful that you're not competing with these park rat kids for snow and terrain.

This.  When I'm on the groomers I couldn't care less what my form is.  The only time form really matters is when you're skiing a big line in the outback, and that's only so you don't die.

i must admit that i take pride in getting asked if i'm a racer. i say no, and then they usually ask if i grew up in the mountains. nope... just a park skier from MN that knows how to make a turn.

stance comes down to human kinetics. everyone that can actually ski and land big tricks isn't skiing backseat(harlaut, tanner, wallisch, sammy etc).

Look at tanners body position in that photo, he's coming off a big drop thats why hes so hunched, yet hes forward bent at hips and not leaning back on his knees. if the kid in the pic below landed anything remotely as harsh in that position he'd blow his knees.

You've been here long enough, you know exactly what I mean with this comparison. Hall was gorilla steezing all day errday that time, now we have kids wanting to look like their push style is laid back. Back and forth, back and forth.

And overall, we are arguing about a single screenshot here! I want to see more videos/photos of the skier in the OP.

Yeah I agree, I really quoted that just to compare the two photos and to make a seperate point about how the body functions skiing. The gorilla stance trend was alot more functional than the backseat grom stance everyones repping now.

I agree completely, but I can honestly say I've never actually seen any ski more than... 10 meters with such a backseat stance. Hence why I still think that pose is just ofr the camera being "ey yo ey yo we up in dis biatch skiin da word namm sayiiin" and all that wannabe thugh attitude coersing through.

And my stance is gorilla haha, no getting rid of it any more, in the spine.

well the point was that park skiing isn't actually easier than rest of the mountain skiing so i used the pro racer vs. pro park skier thing as an example of that, my bad that it wasn't clear though

Both sides of this argument are fucking stupid. No one should ever tell anyone how to ski, of course, yet it is obvious that one's park skiing will without a doubt benefit from having the proper skiing technique.

good lord. i am super late to this thread but i am still going to throw my two cents in. fun skiing = good skiing. the first year i started skiing i remember being told "you're doing it wrong" and then the person explained what was wrong with my skiing. this is such idiotic thinking. there is no such thing as wrong when it comes to having fun on the mountain. just because someone is skiing in a certain fashion does not mean that they cannot ski the way you think is "right", it most likely just means that they choose to ski a different way. go have fun and stop bitching at each other.
