I learned to ski in the Mt. Bachelor park.. For the first 8 days my skiing stance was horrible.... absolutely horrible! Then I took about 10 minutes watching some old ski videos of some people just carving, I studied them went to the mountain and now my stance is great! What I am trying to say is that even if your stance is crappy but you can turn and stop. It truly is not that hard to switch to a pretty dialed stance.. When I started skiing I quickly learned that so much of the sport compared to snowboarding is technique rather then feel. So when you see some kid with crappy stance doing 3's and hitting rails be aware that unless their like 2 day old skiers they probably could adjust there stance, there just to lazy and thug to do so..

How about people just... learn to ski doing whatever? In due time they will develop their own push style and feel for the snow. Tell me, if you had the option when deciding you want to start skiing to have FUN and ENJOY yourself, would you rather


a) slide down a 55m tall hill that has bumps, jumps and rails on it and have fun jumping and sliding around while developing an air sense and overall skiing skills

b) slide down a 55m tall hill that is just pure groomer over and over again until you have learned "how to ski" properly without anyone giving you no more advice than on the street side of things

I snowboarded for 6 years. So sliding rails was natural when i first started skiing. It was easier to hit the rails then get to them... And if the rails/ jumps weren't there it would be a green square run.. So think about it;
Sliding rails for me: Easy
Parks are built on mellow elevation so its easier to hit features=Low elevation change=Easy
So really for a park boarder switching to skiing its actually IMO easier to learn in park and more fun.

I started riding park a couple years ago, I never really knew how to ski well. A year later I had a conversation with some guy about skiing park, and shit like that. He basically came to the conclusion that if I wanted to become good in park, I would also have to become a good normal skier. So I basically focused most of my attention on skiing and skiing properly, studying how racers and mogulists do it. I would obviously ski park as well, just not as much. Then I came back to it, my progression in park was phenomenal. And I still practice from time to time proper skiing.

this. park skiing is fun and difficult but I just can't respect someone who can't competently ski the rest of the mountain.

I live in utah so this isn't really a problem, but there are still lots of kids to be seen on a pow day on center mounted park skis with no poles leaning back putting every ounce of will power they can muster up into wiggling out a few turns before their tips dig in and they eat shit. it's a good show, but it pisses me off to know that these kids will walk up and down my ass in the park.

IMO people who cant ski outside of the park are missing out on a huge part of the sport. I skied from age 6 to 15 before venturing into the park. It bothers me when I see kids sittin in the backseat between features. It's always obvious who can actually ski and who cant. I've only been skiing park 2 years. I'm not that good, but I love it. Nevertheless, IMO powder and trees are so much more fun than park. I just feel bad for the kids that don't have the fundamental skill to appreciate that.

this thread has turned into a whole bunch of members gargling each others balls trying to show how they actually "know" how to ski "properly". Who the fuck cares if some kid skis backseat? If seeing that ruins your day, I'm sorry, you're just as bad, if not worse than that kid, because at least he's having fun.

maybe a shift in priorities would help, sounds like you have a skiing disorder or something, or an unhealthy mindset. No offense but if your respect level is based on ski skill level- you are limiting your opportunities in life, brotha.

If someone doesn't have POW to enjoy like lucky Utah residents such as yourself, what are they supposed to do? I live in MN and love the park, would love to move out west soon so I can get to the real deal- so I'm sorta in this category of people you unfairly disrespect...  "do you think your personal attacks make up for what you lack?"-atmosphere.

Like I said before, not everyone starts skiing from ages 6 through 15 before venturing into the park. Or anywhere else for that matter. When I started skiing, first thing we did was hit the park and "tree" runs. Couldn't even control shit at that point and fell a lot due to being inexperienced, but boy was it fucking fun!

It's definitely a confidence boost when you start to get that grip on the snow, a feel for what your going down on and knwoing how it will react, like seeing newcomers enter the icy-ass park and slide around because they can't control their balance or edges at all, and you can just brisk freely through because you have the control and ability brought on by spending time on skis.

Still, ain't never made fun of anyone who doesn't know "how to ski". Maybe it comes with a special sort of people, a bit like you, who have skied for most of their lives and brought up on it, but keep your hands out of other people's business and let them be.

Such a relevant and prudent topic! We should totally make people pass a proficiency test before letting them into the park!

Or you could simply worry about yourself. Seems like the better solution.

Hence why I said IN MY OPIONION. yes its my fucking opinion. I have never made fun of anyone for not learning how to ski first, but I do feel bad that they arnt experiencing another aspect of the sport thats just as fun as park. Just because I'm posting in here doesnt mean im automatically hating on every kid who skis park before doing anything else. jesus.

i've never taken a ski lesson or raced or been taught proper technique but have been skiing since i was 4 and just monkey see monkey do the fuck out of it. i have no idea if i ski "correctly" but i'm comfortable skiing down pretty much anything can anyone tell me what skiing correctly constitutes?

when carving being flexed into the front of your boots, shoulders/knees/toes basically aligned. If you've been skiing since your 4 though I'm pretty sure your not the target of this thread. It's more about the kids who can ski well enough to get from rail to rail and thats about it.

My point is, I hope you're in colorado now spinning lifts or driving a cat and not going to college because the American education system failed you. You write like a Russian tourist which you should be ashamed of. (No hate to Russians...)

Don't criticize the way people ski, it really isn't your problem. If someone snakes you yell at them or get them back. Don't complain to the internet.

A better skier makes you better at rails and jumps and makes you better in control. plu snowplowing up to rails an djumps look like shit, so if you can control ur edges things look good

Woah there. Before you start criticizing people on how they spell, you need to learn how to construct a decent argument. Bringing up a topic completely irrelevant to the subject (spelling) does not prove a point. have to disagree pretty strongly here. i have a good friend who has been racing his whole life and trains a ton for it and such and is, obviously, at this point a very very good skier all over the mountain and i guess has the whole perfect turning thing down. he goes into the park ocassionally when he freeskis but really spends very little time there and is able to do 540's and such with relative ease, and learned them very quickly. but then again i suppose this all depends on your definition of "competently" too. and at the same time, a rodeo 5 on the park difficulty scale is probably higher up than carving turns is on the outside the park skiing difficulty scale. i'd also be willing to be that the average world cup racer is better in a terrain park than an average professional park skier is on a race course.

the reason you don't see loads of people who are good park skiers is more because its a new phenomenon than because it is just difficult and you aren't going to have people in their 30's and up who didn't grow up with park skiing and are more likely to hurt themselves and have more at stake if they do hurt themselves going into a terrain park to try and learn to go off some jumps

THIS. Even with this shitty snow season in CO i still have had more non park days than park days because skiing the rest of the mtn, is a BLAST. Everyone always talks about being creative in park skiing, while the place that allows you to be the most creative is the rest the mtn. going as fast as you possibly can, sending it off rollers, or flying through bump runs as fast as you can, finding mini tranny all over the place is ridiculously fun. I'm sorry but it shocks me that people are saying learning proper ski technique is not important. What do you plan on doing when your body can no longer take the beating from the park? Not sure about you guys but i plan on skiing as long as a possibly can.
