Binding mount questions

A few months ago I acquired some new skis :); however, I noticed that the bindings were back a few inches from the center. I requested park center at the time, and I just naturally thought "Oh the bindings must be in the center to make sliding rails easier". So my question is, what are bindings mounted in the middle of the ski called?
