I am wondering what is better about either ski. I know the old bents are smaller, but they also have zero camber underfoot. The new ones are bigger, but they also have thinner tips so swingweight is lighter. I am trying to figure out which would be better for me, because I am going to be going to western next year for college and skiing at mt. Baker, but only on pow days cuz of school. I am 5' 7" about 140 lbs, and I would only use these for the good days, but which ones can handle a groom run too?
the new bents have camber underfoot right? that kinda sucks, the first gen hellbents were one of the best park skis ever for fucking around on, the no camber made them sooooo surfey and buttery, but you could still hit huge jumps and they would be fine. camber+rocker skis are nice and all, but i really there were more flat underfoot options out there to choose from. i feel like this years bacons would be the most ideal skis ever if they were flat underfoot.
They handle pretty frickin' well on the groomers bro. I demoed them in a 179 and I'm 170cm ish tall (5'7")? and it was crusty as, but I still really enjoyed them. I own JJ's so they were a little different but nice eh. Buy a 2012 pair.
I don't know how the new ones are, but I'll just say that the 2nd generation ones (I think) that I have are soooo sick! Skied great in pow, seriously haven't skied a better pow ski, and were great at ripping GS turns down groomers (though it feels really weird cause there's so little effective edge).
With that said, because of the amount of rocker or whatever the 169 model was far far too small. I'm about the same size as you and I now ski the 184 Blogs. I'll say that in just surfing pow and going through tight trees my hellbents were way better, but I've never felt more all around control in any condition than with the bigger ski.
Just a note that unless you're like 5'3 the 169 is way too small. Felt like skiing a pair of 140s on groomers there's so little effective edge...definitely wish I'd gone bigger cause the flex and rocker was soo great.
