never seen that sigma before, but i'll give you two words of advice with sigma lenses: buy used. so many of their lenses have issues you want to get a tried and tested copy.

The glidecam hd2000 isn't worth the extra $200 imo, you can get a pro for $250 now. its super cheap.

the 50 1.4 canon is meh, you can find older vintage 50's that are way better for that price.


I'd suggest the rokinon/bower/vivatar 85 1.4 and 35 1.4 for primes, both are fantastic!

or could spend an extra $100 and get the sigma "sigmalux" 50 1.4, it rivales the 50L in a lot of ways

28mm prime on a crop is nearly pointless, i'd avoid that.

Mine is basically just the stock football setup. 17-40 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8. Call me a gear whore, but that is what gets you into newspapers.

Does the pro have a quick release plate? and isn't it really hard to balance?

its just a weird focal length on a crop, 28s are made more for full frame. Get a 35mm.

most people attach a separate quick release plate to either, and the hd is easier to balance. for some setups, it can be impossible to balance the pro perfectly

The HD makes it easier but either way, its essentially the same thing, you can just move the plate in finer, smaller amounts easier than you can on the pro. I use the pro and can balance it perfectly, no need for laziness when it comes to shooting.

Should have clarified that most of the people having issues are those with smaller cameras, and most can balance it good, it is just harder and takes longer to get it "perfect" for some people

The 28mm is kinda pointless; and sigma is pretty sketchy (or inconsistent) in regards to sharpness

Bracket kit on videomic seems pointless to me

There's better alternatives to the Canon 50mm 1.4 IMO; great photo lens though

In regards to the HD2000, I think it's not that much of a difference. Especially when you're just starting to learn how to use a glidecam. Operating a steadicam is actually a skill IMO; people don't just pick them up and get smooth shots. I personally think the HD2000 is worth it (mine comes tomorrow, stoked!) simply because it really does help you obtain a physcially perfect balance

Except theres so many focus issues with that lens. The canon 50 1.4 is due for an upgrade, I heard a possible release of the II this year when they drop the 5d3.

Thank you for all the input guys! just got my new manfrotto 055xb legs with a 501hdv head. loving it! However, the bubble level on the head seems to say its not level?

herp de derp. I know that much. aahaha but im on the floor in my house. Guess the framers just suck and my floor is not completely level.

well, are all of the legs equal? are the all fully angled out? I sometimes find myself not pulling the legs apart completely. your house could just be crooked though ha

Yeah i pulled them evenly till they clicked and i tried it when they were all the way out and all the way in. And i know i screwed the head on correctly.

bump. what is the best cheap distance lense. I will not be doing a lot of distance video and photography but if I need to have it, what would you recommend. around like 250.

^ do you want a prime? Canon 85mm f/1.8 is a cool lens. Super fast and pretty cheap.

Which long range should i get? I want to be able to use it later when i get a full frame, I know the 70-200 f/4 is really good but It is really expensive for how much I will actually be using it. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/wl/46C76E7419 I like the 28-135 but will that be long enough if I want to film big mountain?

i say go with a 70-200. its a nice lens, also with a constant aperture unlike the 28-135. And also i dont really think youll need something past 200mm. Could just be me, but i feel like the 70-200 is your best option.

it is hit or miss, but when you get a good copy it is VASTLY superior to the canon

buy used and then you don't have to worry about getting a bad copy

Buy used is pretty much the #1 rule when it comes to sigma lenses... easiest way to avoid a focus issue.

next on my list is a maybe dakine sequence for sure then maybe somethin like a 701/55 setup and/or a 24-70mm2.8, but not the newest one.
