So, every year at my school we have an eight hour charity dance. Basically everyone gets drunk before, but I didn't (THANK GOD). My friend who I had been with earlier in the day got caught drinking. I was with him before he drank, so I didn't really know how bad it was. Long story short I ended up getting pulled out of the event by some teachers with three other kids and his roommate who had been with him that day. When get brought to his dorm where we are told he has alcohol poisoning by an officer standing outside his room. Inside his room he is pale white laying on the floor being put into a wheelchair looking thing by two officers. This is when the police officer asked me if I was drinking. I told him no, and that he could breathalyze me. He then freaked out and told me not to interject, so I apologized and shit. After that he asked all the other kids if they were drinking, and one kid who had been actually did admit it. He proceeded to do a sobriety test on all of us, and I passed no problem cause I was sober, but my heart was racing. After he questioned us for five minutes. During this time the kept saying I was lying when I wasn't, then he said we will see again if anything bad happens, so we said alright and they let us go. On the way out I asked my adviser "the principal" if I could have a word, but he said no, because he was pissed as hell. We got to go back to the dance my friend is getting expelled and is now back home. Just thought I'd share.

Sparknotes: friend gets alcohol poising, I get questioned by police in front of my advisor, I get a sobriety test and pass, friend gets expelled and is now home, it appears I'm fine

What did the ticket say? I know you can't get a ticket just for insulting cops but if you did it in public they can probably give you one for disorderly conduct of "obscenity". Obscene speech/symbolism isn't protected by freedom of expression fyi.

I wrote up a big response but I erased it all. This world frustrates me. I work in an ER next to one of the largest student bodies in America; if you saw how many drunk/high college kids I took care of on any given night it would amuse/frighten/jade you to no end. Drinking is not that big of a deal. Our treatment of it in this country is self defeating, however.

You know how we treat all your "alcohol poisoned" friends? We let them sleep. We don't put them on the monitor, we don't draw an ethanol level, MAYBE they get IV fluids, but basically we let them sleep and vomit off the side of the gurney. Then they go home around 6 am, hungover. The cop was probably just trying to do his job but there is really no need for this hardo attitude with college kids. It will perpetuate these idiot college kids getting retarded shitfaced drunk incognito to the point of needing a wheelchair. That whole situation as described was just pitiful.

i gotsuspended last semester for smoking the ganja so next year (when im a junior and can go off campus) some friends and i are going to go to where i was caught at, call into the school some students are smoking weed, and when they bring us in, make them look like tards. i know, its a very cool story

i have been telling people this for years. it is super rare that someone actually has to have medical treatment for alcohol poisoning. the VAAAASSST majority of the time the person just has never been that drunk before, is vomiting continuosly, and having an awful time. then the friends(who are shitfaced also) decide that the person is going to die soon, even though all their vitals are completely fine, and then dial 911.




The best thing to do to a homie who is stupid drunk is throw a full backpack on him(so he has to sleep on his stomach/side and cant choke on vomit) and then check on him every hour or so. dont saddle him with a $1000 medical bill. people need to learn to deal with their own shit, and stop being so damn scared of everything.

Yeah, I would totally follow your advice...

Oh wait, never mind, I had an associate who died from alcohol poisoning.

Id rather have someone call the cops/hospital, and be checked, than strapped to a backpack. But then again I quit drinking, so it doesnt matter.

People these days lack common sense. there is a large, and very apparent difference between someone who is just waaaaaay too drunk and someone who has alcohol poisoning, and NEEDS medical help.

unfortunately, in a dorm room there is little you can do to assess someone properly to see how drunk they really are - that only happens appropriately from a doctor, in an ER.

my point was more that the extreme attitudes shown by police and administration (and by extension society) sometimes beget these whole affairs. and believe me, im a police lover man. I work closely with cops on the job too, and let me tell you, most are far cooler and more humble than you could ever imagine. not all, but many.

now, in this case, the kid got drunk with no help from anybody else. its on him. I am just saying this country is wound so tight, sometimes everyone needs to relax. maybe it would have kept the original kid from getting next-to-dead drunk.

So are you the medical specialists who can explain to a severly drunk, or partly drunk person the difference between alcohol posioning, and simply had to much to drink? Or is this in assumption that everyone has some sort of medical experience they have kept up with?

my general rule of thumb: slap the face...hard if they respond and try and brush you away then they are fine. if they dont react, or generally look like they are struggling to breathe, its time to take a drive. everyone goes through the age of finding your limits with alcohol, and some freak out more than others when they go over those limits.


i realize you cant tell these kids to NOT come to the ER. but you yourself said that most dont need to.

I struggle with this, and in reality, this is a totally different thread as its a totally different issue...but yes, Americans come to the ER far too often, and for completely ridiculous reasons. On the other hand, you saying that "if they generally look like they are struggling to breath" is your trigger to "take a drive", proves that most college kids are not very informed. And you might have more common sense than most, but thats NOT a proper medical assessment, and is really pretty far off base.

Is the most god damn ignorant thing I have ever read. You sound like the worst fucking friend on earth. What trying to protect your "homie" from getting grounded or having his parents pay a 1000 dollar medical bill. I know for a fact my parents would rather pay 1000 dollars in medical expenses than have a dead son because he had a stupid fucking friend who wouldn't call 911.

There is a difference when your friend is puking off the side of the couch and when you say "James you alright" and he goes "Ughhh yeahhh nigga just raging BARFF" Because he is responsive, keep checking on the kid and make sure he is sleeping on his side, but I mean even in this stage someone should be with the kid making sure he doesn't get worse. But when a kid is turning blue and not responding to anything and you think he can just sleep it off is when you have a dead friend on your hands.

Kid all I can say is you are a fuck head. I hope you never have to deal with a friend dying on you because you were to cool to call the cops. Seriously dude get your fucking head on straight.
