New Zealand in June

Hi there!
I've posted this in NZ regionals, but I'd like to get some more views or input. Mostly because I have to book my flights in the next week...

This summer, I will be travelling the globe, and it'll be work related. I work for a company that does broadcast equipment rack installs. So we'll be in Poland for the Eurocup Soccer, then head to New Zealand and London for Olympics.

In between Eurocup and Auckland, I have 9 days off. I can choose to fly home to Canada (really don't want to), or I can fly to Auckland early and have my vacation before I begin a month straight of incredibly busy work.

Below is my work schedule,

Eurocup (Warsaw, Poland)
May 12-29

Auckland, New Zealand
June 8-29

Eurocup to Olympics (Poland to London)
June 29- July 17


My original plan was the go to NZ a week early, and ski. Seeing how I'm coming right from Poland though, I don't think I'll be wanting to bring my skis with me. However, I'll carry my boots and everything else around if there is the possibility I will be able to rent or borrow park skis from someone/somewhere.

My other option is to actually do the tourist thing. I've been told New Zealand is a pretty sweet country, and I'd really like to go around, and see it all.

So I come to NZers with a few questions.

What are the chances of me skiing park or some stuff if I don't bring my own park skis?
What are some places of interest in New Zealand that I should go check out?
and
Does anyone want to travel around with me?

The last question would be my favourite. I'd love to go travel with someone else.

i might have been unlucky but i flew out to nz on 6th of june this year and wasnt skiing until 31st. there were loads of news reports about how unusual that was though so maybe youll be luckier than me! but definately try and travel around, absolutely amazing place. do a bunjy jump.

Skiing isn't my priority. I basically want to have fun. I'll be 21, and I haven't had a vacation since 2010. So I really want to go out and do everything. Any idea about winter surfing?

Unless you rent from a major slope, the rentals are pretty shabby. Bring your own skis if plan on serious skiing.

If you want to do the whole tourist thing, explore the south island due to the season. Queenstown, otago in general, milford sound, it's not that hard to find some sweet spots.

For surfing, check out surfhighway 45 before anything else - some of the most prime west coast waves in nz. Best breaks imo would be stent road (perfect right handers), opunake (unfinished artificial reef), oakura, back beach (sick sand dune too), kumura patch, graveyard. Also check out raglan, some of hawkes bay for a more mellow east coast wave, and mt maunganui & papamoa in the bay of plenty. If you don't mind travelling a fair distance, make your way to ahipara up in northland, then travel south down the west coast for about a 20km stretch of some of the gnarliest waves in nz. It could make sense for you to head those ways anyway considering you're ending up in auckland.

Bumping for the evening crew in NZ. Thinking of touring the islands off the east coast of Auckland. Along with just staying on the northern island

Dont think you will have to worry about snow. Already got some snow and its the middle of summer. Mt Ruapehu it pretty stuning and its only 4 hours from Auckland. Turoa is the better skifeild and it has the better park and Ohakune the town there has night life. Also if your in Ohakune on the 25th of june thiers this pretty sweet party. You could probly get skies from tcb in ohakune. They are pretty cool there. But the ski feild dosent open till the 25th and its one of the frist in the country to open. The bay of islands is what i think your talking about out on the east coast of auckland and its algood out there if its sunny but thats the same with most places. Russel is a cool place out there but every thing closes up out there in the winter but if its a long summer you might be sweet.

Thanks man! Unfortunately, my vacation time will be between May 30th and June 8th. Also, I'm wondering how accessible the northern island is? I won't have a car, and I don't know if we'll have any transport provided. Maybe, I'll see how your season is down there come April. I have to book my flight in the next week though. So I think I'll just head down to Auckland and play it by ear

Yeah, there are a couple of NS'ers in AKL. if you have any time off.. go down south.. Auckland skiing (SP) is alright.. but South is where it is at.

if oyu are in south island go to wanaka and go to snowpark, if you arnt in south island its going to be shit , mt ruapehu is weather temprimaental and snowplanet the indoor plance is lame aswell

Ruapehu for all it's inconsistent weather is a really fun place to ski though. It's a volcano so if you go away from the pistes you get some really awesome natural halfpipes and chutes that the lava is made.

I did two seasons there and having grown up skiing in the alps it was a really fun and different 'all-mountain' experience.
