Go Pro Shooting

Hey Just wondering for a few tips when shooting with the Go Pro. Any Help is appreciated, and K+.
First off I'm wondering whats the Best mode to shoot in. I currently shoot in R3 which is 720p 60FPS.
I am also wondering what type of shots make a good edit. (shots above, below, close).
I'm wondering if there is a good distance away from the skier that you should film from. Thanks for the help!

Well I'm not to sure on what tips you're looking for but, stabilization is extremely important. And the mode you shoot in really depends on what you want to do with the footage. If you want to add slow motion R3 is a good option(60 fps) but if you dont want to add slow motion the 1080p mode is a good option (R5? i believe?) a good distance is realatively close. Tight shots (Close up shots dominated by the subject) are very pleasing and appealing.

yeah sorry about the late response I didn't see that you posted. Well how much money would you be willing to put into stabilization? are you most interested in pov stuff or follow cams or what?

i use an old ski pole, pole mount, and a lil duct tape around the end to make the pole thicker (so the mount fits the skinny part better) hold it on the handle, and it works perfect for me. you can definitely get very smooth shots and for everyone who thinks you cant, you just dont hold it right apparently. i have never had a problem getting smooth follow cams on a pole but my roommate on the other hand, looks like he is having a seizure when he's filming. so basically it will work if you want it to work

ever here of the rule of thirds?? use it! it will make it look more pro instead of amateur.
i just watched this in our audio video class. hope this helps! dont judge right away hes kinda goony.

unless you have an lcd backpack and are shooting on a tripod, you aren't really going to be able to compose your shot in the most ideal way. however, gopros excel at close up in your face action with their wide angle lens. a lot of times you may already have a neat composition based on how close you are filming behind the skier or at what angle. angles are the biggest thing that separates good gopro filmers from bad ones in my opinion.

quick question for you. on my gopro i can shoot in 720p 60 fps (r3) or WVGA 60 fps (r1) which one of these is better and why

720p60fps (r3) is going to be a much better quality because (r1) is standard definition where 720p is hd. the frame rates are the same but the resolution is the thing that is the bit difference

I know you probably hear it all the time in M&A, but the best answer is a variety. You have a small, indestructible camera that you can put almost anywhere. This is what a GoPro has on other cameras. Find different angles. I've been experimenting with mounting mine on a lightweight, fully extended tripod and filming from above. It looks petty cool, and really different.
Put the camera on the lip of the jump, or on the end of the box. Get creative. The worst that happens is that the shot looks bad and you will have spent 10 seconds learning what doesn't work and why.
