Long Range Lens for T2i

I just purchased a Canon t2i for mainly shooting biking in the summer primarily with a tripod at long distances therefore I need a solid long range lens. I can get a good deal on a Tamron 28-300 and I've heard good things about their lenses. I just was looking for some reccomendations. I would like to spend $400 or less.

(from what i read) the 28-300 is an overall mediocre lens.
imo for an extra hundred bucks you can get a canon 70-200 f4l. i know its not in your budget, but trust me the canon 70-200L lenses are the best of the best. a lot of other people on this site will back this, and it gets recomended a lot.
i love my 70-200 2.8 is, so i can imagine the f4 would be just as fun to shoot with.

If I were you I'd just wait till you can pick up a canon 70-200 L series lens because with the range you said on that tamron, the quality cant be great...

Cheap canon tele's are really quite bad. 55-250 is one of the worst lenses canon makes. If you have $400 right now, wait a little, and try and pick up a 70-40 F4L, its tack sharp, great build. I got mine for $500 used, so its only a little over your price point. The extra $100 is worth every cent.

yea jasper get the canon 70-200 it will be much better i havent herd any real good thing about super range lenses like the 28-300

Don't be misled, only the IS versions (of the 70-200's) are weather sealed.

however the build quality of all of the 70-200's are top of the line.

And don't worry about weather sealing, youll get by just fine without it

Yeah I was going to buy it but I have a friend who has one who is willing to loan it to me whenever I need it so I don't think I should drop a grand on it. I was looking at the Canon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 anyone got any experience with it. I really want something that is a superzoom but doesn't have so much zoom that the sharpness and other qualities are compromised. Would it get the job done.

pick one or the other; unless you are dropping 3k+ on the lens, you aren't going to get both

Yeah I know this just looking for more recommendations because I don't really need to purchase my own canon 70-200.

if you can use your buddies 70-200 i would buy something like a 16-85 or 18-105 to get those wide angle shots also then you can add a telephoto lens later on if you want to be able to own your own

Its a good lens, 28-300 is an amazing range, and from what I've seen its sharp throughout. But at almost 4 pounds, I don't understand how your gonna shoot wide on this, you'd need at least a mono pod if not a full tripod.

Not to thread-jack, but what do you guys use telephoto lenses for usually? In an artistic sense, not in a "let's get a picture of that bird that's really far away" sense. Portraits? Landscapes that you can't reach? Long range shred-shots?

It gives you the ability to get into the action even when you are far away. In example, a saccer game. You aren't allowed on the pitch, but if you have a 100-300mm (for example) lens you can still get good close shots of the action.

T2i could be said to meet the quality of the 7d. But 1.6 crop will NEVER surpass a full frame sensor in terms of IQ.

t2i and 5d2 are not even comparable on any level.
