In the last few months i have done allot of flying in private small aircraft. I'm fucking hooked. I think ive got a piper cub in my future, i know its slow as shit but you can take off and land ANYWHERE. Any aspiring pilots out there? What is the one plane you want??

Getting lost in a plane is scary as fuck. First solo cross country From 3G9 to KDUJ I got lost. Ended up 20 miles off course. Its truly scary. But Im glad it happened cause I learned from it. And also, Erie is an awesome airport. Its so cool flying near lake erie.

I have my private, working towards instrument now. Fly a Cirrus SR22T and I absolutely love it. Checkride advice, most FAA examiners want to see that you are PIC of your aircraft and you can confidently make decisions. Know your regs cold, day VFR equipment ect. and all your airspace information. You will plan a cross country and fly to the first two or three checkpoints then break off and do steep turns, slow flight dirty, stalls ect, then pattern work and finally an emergency descent and landing. Try to be relaxed and treat it as if its just another flight. Best of luck, keep that shiny side up!

just got my audiogram done today as the final step to my medical. Super stoked to start on my private licence then eventually try to work my way up to an ATP

Good luck! Same track for me. Checkride for my private is in a week and a half! Its fun, that for sure. Thats one thing youll remember for the rest of your life, your first solo.

yeah i know it is some sketchy stuff. where i fly it is over indiana and illionis is all cornfield and farms. but that god for flight following. what kid of plane are you flying year, make, model, special equitment. i am in a 1980 Cesna 152/U. it is old but it works for me haha

Thats really not that old. My dad bought a 150. Its a 1976. VFR, Mode C transponder. Basic trainer. Love the thing though. Once I get another 20 or so PIC hours after my private, We already have a 172 lined up to buy for my instrument. It has a 180hp conversion. Fun stuff. Hahaha

Im pretty sure airliners.net has one for gen aviation but I could stand corrected. I also know theres one for cessna owners with a bunch of interesting threads. If you want pure info, try sportys an aopa. They have a TON of instructional and educational videos, Study guides, practice tests, etc etc.

Yeah I made sure of this myself. When I get back from my Solo cross countries, my instuctor always asked if I used any VORs, but I always tell him I used only dead reckoning and pilotage. Probably going to use them on my night flight tonight though cause Im going through Pittsburgh's class B and Ill probably grt vectors which will take me off course.

Where are you doing your night cross country to? I'm based out of Washington county (KAFJ) and did mine down to Clarksburg (KCKB) so I'm pretty familiar with the area.

It is. I recorded my entire flight with the gopro on my head. Too bad only landmark that I was able to see was KPIT cause we got vectored right over it.

Flying Monday night from KDLF to maybe Fort Worth or Chennalt, might drop into San Antonio for an approach too but they like to give us long ass vectors around the city a lot. Gas up then back for a hi approach and some overheads maybe. I have a tac form ride right before that out and back so I need to prep some stuff this weekend to make sure I'm good to go by about noon. Should be fun!

Hey guys, maybe some of you with a bunch of civilian experience can help me decide.

I have an opportunity to drop $210 to take an equivalency test for a commercial license (pretty much positive I can pass it without studying after looking at practice questions). Will this benefit me in any way other than renting planes? Would I be foolish to pass this up? I'm not seeing myself renting out planes in the near future but I also don't like closing doors, so please point out the benefits to an ignorant military guy!

well a commercial license would take multiple thousands of dollars to obtain otherwise so it was an obviously good choice to go for that. how did that situation come up/ don't you need a certain amount of flight hours to get that?

not to sure how many people on here have heard of the cross canada century flight that took place in 2009 but it was a flight of 100+ airplanes that flew across canada to celebrate the 100th anniversary of flight in canada. my family and i took part in that in our piper arrow that my dad has now sold and bought a rv7a. i think after college i'm going to get my licence as well. op is right it is so fun. and i'd have a pitts model 12. freakin cool but kind of impractical for cross country travel.

Bump. While were still spring skiing it's time to start thinking about getting airborne again. Just hauled out the 172 the other day and did a full annual on it with my dad (I'm an apprenticing AME or A&P) and things are looking good. It's probably time to tune up my own knowledge and everything to so I'll probably hit up FTGU here soon to brush up. Anyone have any good online resources that aren't boring as shit either? I'd be pretty stoked on something that wasn't so dry to read, even some free practice exams.

What's everyone's plans for the flying season? For myself I have access to a '46 Stinson 108 that I can fly as long as I do voluntary maintenance on it. Pretty excited about that. Then I'll be flying the 172 around some and might do a few trips with it, mostly to busier airspace to get on the ball with that. Only been into Class C airspace a handfull of times (and will still be good to go, the altimeter transponder and encoder out of our airplane tested up good!) If I get some good flying done in the spring I might even step it up and dive in balls deep for a commercial license, and when I'm not flying during the day I'll be working at the business to pay for the flying... go figure.

Our 150 just got annualed, put new fearings on and everything checked out with flying colors. Im looking to have my instrument rating by the end of summer. But I wont even be current soon! Im finally at the light of the tunnel from Acl surgery. Walking full time and getting balance back. Im halfway through the 50 PIC hours for the prereqs for the instrument rating(I need these cause Im not doing it through part 141).

Yeah; and that turbo system easily doubles maintenece time. The induction system is a bitch to work on and around.

I've always been attracted to bush flying and float planes, I went for a discovery flight this winter and loved it. I plan on taking my PPL but only when I can also buy a 170, I really want a tail dragger, realistically floats are probably out of the question but a ski plane or tundra tires could still get me to a lot of places.

My neighbor at the lake is a flight instructor and also teaches the float endorsement and has a 185 on floats.

I've been lurking a few back country/bushpilot forums and am so intrigued by that flying, exploring new places, meeting up with other pilots, camping in remote areas.

Still ripping around the 172... Just finished 2 months of school for my first level of apprenticing to be an AME (Canadian A&P) annnnd our one customer got his T-28 flying again today. Got offered a ride, but passed it off to a guy in the shop who hasn't been yet, more or less because I haven't worked in those 2 months. So I'm last in line now, and hopefully I'll be getting my ride soon. Maybe looking to start on my night rating here soon, seeing as its the first step to a commercial license.

I'm starting a new job soon, it's 2 weeks in 2 weeks so I'm hoping I can get a bunch of my PPL done in those 2 weeks. best part of my job is I'll take home just shy of 10 grand in those 2 weeks I'm working.

Been nuts in the shop here at work. Super busy doing import inspections and removing painted registrations. Actually laying down some dope & aluminium powder this morning.

Also got to see a Sikorsky Skycrane startup and takeoff today to. That thing is a BEAST.

Oh man, I'd love to see a Skycrane in action. A 20,000 lb payload for a heli is pretty crazy.

That's my dream. I'm joining the Marines after college as an officer (ROTC) and hoping that my ASVAB will get me a good enough score to be in a pilot pool. My dream is to fly the F-35, or any fighter jet for the matter, once it's done being tested, but your flight hours are minimal.

Dude, PM me if you want information on getting a fighter that isn't total bullshit. I'll help you get on track.

And the flight hours thing....I seriously couldn't tell you how many hours I have. Because I don't fucking care. That is so far down my list of give-a-fucks I can't even explain it. I would trade 1 hour in a fighter for 100 hours in almost anything else in a second. Jeez, a fighter simulator is more intense than flying in almost other jet. Anything you do in a commercial airliner is the bare minimum necessary to employ a fighter. It's about 0.69% of what I plan in a flight to get the thing where I need to go. Don't let that even be on your radar if you want to fly 35's!

And the F-35 is not being tested right now, pilots (not test pilots) are getting qualified right now and they will be here in Phoenix this winter. They are already moving squadrons and doing construction for it.
