In the last few months i have done allot of flying in private small aircraft. I'm fucking hooked. I think ive got a piper cub in my future, i know its slow as shit but you can take off and land ANYWHERE. Any aspiring pilots out there? What is the one plane you want??

I no jokingly, just flew a plane last weekend. It only could hold 4 people and I flew for 2 hours. I flew over my house!!!! It was so sick

Damn I cant believe that I have just now found this thread. Right now Im working on my private. I've done my solo and have about 30 hours in my log, so Im looking at maybe 10 more hours before I can get it. I'll probably go on to my multi after because im trying to get a job in the airlines and thats what they look at most when hiring pilots. My dad and I are gonna invest in one these bad boys. Its a Piper Twin Comanche. We found one in Florida from an old guy, he's owned the plane his whole life and has maintained it real well. It doesn't have a fancy gps system and the instrument panel is kind of old but the radios are good and everything else seems to check out. It also has tip tanks which was something we were looking for. Basically were buying it so I can build as much multi time as possible, then once I have the time we'll sell it. It also helps that my dad is my instructor, he's a captain for United on the 737. Having him as my instructor makes flying so much more enjoyable. Heres a pic of the Twin Comanche, were gonna fly out to Florida to check it out soon.

Sorry for the dub post, but I had a question for the more knowledgable aviators in the thread. Basically in my last post I was talking about how my dad and I are gonna go down to Florida to check out this Piper Twin Comanche that we want to purchase. If we do indeed get it we would be moving the aircraft from its home which a presume is at or close to sea level, to the altitude of my local airport which is 5,800. Do any of you guys think that this will create any problems. The only thing that Im worried about is that it may cause some problems in the instruments that rely on pitot-static pressure.

Also is it possible to get your instrument rating in a twin engine aircraft, cause if so then I'll probably do that. If not then I'll just get it in the 172 that Ive been flying. Its a pos aircraft though, the other day I was flying and my fucking radios went out. I had to do a lost comm procedure on my third solo lol. Wasn't to big of a deal though. All I did was whip out my cell phone which had service and called the tower. The told me to squawk 7600 on my transponder which was kinda cool I guess.

No, the altitude the aircraft currently lives at shouldn't be a problem. My family biz does imports from all over. We've had aircraft of all kind come from all walks of the united states. The only problems that may arise with an aircraft that lives at sea level is corrosion do to salt spray. We haven't had any serious issues from airplanes that come from coastal climates though. Most are really well looked after and have corrosion x misted into the wings, fuselage, and empennage. Also you can do a multi IFR ride which is alot of work. If you want to be an airline pilot I suggest you get endorsed as following: multi rating, commercial pilots rating (without this you can't be a paid pilot, at least in Canada) then a multi IFR endorsement. Good luck with your flying. Hopefully that Comanche is a gem!

Questions like this scare me. As well as your story about lost comm. No offense but you really need to study, you shouldn't have to figure out what to do when you're in the air during an emergency of any degree. If your engine dies are you going to call tower and ask what to do? Instruments is even more knowledge intensive, you have to know your stuff or you can kill yourself or others. It happens every single year to pilots with MUCH more experience than you or me.

I have a bizarre case in that I never get sick flying commercially or when in the front seat of any light aircraft...but put me in the backseat and I can't go 5 minutes before I get sick. my brothers a commercial pilot and I went up with him before he got that job...really had a great time flying around for a few hours

I very well know what to do for a lost comm procedure. I just figured that calling the tower would be a good idea seeing as how I fly out of the busiest gen aviation airport in the nation. You dont wanna be doing circles over that tower if you dont have to at a busy airport like that. And I didn't have to do that because I called the tower on my cell phone, so they knew that I was coming in with out a radio. They also knew who I was on the radar because luckily my transponder was working and I was squawking 7600. And I know that I have to know my shit dude, my dad has been flying professionally for 35+ years

sounds to me like you didn't know? or you wouldn't have had to call the tower...as soon as you squawk 7600 they already know you lost radios and are going to hit you with light gun signals to get you in. or just simply bring you in if it isn't a 2 way failure... calling the tower made things much harder for them, i can guarantee that. not trying to be a dick, but just help a bit.

it's approximately $130 an hr. with an instructor fee for places around my area. at about 40-50 hrs. for a private pilot license it can be expensive...

How would it make it harder for them? I squawked 7600 the second my radios went out. I know what to do for a lost comm. I as the pilot in control did not feel comfortable doing circles over the tower because the airspace over my airport is really congested. Calling them on my phone allowed me to not have to do that.

Idk I hate arguing over anything but comm failure procedures as my flight club gets us to squawk 7600, then of you have a cellphone, phone the flight service station or tower you intend to land at giving them your aircraft type and registration, position from the airport and eta. Mobile is a hoe. We need to fix that... If you can't contact the tower or FFs land at the nearest uncontrolled airport (and where I live there's a slew of em) or do a precautionary landing. That's how we were taught.

Super stoked, just got back from doing my ski checkout on a Twin Otter. Did 3 circuits landing on an ice road on the lake and 1 on the hard packed snow. Got to solo today guys. Best feeling ever let me tell you. PA weather still blows and there was still some good crosswind. Ill post a link to the video once I have it iploaded. Best day ever. Such a damn good feeling.

That's awesome man! Landings are looking pretty solid, good angle with the camera. Your vid brings me back a couple years, I did most of my time building for my private and commercial in a 152. Super jealous of your weather, still quite a bit of snow and ice up here.

Call your local flight school and inquire about aircraft and instructor prices per hour, they should be able to give you a rough estimate on total costs for the license. Talk to your parents about costs. Book an introductory flight!

UPDATE ON PPL STATUS: I now have 34 hours or so. I have 6 hours PIC time and 1.5 hours instrument time. (Halfway there!). But instrument flying is real fun. Makes you think. I just need to take my written, get some night time, and a few more cross countries including my night one and Ill be ready for the checkride! Anybody have any personal experiences with the checkride?

It's been a while since your last post, how are things going? Do your ride yet? If not, just make sure to study hard, stay calm and fly your best. Your instructor's not going to sign you off until you're ready. I've been taken off of the Twin Otter at my company and put on to the King Air. Just have my pre ride and my ride, then I'll be online again flying some real IFR.

Bump for epic thread. Im taking my written private test monday guys. Anything I should be aware of that I havent studied for? Ive used sportys practice tests, and have reviewed the standards from the book and have at least answered every question that could potentially be on the test. I feel pretty good

Woah shit, haven't seen this thread in awhile. Anyways, got this about a week and some ago, here is a customers airplane. Owner is a Westjet Captain and this is his first airplane! Super sick machine, and its looking pretty good so far as it goes through the import process.

Whats up pilots? I posted this in the fighter jets thread, but I'm a OH-58D Kiowa pilot in the army. Its the civilian equivalent of a Bell 206A. I have a little under 300 hours, all rotary wing time. I am liking all these aviation threads and I'm wondering, is there a cult for pilots or flying enthusiasts? If yes, someone invite me please. If not, someone who spends a lot of time on NS should start one!

Bump. Did my final solo("long") cross country. 3G9->KERI->KHZY->4G1->3G9. Awesome flight flying from Erie on the coastline. Damn gopro ran out of memory though. So stoked. Checkride should be in 2 weeks or so!
