In the last few months i have done allot of flying in private small aircraft. I'm fucking hooked. I think ive got a piper cub in my future, i know its slow as shit but you can take off and land ANYWHERE. Any aspiring pilots out there? What is the one plane you want??
I'm a senior in highschool and my friend has his pilot license and he took me up when I was blazed and I got to fly a plane when I was high for a bit /claim
Aha i am a pilot. Got my PPL over the summer. Alot of work but worth it. Love flying in the Fam's 172. Would like a clipped wing cub or taylorcraft. I'll post some pics from my solo flight when I'm not on mobile.
yeah true but they always have interested me the most, and I find them extremely fun to fly. Not planning on being an airline pilot, but i think it would be an awesome experience to fly one of those.
Im priming myself for mountain flying;) I just got out of school so when i land my job all i got to do is call up my cousin to start my lessons and get my license. I cant wait to fly out , land, shoot somethign or catch somethign fishing, then fly back to truckee. Life doesnt get better than that.
my homie is a pilot for american. weve gone up a few times in private craft and its so much fun. he always makes me weightless for a few seconds by rapidly dropping altitude....so much fun.
So here is the pics from my solo which was back mid-summer. I have my license now, got that in late fall. Done a bit of winter flying, but It's inconvenient out here in the prairies because of the cold and snow so I can't wait to get back out and give'r during spring. This is the family plane, 1973 172. She needs new paint someday soon, but she's been a workhorse for us. We don't have our main wheel pants on it in the pictures, but we manufacture fiberglass main and nose gear wheel pants, as well as loads of other speed mods (exhaust fairing, strut covers...) so she looks abit ugly but hey, it is what it is.
On Final
Taxiing back
Shutdown, look at that silly kid in there.
Also here is pics of said Helio Courier, such a badass machine. For such a big machine, they can fly soooooo slow, its dirty nasty how much the guy had this thing slowed down on final.
unfortunatley hey..... Its totally worth it though. What kind of sailplanes are you flying? I'd love to hop in a sailplane or mo-glider like a stemme s-10. It amazes me the way some people can thermal out in the and fly for an afternoon without spending a buck on fuel, or catch updrafts in mountain/coastal terrain.
My dad and I just bought a 150. So stoked. If I pass my pre-solo test, I am soloing my first time in it on wednesday! Of course there will be gopro action involved! I'm so stoked.
I fly out of a local gliding club. The flying solo L-33s right now, hopefully an ASW-24 this summer. It can be a lot cheaper than power flying, but if you have a short flight it can actually be more expensive, since a big part of the cost is the aerotow. An hourly rate of less than $60 is better than the $175 of the C172s.
Also, you don't really book a flight like power rentals, at least at my club. You just show up to the field and spend the day, pushing the gliders around until its your turn. It's an easy way to get a tan.
Cross-country or ridge/wave soaring are definitely the way to go though.
I always dreamed of being a helicopter pilot but I don't know the first thing about flying haha, how did you start to get into flying? Do you take classss or do you just need the guap to have someone to teach you? +k for some info
Get some background info on flying. Talk to people you know that do. Search for FBO's in your area and go to one and see what they will require for you before you can start being intstructed. Good luck! Its my #2 to skiing Im going to follow in my dads footsteps and brcoming a commercial pilot like him.
If, you decide it's financially possible to fly after reading the hour requirements (and realizing that they're based on minimum times, not averages), then I would recommend you first schedule an intro flight at your local flight school, and start acquiring study resources. Your time will be much more valuable if you have the knowledge to cast perspective upon your experience (you will start to learn how to fly instead of just wiggling around sticks). Download and read the pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge and the rotorcraft flying handbook (both free!!!). Buy a FAR/AIM and check out the study list for private pilot in front. It will be a bit boring, but will give you a VERY solid base when it comes to rules/regulations related to flying. All of these sources will start making more and more sense as the knowledge comes into use when actually flying, and you can simply refer back to pages instead of reading them for the first time after you've already paid someone to teach you the concepts (It's ALWAYS cheaper to learn it yourself than have an instructor teach you.. I saved shit tons of money on ground school because I always came prepared and read most of the material before I started flight training). Also, since we know live in the internet age, watch youtube videos! Many people document their flight training and post it online, and it's an incredibly valuable resource (especially for heli pilots), to help you get acquainted with new maneuvers and flying concepts. - (I may look like an idiot, but I will work through maneuvers in my head/go through the motions with my hands multiple times before I have to do it in the helicopter... no sense in paying 250/hr to fumble around the first couple of times).
Yeah sounds lame but buy a flight sim of some sort. Before anyone gets pissed at me for reasons like " oh you will teach him bad habits" I've been flying model airplanes for 8 years and dicking around on sims ever since I was alittle guy. Hopping in the airplane and flying it for the first few times was soo natural. It feels like I've been doing it all my life. Now I have been around aviation all my life so that could be something to do with it but seriously check it out and get the "feel " for flying.
God damn, I'm stoked for the flying season and I'm gonna start back up this week. Fly once or twice with dad, and then just start logging time. So to build hype for you guys, here is some awesome flying stuff.
Canadian boy Pete McLeod is now flying for RedBull which is one sick ride. Sick inverted flatspin and and some serous negative G's near the end of the video, funniest face ever.
Ballsy as fuck pilot in a DeHavilland Caribou. Those wheelbarrows look scary as hell, thats my nightmare when landing besides some major mechanical failure.
A Dromader starting up. So many of these puppies locally, and they are soooo huge. I love the inertia starters on them (thats the whistle right before startup) Aha when the place across the way is having engine troubles on one and they're running, then cover your ears.
How old are you man? I started mine last year when I was 16. Finished at 17 (birthday during summer) You can't get your PPL (in Canada at least) until your 17, but you can still get your recreational flying permit if your younger, which is basically the same accept some restrictions.
Also I just had to pull this screen grab from the Pete McLeod video:
Aha yes thanks for posting this. As soon as I seen what The video title was I knew who it was and started thinking about his 1G roll and iced tea pour. Glad that was part of the video. He's sucha legend. He was a POW in WWII and I believe he stole a focke wulf 190 to escape after like more than a year of enprisonment. Absolutely amazing man.
That was mind-blowing. Flying seems so amazing. This thread has really sparked my interest in flying and I now believe that it's one of my goals to some day own a small private plane at least and have my PPL.
Spent about 5 hours in r22's so far and am absolutely set on flying, got a TIF for my birthday and it just went from there. Cant wait to one day be flying turbines, it's such a great feeling.
Holy shit this thread just makes we want to fly more than ever! It's too bad my eyesight is stopping me from that ever happening. I'll just have to do with hopefully basejumping and stuff in future.
