this happened today(jan 22nd), just after work (1pm).
heres the scenario.
Sunday evening (race) traning sesh. the skiers are in grade 9,10 and 11. its pretty relaxed, not full gates. laid back/good rhythm course.
These are the best skiers of their age and you would think if anyone knows how to ski and if anyone feels the most at home on the ski hill, its these kids. but every day, no matter what, free skiing or gate traning they dont think twice about helmets. If someone doesnt wear one, even their peers wont let them ski. its that good.
The story.
These amazing skiers are just rippin this course. helmets on. its a nice, sunny day and they are about half way through their afternoon then one of the skiers clips a gate on the pitch, ski comes off, he high sides (flips over his feet) and lands on his head (what ive been told). Within minuets ski patrol is there and takes him down the hill in a stretcher. the local EMS meets them at he bottom and they send him off to the hospital. apparently he got knocked out and received a nice concussion.
Last year skiing, switched skis with my bro and our boots clicked in, but apparently not perfectly. i skied a run in the park but the chair was a ways away, so we bombed it, on our way down, apparently i had this bright idea of jumping a 180 off a tiny roller, like come on, its a regular thing. but this time my skis came off. now im in the air, looking up the hill, traveling really fast. i dont remember much after and i didnt get checked out but im sure i got a concussion. i was wearing a helmet but it came off when i fell before my head hit the snow.
Helmets are there to protect you on a day to day basis. and also for your unexpected fall that can happen at any time to anyone. even with a helmet, make sure its strapped up nice and wont fly off when you get bucked.
I understand skiing without a helmet, i do it sometimes when i dont have much intense skiing to do. when im working, setting up a race, teaching some new skier friends how to ski, etc. its nice to give your head some freedom. but skiing on a mountain is dangerous. When youre thinking of taking that helmet off, be cautious. things like this come out of the blue at you.
Every person ive grown up skiing with has gotten a concussion here or there. every time they have been wearing a helmet. i cant imagine what would have happened if they were not.
Summary: Wear a helmet.
the poc ones are pretty cool. they keep you warm, safe, stylish, smart and alive. why the fuck not?
