RIP Jo Paterno

Heard a bunch of speculation last night but woke up today and found out that Jo Paterno passed away after battling cancer. One of the best coaches in College Football history.

I hope everyone remembers his career and not the scandal that ended it.

In my eyes, knowing about it and not telling anyone/covering it up is just as bad as actually doing it. If someone comes forward and says what is going on, it could have prevent some of the incidents from happening.

I agree as well, however living here in central PA everyone just doesnt believe it, the damn newspaper published an editorial on the front page about how everyone is attacking paterno when he doesnt deserve it

There is a lot more to this university and his legacy then this. Hear me out for one second, as friends with the family, and Joe personally, I know that he had to have his legal team explain to him what sodomy was. So basically the point is this, that he didn't know the gravity of the situation he was dealing with, and that he felt as though Curley, Spanier and Schultz would handle it better. The man was 85years old, and didn't understand about child sex abuse since that is a more recent problem than it was during his time. Read the letter that he wrote before his death that was leaked yesterday, that this has to do with the actions of Spanier, Curley, Schultz and yes a little fault to Joe Paterno. Not the university, not the football program. I live here and know a lot more than the media smears and ignorant "know it alls" know. I will sit here and say that something did go wrong here in State College, but it had nothing to do with the football program (people IN the football program) or the rest of the university. These four men are the ones accountable. However, people need to understand that Joe Paterno did not understand the bomb that he was holding. If you're going to get all pissed off, get pissed off at the other three men too. ESPN and other media sources would make you believe through the headlines that Paterno was the sole man responsible for everything done, when in fact people need to get their facts straight and understand the situation.

the fact that people try to defend any of them is absurd.

There aren't varying levels of scumbaggery based upon their actions once they found out. They're all in it together, and are all terrible for it.


If you know anything, you tell someone above you. If they do nothing, you tell everyone else until someone takes action. Simple as that.

RIP more like burn in hell as far as im concerend. The man new what was going on for over 10 years and all he did was talk to people in the school that were higher up then him. If he was a man, a human being he would have called the fucking police. Bottom line. Fuck Joe Paterno...i hope he rots in hell.

Yet he was at the front or shall I say behind a giant scandle that involved children being raped in the facility that he ran. This has everything to do with the program, his reputation as a coach/person along with the Penn State officials.

There is a special place in hell for people who abuse children along with people letting that abuse continue..

He could have been a real hero if he would have reported it and completley stopped it. He was to selfish and cared more about his football program than the wellbeing of children.

Joe Paterno is lucky he died when he did.

Icecoast... It had nothing to do with the football program? haha are you serious? It happened in the locker room at one of the football facility. Did you forget that Sandusky was a coach. It absolutley has everything to do with the football program... It was covered up to not tarnish the reputation that Joe had created. It's a terrible thing for the player who did nothing but play the game. Their idols and inspirations completley screwed not only them but the rest of the universities reputation. If Joe didn't know what sodomy was, he sure as fuck knew that having sex with a child was wrong.

I'm pissed at every single person that knew about this going on, it went on for years. In my opinion this is worse than murdering a person, atleast then they don't have to live with being violated by some sick psychotic pervert that fucked up their minds for ever. Honestly there is nothing they can do to justify what has been done, I don't care how old paterno was it's not like he was living in 1668 where you could stick your dick in anything and it didn't matter. Honestly if you had any idea of someone you knew, a co worker, friend, family member that was sexually abusing children, would you keep your mouth shut and move on with your daily life just cause you were afraid of tarnishing the program you are involved with? That is fucking sick.

If there is a slight way to justify this, it is absolutely called for to give the football program the death penalty.

If you actually read mcquearys testimony, you would know he was told that is was something of "sexual nature" he didn't say sex, and sodomy is sex dipshit. Yes it happened in the lasch building, but that doesn't mean the current staff or the players on the field, or me for being a camera operator at beaver stadium had anything to do with this. Curley, Paterno, and Sandusky were the only men in the football program that had anything to do with this (and the lasch building). To say this is a football scandal is generalizing the whole situation and people who think PSU deserves the death penalty are just retarded. The university will pay its dues legally and financially, but the players and the current staff don't deserve the death penalty because they had nothing to do with any of this.

The football program needs to be terminated, it doesn't matter....if SMU gets the death penalty for paying players there is no doubt PSU football program deserves atleast the same punishment.

Meh, you could argue it differently. In that case, the players are as culpable as the coaches. When in the case of Penn State, The players had no idea of Sandusky abusing kids. You can't really punish the players for the coaches/administration's actions.


I think it's really sad that they're contemplating taking down Paterno's statue. I don't think one huge slip on his part is worth disregarding his entire legacy as arguably the best coach in college football history

Imagine going into your senior year, ready to have the best season of your career and make your family and friends proud, possibly scoring a spot on an NFL team in the draft next year, and...well, shit. No more football for you. Sorry, kid. Your coaches fucked up, so you get totally screwed over!

Really? Peoples lives were ruined because of him. You think some stupid football program takes priority over that? Who cares if he is considered to be the best coach in college football history. That title was achieved while he was covering up child abuse and protecting a rapist.

Keep in mind, Joe Po didn't ruin anyone's lives, Sandusky did. The only thing that would've changed was Sandusky would've been brought to justice much sooner. The lives would still be scarred from sexual abuse from Sandusky

The first District attorney who had a chance in 2005 to charge Sandusky showed up dead in a river. I am almost positive we will hear more about this.

Let's see, child rape was happening, Joe knew about it. If he would have reported it back then INSTEAD OF FUCKING COVERING IT UP, the later rapes could have been prevented. So yeah, he's very much responsible, at least in part, for the ruination of these kids's lives.

This man actually makes sense. Also none of you realize that my entire town and the university have been built off of his success and donations. The money for new buildings, new technology to teach doesnt just grow on trees. It is because of him that my town is even on the map and that so many young people live successful lives. He lived 85 years, and yes about 15 had this slip up in it. Look at the rest of that life if you want to judge Joe Paterno.

I agree with the not punishing the players part but i'm sorry, covering up child raping for 15 years easily overshadows everything else he did. I mean, that is just completely fucked beyond all belief.

No one says you guys have to return the money, and yeah its great he made a couple donations, but if you're going to honor and idolize a man who covered up and allowed child rape to go on for 15 years (and yeah 15 years is a long time) then you have something wrong with you.

Penn State Football should not be terminated. The players should not have to suffer because of bad decisions by administrators.
Joe Paterno did incredible things for Penn State. He pledged millions and millions of dollars to help build our library, fight childhood cancer (THON, Coaches vs. Cancer 5K), and build the religious center on our campus.
He is not a hero in my eyes, but his contributions to helping students (Penn State had the highest graduation rate out of top 25 teams) and helping the school will always make me remember him in a positive light.

It is hard for outsiders to understand everything he has contributed to our school through leadership, donations, and time


Sparknotes: If you aren't from PA you won't understand the admiration for Paterno.

Who cares if he put your town on the map? Yeah that's cool and all that he helped a few kids out and was really good at teaching people how to toss around a leather zeppelin and hit each other, but there is nothing on this planet that somebody could do that would give them a free pass to assist and help conceal a CHILD RAPIST. If the Pope did this you'd be calling for his head instead of saying "Look how good of a person he was when he wasn't covering up sex abuse scandals." Oh wait...

you see this is the part that needs to change. the whole culture of that place is insane, no one believes the report and they still think paternos innocent. maybe the death penalty on the team is a bit much, but i 100% am behind them taking down the statue. think about this: sandusky left the staff in 98, and at that point, paterno KNEW that he had sexually abused kids. he then, at sanduskys request, let him use the penn state locker rooms for his camps, knowingly giving him an ideal place to rape children. if that doesnt make you sick, i dont know what will. take down the statue, this overshadows any of the good things hes done in his life.

It's extremely simple to judge the man when this analyzation of morality is so black and white. You can't save away good deeds in order to offset one extreme failure to do what is right. You're correct, I can't understand why you and so many others think it's possible to do that.

Joe Paterno was a good man who failed miserably when offered an actual test of character that I believe most people in the world would have passed.

I love how all of you assume all he did was coach football. There was more to him than this. My sister for example along with hundreds of other students had the opportunity to study abroad under the Paterno Fellows scholarship. That program along with others, over $4 million in donations, and simply his time whether it was working with THON to help research and build funds to save CHILDREN from CANCER. Football was his job, Penn State was his life.

It is sad to see his legacy be tarnished by this, but as the guy above you stated "you can't save away good deeds in order to offset one extreme failure to do what is right." I never met him but he sounded like a real modest person, unfortunately Sandusky had to be a fuckhead and rape some kids, and then joe, curley,spanier, and shultz all believed that covering it up was a good idea.
