RIP Jo Paterno

Heard a bunch of speculation last night but woke up today and found out that Jo Paterno passed away after battling cancer. One of the best coaches in College Football history.

I hope everyone remembers his career and not the scandal that ended it.

He was a football coach. Big deal. He also turned decided not to take action when a child was taken advantage of. That is a very big deal and unfortunately I think thats a better insight into a man's character than how many football games his team won.

I can't really understand how you could remember him for anything else honestly, however my condolences go out to his family and fans for their loss. I simply don't have the ability to just overlook what he did.

and one of the greatest men in history, I living in State College, have had my life built around this man, and the amazing things he did for this town, university, and the hundreds of young men's lives he shaped. I also, personally knowing the family can only think of the Sue, and the children and grandchildren. I will only remember positive things about the man, he lives forever in my heart, 85 years of greatness.

Joe Paterno was a better man than you will ever be, and arguably a better football coach than anyone will ever be. Jerry Sandusky was a terrible human being, but his wrongdoings can't be attributed to Joe. How fucking disrespectful are you?

But to cry over an old man dying of old age knowing that his failure in the most crucial moment of his life led to numerous child rapes and broken lives is pathetic.

Nothing he did led to those cases of abuse, and he didn't completely turn a blind eye. He actually reported the scandal to the school at least once. He fulfilled all of his obligations as coach, and passed the scandal down the chain of command, where it was lost or ignored by officials. And he did not die of old age, he died of cancer, and he wasn't just an old man. He was a legend, who changed countless lives and left a lasting impression on the world of college football as an honorable, humble, and truly good man.

Of course he "wished he had done more" you fucking idiot. Thats the kind of guy he was. If Sandusky had been arrested as soon as he reported it the first time, he would've said the same thing. It's called being a humble, caring man; something you wouldn't be familiar with.

This is the man who was offered a job paying 1.4 million dollars a year with the patriots in 1973, and passed it up for his $35,000 salary at Penn State. Over time, his salary increased to over $500,000, and he gave the vast majority to charity; keeping the same budget he maintained when he was making a fraction of that.

He was not the kind of self-absorbed person who accepted accolades; he always wished he could be doing more for the people around him. Ignorant comments like yours are the reason that Joe Paterno was given such a bad name following Sandusky's scandal. He deserves absolutely none of the blame.

It is clear that you are not familiar with the Joe Pa's coaching style and mission in life. His job was not to teach people to throw a ball, his job was to create Men who would some day become great fathers, husbands, and positive contributors to society. I promise you that because of Joe Pa, hundreds if not thousands of former PSU football players went on to succeed in life when their football career ended. Joe Pa literally built Penn State University up to what it is today, shaped the character of countless young men, and is an inspiration to even more. RIP

People can argue as much as they want about Joe Paterno, but the leadership he gave to hundreds of football players in helping them succeed in school is unmatchable.

Just so you all know, Penn State had the highest graduation rate by football players in the Top 25.

My respects to Joe Paterno and prayers to his family. You were a fantastic man that helped so many people. This scandal was absolutely bullshit that tainted your name for no good reason. You did what you needed to at the time, and the media ran away with it like you were actually doing the crime. Its a damn shame.

I don't care what anyone says, Joe Paterno is a legend for than just coaching. He single handedly took Penn State from a small agriculture school to one the top 10 research universities in the world. He has donated millions of dollars that will help millions of students for the rest of our lives. Yes the scandal was terrible and hindsight is 50/50, but respect the man for the past 84 years and 40 weeks of his life, not just the past 12 weeks of his life.

Everyone in this thread realizes that he didn't actually know for a fact that what Joe Pa heard about Sandusky was true right? He reported what he was told to his higher ups because he wasn't sure what to do or how the school was going to handle it.

There is no proof ANYWHERE that shows that Paterno knew what was going on. If you want to blame someone, blame Second Mile. Or better yet, blame Sandusky's wife. The children that were assaulted were screaming while she was in the house and she didn't do a single thing.

What he's saying is that Jo Paternos overlooking of child rape is being treated like he raped children, when people, yourself probably included,  idolize people who have taken others lives an equally as serious crime if not more so.

You don't just let that go after you tell your boss and say "I wish I would've done a bit more about that". I don't care who it is, I would turn in my father, my wife, or my best friend if I thought they were taking advantage of a child.

I'm not glad that he's dead, I'm very sorry he passed so soon after his massive fault in character. But I will not honor him as a coach of football and just overlook what he failed to do, which is not stop until he knew exactly what happened with Sandusky and make sure he was put in jail.
