If you have to ask this question you probably shouldn't be venturing out in the backcountry without someone who knows what their doing. Just make friends with some locals, my dad did that in snowbird and skied chest deep pow a week after the last storm in unknown locations...

^this. But also don't just jump out there with just anybody. I've seen "locals"(aka I've lived in p-city for a month), take people out to show off. Meanwhile they have zero business being in the backcountry themselves. If you not sure about who your talking to, I'd say spend the money for guided cat skiing. Or hit up powder mountain. They have the cheapest cat skiing. Gets tracked out quick though.
