Backcountry Kicker Tips

Hey,

I've been skiing for a long time and am looking to build some sweet backcountry booters. Anyone have anytips on constructing the actual jump itself? I've built my fair share, just looking for imput.

For me smooth, smooth inruns really help, not too steep, not too bumpy. Also make sure you make it wide enough for super steezy take offs.

well after a big dump it actually helps to let the snow set for a day so its easier to pack. also bring as many as yer friends who have shovels as possible, this makes it much easier. also don't do a quick little shit job, start early and take at least a few hours making it abosultly perfect. then let it set for a while. then huck flippy spinnys.

for a big jump... and sticky snow, roll big snowballs for the base of the jump... it makes it go faster, or if u are sledding to the jump, bring like a recycle bin and pack snow squares to make it perfectttt

boulders man, stack boulders to make the jump. roll huge boulders like you would a snowman, make the jump out of boulders then fix it up later.

1 word! preseason. its all about getting out, hking to your favorite spot and just pimping it. if you have 4 wheelers it helps a ton and if ur on the EC cause the peaks arent that big. also maybe pre pre scope it in the winter or atleast know where it is and its gonna work.

my plan for the summer/fall usually goes like this:
1. get up there (somehow, hike if you have to)
2 be readily equipped (for everything, chainsaw, hatchet, fireworks, beers and bowls)
3. clear away where you want your booter to be, to dirt or grass or just so theres nothing big that can fuck you. also cut down a small tree with alot of branches, for more stuff (youll need it)
4 with all that brush, make a huge pile, where you want the booter, this will help give it some base so ur not solely relying on snow.
5. make the pile BIG cause remember itll be covered in snow so itll be very different.
6. check your inruns and landings to make sure theres nothing to fuck with you.
7. wait for snow.
8 DESTROY

A. Go to Tahoe...the wet snow makes booters sooo easy.
B. Use your skis for support on the back while you build, this will give you a much more solid foundation until the snow packs.
C. Don't make it steep, more like just a ten degree takeoff for smoove trix.
D. Find a good place to build. Get out in the BC where some punk assed kids won't poach you, find a roller with a steep landing and a long gentile inrun and go at it. Once you build let it sit, overnight is best, but an hour is better than nothing.

For the in run I like a long flat before the booter. That way you can set your spins a lot better and won't have trouble getting around. If you have a steeper in run you'll get bucked in the backseat before you take off.

I think the best advise for anyone building a jump is to bring people who will actually work. I've been out so many times with people who just sit around and bs the whole time while I'm working my ass off for 3 hours. Also try to bring a few snowboarders since their boards work better than skis for piling snow against. And only bring like 4 or 5 people otherwise your jump will get bombed out before you get to hit it more than a couple times. It's all about the people.

1. ignore what skimack said. stay far away from tahoe.

2. if you dont stay away from tahoe, at least stay away from the donner summit area. there are no good places to build kickers there.

None of you have a clue, you gotta dig down a bit deep in the snow til you get solid layers. Then rip out huge chucks of snow and build up a wall then fill it in...and theres your jump

Yeah, try and set up beforehand, preseason if you can, day in advance if not. Best way that i've found is to actually build a mound of snow bigger than what your jump needs to be the day before a huge dump is expected, then pack it and let it sit overnight. In the morning or whenever it clears, come back, stomp down the powder into an inrun, cut the sides of the jump and enjoy!

I can also make pinapple chicken teriaki in a half hour.

Telestar youer a fucking moron, thats the best way to build jumps you fool. Check out any of the jumps in freeze and see if they have what looks like brick walls(or blocks of snows). It makes the jump soooo much more stable and quicker to build too.

we usually let ours sit overnight so we can hit it all day the next day. it's nice and solid then, much better to throw shit off of. If we don't have enough time for a night, at least let it sit for a couple hours, smoke a couple bowls or something, then hit it.

ohh yeah and tahoe may not be the best place cause of the wet snow and a thing called 'wet-slab avalanches' those arent fun at all. but if u know ur stuff (level 1 avy cert) and dig a pit it can be sick cause the snows awesome for building.

1. Cut out blocks of snow.

2. Build the outerwalls of the jump. Make sure its wide.

3. Fill it in with more blocks until you get a basic shape of the lip.

4. Fill it in with softer snow to smooth it out. Have skiers ride up it, then back down switch while stomping. This will give a good lip shape and compact it solid. Keep doing this until compacting it no longer puts holes in it.

5. Have skiers go up it and stop on the lip to smooth it out.

Extra Credit: use a shovel to shave the walls and make it perfectly smooth, like the JOI jump. For filming/photo purposes only.

15 minutes minimum, but the longer the better. Just make sure that nobody is gonna come poach your perfect jump before you do. Also, 4 is a good number. Enough diggers but not too many to bomb it out in ten minutes. lastly, when you land DO NOT turn or stop. Go straight for like two hundred feet. This way nobody scrapes the snow off your landing when they try to scrub their sppeed.

Wet slab avalanches aren't usually associated so much with wet snow, they happen usually in the spring when it gets slushy and warm, then the snow fractures. It has nothing to do with the water content when the snow falls. But you have an East Coast "level 1 avy cert," so you definetly know more than I do.

its fun to build near sunset so it can set over night, get a view while building, and so that most poachers might be already inside drinking hot coco, then set out early for a sun rise shoot on the jump. (and if it snowed over night... more pow to land in)

correct. this is how it should be done.

i would add to figure out the inrun before building. its not unheard of for people to spend hours shaping a perfect booter only to find they can't get enough speed. don't learn this the hard way.

buy a snow saw it cuts the time to build by like half and the jump will be alot bigger because its easier to get huge blocks out with a snow saw than a shovel

Build kickers on the last day of the season. Then, you can hike them for the next couple of weeks with minimal building, but more throwing down.

make sure you bring alot of shovels and music. and food. and camera and skis. But build it like 6-9 ft tall depending on the distance you are building it from the landing. If the snow is wet and eay to pack, make sure you stop out your landing or else you will just stick into it and wont land anything. Also your going to want to bring salt. It helps with the run way and jump. make sure that the runway is smooth so you can get as much speed at possible then go to work and hit it. have fun
