RIP Sarah Burke

Well, my Twitter wall just blew up with the news.

A part of me is really hoping that it's just false news. But I don't think it is.

I never had a chance to meet her in person, but she was definitely someone that the ski industry will sorely miss and certainly never forget.

just surreal. when i first saw the thread about sarah being injured i just kept thinking to myself, "oh this happens all the time to skiers, she'll be up and running in a few months." as time went on i started doubting myself, and now here i stand, corrected. such a sad day in the ski community. my thought out to rory, her family, and literally anyone who has ever been touched or moved or inspired by her. so unfortunate.

is there a particular trick or thing she always used to do skiing? i wanna throw some tributes in tomorrow when i head up to the hill.

Words can't express how choked I was to hear this. Massive vibes to rory and sarahs family and friends. The didn't just lose it's leading lady, it lost one of it's greatest icons regardless of gender. You will be missed Sarah, rest in peace.

This is a horrible day for the ski community. I got a chance to ski and hang out with Sarah at Momentum a few years ago and she was one of the coolest people ever. I am legitimately sad right now. My heart goes out to Bushy and her family and close friends. Stay strong.

wow... such sad new, can't imagine what rory and the entire burke family are going through. mad vibes to all of them. she was truly an inspiration not only to female rippers, but the entire skiing community. RIP Sarah you will be missed by all

I feel confused, angry, sad and I just don't know what to say. I really thought she would come back. Thought about her so much this last week. Why? It's so unfair.

Ski in Peace.

she changed the sport for all of us.  and every woman in this sport owes her gratitude.  without her passion and drive we still wouldn’t be able to compete.  she pushed the level of skiing showing all of us it could be done.  you are an amazing inspiration, i always wanted to ski with you.

SIP, Sarah. This is a tragic loss for the skiing community.

We can certainly find some condolences in the fact that she died doing what she had dedicated her life to and was more passionate about than anything else.

I met Sarah along time ago and she really was something special, super nice and always smiling. Just makes me think how crazy this world and how anything can happen. This is truly a sad day for so many people.


You will never be forgotten, along with all the other great skiers, friends and whoever else we've lost.

Terrible loss for the freeskiing community. Sarah's hard work and dedication to the sport is one of the reasons that skiing will be in the 2014 Olympics. Truly an innovator.

After losing my friend Will 2 months ago to a very similar incident, it saddens me that another family and group of friends has to go through the pain of losing a loved one. Words cannot explain the pain of losing someone so close. My thoughts and prayers are with Rory, the whole Burke family, and anyone else who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Ski in peace Sarah, your contributions to the freestyle community will never be forgotten.

This sport has taken too many of our athletes and loved ones. I think we as an online community can change this by setting an example by always wearing a helmet, being prepared in the BC (always take beacon, shovel & prove with you at least) and riding responsibly with not only you in mind.
