I was going to get a VW Vanagon for $950 that had already been converted to a camper and I wanted to go look at it but unfortunately I had to leave for a family vacation and when I got back it was sold. It was in perfect shape. Oh well, the vacation was just as good.

tires are more important than 4 wheel drive. I drive a POS ford focus, (front wheel drive) and invested $400 in narrow, studded snow tires. It outperforms my buddies subaru wagon in snow any day.

Dodge Grand Caravan, total sleeper in resort towns. Try sleeping in some beefed up off road van and you'll probably get the cops knockin' in the middle of the night.

driving a crysler voyager a lot to skiing. I know its not the coolest car or anything, but I never got stuck anywhere and if you are going with 2 people only, you can just through out the last 2 rows of seats and put a mattress/ anything you want there. Did the deal for me at least. And it isnt expensive I guess :P

i drive a f150 and the thing is fuckin perfect for skiing. lots of cargo space, lots of interior room (extended cab), and driving a truck is boss. none of this puzzy azz subaru shit

Get a turboed Subie bra bra it'll never let you down, unless you are afraid to spend more on premo gas.

It's a great all around car, just try to get one of the heavier models like the outback, legacy gt.. the wrx/sti models are quick but if you're in deeps now the weight def helps.

Gas mileage on my 06' Legacy GT is about 20mpg overall, if you have a lead foot- so they aren't bad at all.

Lastly, if it is just you and a buddy- you don't even need a rack- you can throw ur skis in the trunk w/the back seat down- def beats buying an SUV or small truck.

20 mpg's for a car or wagon is absolutly horendous. Idc if its turbo'd or whatever im not driving a car that gets 20 mpg id take an suv any day. Unless your driving like a corvette or ferrari, a 20 mpg car is pretty sad

so true American trucks are shit off road and in the snow. I drive a 03 Honda Element and regularly out wheel my friend who drive a lifed Dodge Ram 2500 CLAIM.  But i'd have to go with a 4wd Honda Element there is plenty of room for ski stuff and friends and they rip in the snow!

this is ridiculous. obviously your element is far inferior in the snow or off road to a lifted 2500. the only way it could ever happen is because he has 2wd and or really shitty tires.

to everyone ripping on american trucks...get learned before you share your opinion. yes toyota's are a great truck but hop in most american truck and they will preform amazingly in the snow. I have a '00 suburban and my dad has a '11 sierra and both are amazing in any adverse weather condition, so much confidence driving at speed in heavy snow. the suburban has 230 000km and has never had a problem. The ONLY downside to these trucks is the fuel economy. but that's expected with a big truck.

and finally IMO, the 4runner is probably the best all around ski vehicle you can get. although they are pricey!

i agree with you completely about the argument on trucks and the best ski car has to be some type of suv, that way there is enough room for a good amount of people and gear, and you can sleep in it.

now to the truck argument.

american trucks are great and so are foreign ones, i really like the tundra it is what i drive now, but i would take a dodge with a cummins over it any day. but i dont have the need for the extra towing capacity now so it doesnt make since.

also you could get a tacoma or a full sized american truck for the same price, actually my tundra was only 3 grand more then a tacoma with the same options, minus the 5.7. so while i love the tacoma especially with the right aftermarket parts, i would rather have a full size they are so damn roomy.

Seriously any audi with the quattro system. my V8 A6 is beautiful in the snow. i'll post a picture later. but seriously the quattro system beat out all other competitors 11 years straight in the Alaskan snow race the only reason it wasn't longer than 11 years was because they wouldn't let them enter year 12 so someone else could win. that 12th year subaru won.

It snowed here today (rare) and this is only reinforcing my belief that a 4WD pickup is the way to go. In my opinion, a shortbox 1/2 ton is the perfect size unless you are towing multiple sleds. This thing is a beast in the snow. Have been passing subarus all day (although they might not have winter tires).

just for the record, it cost me $90 to drive to the hill and back last weekend, where the subaru and roof box cost $70-80. It does add up, but not THAT much worse. The over-loaded subaru actually cost more on gas than the truck does when I move out for school every year.

^^^^^ real wheel drive isnt a fail as long as you have decent tires and dont drive like your from new jersey... my 05 Lexus IS 300 rips through pass's in Alaska...

Which means you can have som fun, while also having the space to carry lots of equipment :) Real wheel drive does the job well enough with winter tires, but since it has so much power it may be a problem.
