So I have three job opportunities right now.

I have always been "that guy" where doors just seem to open up for me and never really had to do any work for them.

Two jobs will pay for my grad school and will pay if I want to get my PhD. I interned with them and it is the easiest job. I sit and lisen to why doctors/lawyers/ceo's hate their lives and cheat on their loved ones and then I give them stress releaving techniques. Making a stupid amount of money and being put up in a suite untill I find a place to live in either Philly or Pittsburgh. Ballin out of control.

I can go to Detroit, make a 1/3 of the money and put myself through school and doing something for once instead of it being handed to me. But I will be working with kids to clean up their lives and getting them out of the streets. I will actually be doing what I want to do and making a difference in these kids lives compared to dealing with the rich bitching about dumbass shit.


While my heart is telling me to go to Detroit, everything else is telling me to take the other job. It's a harder decision then I thought.

Normally I would just take whatever came first, but these all came within days of each other.

So it really comes down to doing something that will make a difference, and taking pride in it. Or have a good paying job making more then what I know what to do with.

im sure there are kids to help in the places with the kushy job if you had free time to volunteer

The second job sounds really cool. But it would be cool to be really rich. Just out of curiosity what job is this?

I see that situation completely differently.

If you are giving therapy to rich people, by telling them to smarten the fuck up and stop doing coke and cheating on their wives with whores, you have the opportunity to instill some morality in them! Maybe your therapy will give them virtues that translate into their business or trade, meaning that their wealth and power will be used more altruistically, in turn helping impoverished inner city kids.

Bro you can have an impact on people that are in your life already while having a fairly comfortable life in uncertain times. If you're not satisfied in the future there will always be people who can use your help. However, if living the dream goes wrong, it'll be hard to help anyone.

Would there be any way that you can go with job A first, get a lot of income flowing in. Invest it in retirement accounts and other investment vehicles so you are set for life when the world goes to hell in a hand basket. And after you have all that set for you help the kids in Detroit or any other kids in impoverished areas around where you live?

That is just what I would do, but me being a finance major I see the benefit of setting up that pillow/cushion of money for the future with the opportunity of having a high paying job.

You have a long life to live and there will always be people to help out no matter what. And just because you don't go help out kids now get out of that hard life in the inner city doesnt mean you cant do it later? just my 2 cents. Hope it helps :)

You have to remember all the others in your life and how it will affect them as well (I.e. family, kids, wife/girlfriend) they both offer a different type of success and gratitude incomparable to the other. Good luck with your decision.

East coast, or Detroit? It'd be nice to help kids out but I think getting your Ph.D would be a priority.

yeah, take the first job, make BANK

then use a portion of that money to help kids get their lives straight.... a simple way would be to donate money to the place that gave you the second job opportunity... OR you can make a good amount of money, sail through school, get your phd, then quit once you've got money to fall back on and go take that second job... if possible.

or just volunteer!

although i agree with this, op's situation is/could be different than yours. unlike yours, he has the opportunity to go back later in his life and help out, after he becomes financially stable and takes care of everything else. just my $.02

the way i see it is take the job with the dinero before its too late. there will always be some else one to take care of the kids in detroit.
