This morning Jeb Corliss hit a rock outcropping while in full flight in his wing suit. Somehow, he survived and was able to deploy his pilot chute before losing consciousness. He got away with only two broken legs making him the first person ever to survive a wall strike in a wingsuit with nothing deployed at the time. Pretty crazy, In my opinion. Here's the video (hard to see, more video to come I'm sure).

About a month ago I commented on a wingsuit thread saying it'd be crazy to see a video where someone clips the wall. This was horrible. The fact he survived it is just insane.

Here is a picture taken yesterday that he posted on his FB page. He has really been pushing it lately, consistently clearing the ledge by under 50cm. Love him or hate him, as far as BASE jumpers go, he is one of the jumpers that consistently pushes what is possible. Click for larger image

this makes me want a wing suit...  I could see this as being survivable because of the trajectory.  its like the people who jump off of buildings.  I hope to see a sport of people jumping off of cliffs without a parachute and just landing like a boss. I also believe a persons weight plays into a factor because a person can only fall so fast.  its the same way some people have survived from jumping out of planes and their chute didn't open.

wrong. but thats okay. A body falls at the same rate regardless of weight, and few factors play into speed altering drag (clothing, height, body position). And in the giant wingsuit Jeb was flying (Apache by Tonysuits)his speed was fast. While he is only going down at 40-60 mph he is traveling forward at over 100. To impact a wall at this speed, even with just your toes, could throw someone around so violently that even if you survived the impact it would be unlikely that you could get stable enough to pull your pilotchute, or even find it at that point.

And usually when you hear about someone living when they fall out of a plane the news gets it wrong and the parachute just malfunctioned, but something was out to slow their descent.

He sounds like such a douche in that last video. Most of us BASE jump because it's fun, exciting, and have made good friends (just like skiing)...not because we have some sort of death wish. I think he tries to play it up like BASE jumping is something special when really it's just another activity, only it takes more time, money, and careful attention to detail to get into it.

All other things being the same, Hope he heals fast. He's an important part of the sport.

Agree. Just like Shane, Coombs, and so many others have pushed skiing, Jeb is really one of the many who are pushing BASE to new levels. Here is the video since they took the other one down. He clipped with his feet and broke both ankles. Required two surgeries but he is fine and in high spirits. Crazy lucky. So many things could go wrong when you have to pull from an unstable position (ie. Wall strike, bridle wrap, line twists, total malfunction, low pull, no pull, etc.) He's lucky.
