Tree Well Burial Vid

Might be a repost but worth checking out if you haven't seen it before. Tree well took out a seasoned oldschooler at Crystal last year. Keep it in mind when firing up the goods that La Nina may deliver over the remainder of the season.

That video shows how important it is to be educated when skiing in the backcountry. Hell skiing inbounds at most places can be fatal if you aren't educated enough.

Tree wells can kill you just like an avalanche.

Tree wells are absolutely terrifying. The worst part- they're as prevalent inbounds as they are out of bounds.

i want to know why only one person out of 7 had a shovel! that was terrible technique and leadership on the guides part. this should be shown as a negative video what not to do when you have six people to dig someone out of a tree well

Definitely been stuck in a tree well before. Terrible experience when youre just skiing along and basically get swallowed.

i fell in a big ass tree well and was laughing. but it took me like 15 minutues to get myself out, so it wasnt tooo funny in the end, at times i thought i couldnt get out

worst is when its frsh pow and you knock 100 pounds of snow off the branches and that lands on top of you. this vid kinda looks like a setup... but either way, yeah people die in tree wells it happens. grab the branches if you think your going in so you dont go head first. ubside down in a treewell sucks more than having obama as pres

yea tree wells are sketchy. the guy who got buried last year at Crystal was an amazing skier and got buried on a pretty easy run inbounds. scary stuff.

I got stuck in a tree well in-bounds at vail skiing WOW. Wasnt a fun experience but I knew how to land so I didnt go head first and thankfully I landed somewhat feet first. Only took me ten min to get out. It wasnt a life threatening situation at the time, but sure as hell scared the living piss out of me knowing how bad it really could get. Scary stuff.

Yeah - the folks in the vid definitely don' have it dialed as well as some folks posting here, but the average person doesn't have quite as much training and I think the odds are that most real-life incidents are like.

I've been in a couple of full-tilt rescue situations while climbing and whitewater kayaking and both experiences were super humbling. Even though just about everyone involved had at least some training and knew what they were supposed to do the combination of adrenaline, desperation, and whatever extra complications that mother nature has introduced into the equation can make it way tougher for everyone to coordinate and execute.

I've been skiing a long time and wasn't even aware of tree-wells for the first ten years, and didn't really take them seriously for the next ten - but that's changed and I've made some minor tweaks to the way I operate after getting a bit more educated.

Speaking of which, Stevens has a pretty good overview/summary for folks that are interested. If you take 30 seconds to look it over you'll be way ahead of where I was when I was younger.
