ha, i can't believe that happend to a ship with such advanced radar and such onboard. someone screwed up. there's a video on BBC somewhere where the people talking sond really annoyed that this happened.

I think its a similar incident to that of the sinking of a cruise ship in santorini not that long ago, the reef was charted wrong and therefore the ship hit it but it does seem like the concordia here was some distance off course. What is more horrific is the failing of the crew to send out a mayday call untill one hour after the ship struck the rock and also the fact that the captain and first officer left the ship before all passengers had safely abandoned ship. (Maritime law states that the captain cannot leave the ship untill either all passengers are safely off the ship or it isnt possible for him/her to stay onboard.)

it said the electric generators went, and if those go you loose steering and all control of the engines so it may not have been the captains fault.

The news have it wrong, electrics went after the ship struck the reef and steerage runs off backup generators anyway. The captain sailed the ship close to the island (over a period of one hour) after they had hit the reef.
