I realized that there are an incredibly wide array of people on this site....so I got to thinking it could be cool to write questions for specific nationalities or regions (South, West or East of NA).

Unsure of relevance, but are there any New Yorkers' here that are mad about the city? I went to Mt. Hood a couple summers ago and some Canadian girl asked me where I was from. I said New York, and she's like "OHHH I have cousins in Brooklyn!". I said that I live about 350 miles north of BK. She's like "WOOAH, THAT'S A HUGE CITY!!!!!!"
Took everything I had to restrain myself from cutting her trachea out with my ski pole...

So, don't fucking forget about upstate.

Well, because of Bush's "No Child Left Behind" your "obligatory school system" (middle school / high school) is considered to be one of the easiest, less advanced, under performing, less challenging educational system than most of the other advanced countries.

It's a known fact by now, but I just can't wrap my head around why the US keep doing nothing about it.

When I was in Australia and New Zealand the dollar coins drove me crazy. You can't put coins in your wallet, it makes them so easy to lose, and makes things so difficult when you're at a bar. They got mixed in with the rest of my coins that I had little to no use for. Such a pain in the ass.

So I'll rephrase your question. Do you like your stupid $1 coins from wherever you hail?

That question requires an answer worthy of it's own thread. But, while I agree with you, the American education system as a whole is terrible compared to the rest of the world, not EVERY American receives a poor high school education.

I wouldnt say my english is that good, but here in germany in "highschool" (grade 5 through 12) we learn at least 2 other languages (now this doesnt make you speak them perfectly, but sure helps. MOstly its like English + French, Portuguese, Spanish)
Also, I personally like to watch every movie in English (if thats the original language), skype with norwegians, russians, dutch people in english at least once a day and visited the US for a total of like 2 years.

But in general I guess mostly a good school education and several trips to US/England for learning the language better + watchin Tv shows and movies.

ohh and I really have to sign the thing about the american school system. I visited like 4 different school, staying there for a minimum of 6 weeks each and I thought it was pretty bad in comparison to german school (how the hell can a german 8th grader without any previous education be the best in US history class)

for me it's primarily because of the television shows, in belgium we don't dub foreign shows but use subtitles instead, which is excellent for learning the language and expressions.
Secondly, we're taught 3 different languages (besides dutch) at school, usually english, french and german or spanish (i got german)
And third, newschoolers and the internet in general; are excellent media to learn the language ....

Now a question for the americans, how come in a thread where you can ask any nationality any question you want, 90% of your questions are directed towards your own country ?
(Different states =/= different nationality ....)

You guys do know there are other countries in the world beside the US of A, right ?

not exactly a question but a kinda funny (also kinda sad) story:
happend to me exactly like this:
I was on a an exchange in St.Louis for a few weeks and part of the program was to visit a local elementary school and answer some questions the kids had.
It all started out pretty normal with questions about the Autobahn, houses in Germany, wether or not we have McDonalds and so on.
In the end, the teacher decided to ask me some questions and thats when things became kinda weird...
First she seriously asked if it was hard to live with Hitler as dictator. At first I was like "wtf does she want from me??? is she like trolling or what?", but then I realized that she was totally serious and had to start laughing. She didnt really get it though, as her next question was, if the Berlin Wall is really locking out half of Germany. At that point I just left...

Now I was kinda wondering how you let people like that teach your children...
and who to blame (I for myself blame American newspapers and Tv news, since as far as I experienced, it is really hard to get info on stuff hapening outside of the US.)
