Hmc40 vs. 70-200 f/4L

So I'm mostly a skater/skate filmer, but I have a couple buddies that are super good at skiing, and sometimes I snowboard with them to film. Well awhile ago we were filming and decided to get them more recognition, we should start a little production/media company and come out with a full length and a bunch of edits and stuff. Anyway, I've been working on the promo with the footage I have, but they ski a lot of pow and backcountry stuff, and I realized I need to get some nice tele shots from like across a valley or whatever. The problem is, I shoot on a 60d and the only lens I have at the moment is a tamron 17-50 2.8 VC. As you can expect, the focal length isn't gonna fly. So my dilemme here is do I save for like months and blow a grand or whatever on the 70-200 f/4L, or do I sell my skate camera setup (dvx100A/MK2) and buy an hmc40 for those distant zoom shots that I can also film skating with? My biggest issues are: -lowlight on hmc40 SUCKS ASS -I'm not a huge fan of filming skating HD -I'm in the middle of a full length skate movie as well that is primarily shot in SD, so how afwul willl it look if I mix in HD footage? Anyways, any advice is appreciated, although I'm leaning towards the hmc Thanks, Brennan

the dvx's low light isn't much better... plus you have a 60d so why would you care?

whatchu loling about? And yeah that lowlight thing is a good point, I cant stand it on my dvx. I think I'll go hmc, and yes I am already on perception haha

ehh, not so much if you watch enough skate videos. It's not so much the quality as it is aspect ratio, you get way too many headcuts when filming fisheye, and it bothers the hell out of me. It's kind of a skate culture thing. But I've been there, used to film with a t2i setup, and I've had an hmc before, it's not that bad. I'll get used to it, but it's kind of a whole different style of filming

I have never understood why so many skate filmers are stuck in this mode where they are against HD.... A friend of mine paid like two grand for some panasonic dvc camera and it baffled me. I think the whole follow cam fisheye in SD is wayyyy overdone. more people need to make skate edits look nicer.

Maybe if you're not that good at filming. Technically, you get a much wider native image with HD and with a big ole fisheye on that guy you're going to have the same field of view if not even wider FOV than the FOV of a vx21k with a death lens at the same distance from the subject.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I'm against it, in fact I love skating in HD, only it's just a whole different ballgame. Videos like Nike's debacle, Transworld's Hallelujah, the upcoming girl and chocolate video- all shot in HD, all fucking sick. But they have a whole different feel than your standard vx1/mk1 videos. They tend to rely much less on fisheye, and have a lot slower of an editing pace. And it's not just about width, it's about distortion, and also that in 16/9 fisheye, when getting all of your skater in the shot, you have all this empty space on the sides, and its just not fun to watch all the time. i guess it's just personal preference, but it's really hard to watch a super hesh bowl skater or something in HD without all that gritty fast-paced distortion and those warm colors. And in case your wondering, I have shot HD skating, for awhile too, I made an entire full part, I just got sick of it. But anyways, I guess SD is dying either way, so I might as well hop back on the HD train while my dvx is still worth something. Thanks for your guys' input!

skaters should develop a 1080x1080 image sensor. square and HD.
