Friends, Sarah Burke was seriously injured today and is currently being treated in Salt Lake City. Her husband, Rory Bushfield, and her mother are trying to fly from YVR tonight to see her. In that last article from grindtv it states that patrol resuscitated her at the site, and that she is in a coma.

Coma can literally be anything, its so difficult to tell anything off such limited information. CR was in a coma for a while and he made an amazing comeback (RIP), its certainly possible that she'll wake up in a week or two and start making her recovery. There are also medically induced comas, which they might be using to keep her stable. Medicine is an amazing science and doctors these days are capable of such great things.

Based off that last article from grind it sounds like they've stabilized her, and she was not rushed into surgery, both of which are good things.

The best thing we can do is keep thinking positively and sending messages of support via her Facebook page.

SAINTE-ADÈLE, QUEBEC– Canadian National Halfpipe Team member Sarah Burke was injured in a halfpipe training incident in Park City, UT yesterday. Sarah is currently listed in critical condition in the hospital’s Neuro Critical Care Unit.

“Sarah sustained serious injuries and remains intubated and sedated in critical condition,” said Safdar Ansari, M.D., a neurointensivist with University of Utah Health Care.

Sarah’s husband Rory Bushfield and her family are by her bedside and wish to express their sincere thanks to everyone, all over the world, for their heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. “Sarah is a very strong young woman and she will most certainly fight to recover,” said Bushfield.

Sarah’s family has asked that fans and media respect their privacy during this difficult time. Sarah’s friends and fans are encouraged to post their well wishes on Sarah’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sarah-Burke.

The 28-year-old from Squamish, B.C. fell during a training session at a personal sponsor event. She was airlifted to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

“This is an extremely unfortunate situation and we are awaiting further word on Sarah’s condition,” said Canadian Freestyle CEO Peter Judge.

To partially answer some of the questions from above, and shed some light on this very sad situation-

Coma is a loosely defined term as used by the media. What you have to understand (and I don't really know about any specifics about her injury, including someone saying that she had CPR for a period of time) is that head injuries are very hard to treat and evaluate. Its not like stopping bleeding with some stitches or something. Sometimes its hard to even see with x-rays and other imaging what if anything had happened to the brain.

What happens in a situation like this is usually a variation of the following.

-The patient injures themselves, usually from the head taking a blow with something, although not always. Sometimes the force involved in a sudden change of direction (i.e. whiplash, especially in the elderly) can cause the brain to impact the inside of the skull, causing an injury exactly the same to one where the head hits something. Sometimes its a significant impact, other times it can be a minor mechanism that really hurts someone, like falling from a standing height.
-They usually right off of the bat have an altered level of consciousness. Meaning not appropriately awake. There are various methods of measuring consciousness that medical crews use. For them to fly her out of the mountain, she was more than likely significantly altered.
-This is where it gets funny. The measurements of consciousness are rudimentary as far as predicting the severity of the actual injury, or the prognosis of the injury. However, they have some bearing. There is a threshold that gets crossed (with how altered a person is) eventually where someone gets intubated however, and that indicates that the injury was significant. The point of intubation is to "protect" the patient's airway. Having the tube in the windpipe keeps the patient breathing effectively (through a ventilator) and helps prevent choking, things that a brain injured person would not be able to do for themselves.
-To be intubated, you generally need some sedation, as its an irritating thing to have the tube in your throat, even if you are unconscious. So doctors will give a continuous infusion of medicine that keeps you asleep, similar/same agents used by anesthesiologists when they put you to sleep in an OR. These also do double duty for helping the injured person heal through rest. However, when a person is being chemically sedated, their neurological status cannot be effectively evaluated, compounding the difficulty of assessing the persons degree of injury or impairment. It can be a couple of days with these medicines, or sometimes much much longer. The process for removal of the tube and sedation agents and all the other supportive care is much more complicated and multifactoral, and frankly well above my pay grade.

Not disagreeing with the CPR bit because he could have read that somewhere but just so its clear, resuscitation does not automatically mean CPR. To resuscitate is to simply bring back to strength, or something to that effect. In the medical field we resuscitate people all the time through whatever interventions we perform. A common term that we use around the ER for dehydrated people is "fluid resuscitation", meaning you get an IV, get rehydrated, and go along your merry way.

(Reuters) - Relatives of champion Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke, critically injured in a fall last week, abruptly canceled a news conference they had planned for Monday to provide an update on her condition.

The briefing scheduled at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City was to have been the first on Burke's medical status since she suffered a traumatic brain injury last Tuesday during a half-pipe run at Park City Mountain Resort.

The 29-year-old athlete, an early favorite to win an Olympic gold medal at the 2014 Winter Games, underwent surgery on Wednesday but as of Friday doctors said she remained in critical condition with an uncertain prognosis.

On Monday, reporters who gathered at the hospital for a formal update were handed a statement from her family instead.

It said her husband and fellow skier, Rory Bushfield, and other members of the family met on Sunday night with physicians "to discuss the results of Sarah's most recent neurological tests and assessments."

"Based on the information they received, we regret to inform you that they have decided to cancel today's press conference in order for further tests to be conducted this morning and in the coming days," the statement said.

The family asked that the media "respect their privacy" and said future updates would be released via Burke's website, www.sarahburkeski.com.

Few details have been released about the accident.

Peter Judge, chief executive of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association, said she was not attempting a new trick or "anything out of the norm" at the time of her spill.

Burke, considered one of the world's leading half-pipe skiers and an ambassador for her sport, has reached the podium at every career World Cup start and is a four-time champion at the X-Games.

She was expected to be a top contender for the gold medal when freestyle half-pipe makes its debut at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.


hopefully she'll be ok. But sadly this isn't particularly promising. I guess all we can do is wait and keep her in our thoughts.

Not at all true, it varies from case to case. There are no factual statistics on coma survival (natural or medically induced) You are an idiot. Stop seeking attention from an ignorant comment made about a tragic event.
