I dont see a lack of jobs. Just a lazy society.

I just graduated my operator engineering program (trade school) and have been applying for jobs. I’ve been on craigslist, indeed.com etc. and I see tons of different types of jobs. The state is hiring (california) The government is hiring and so are many different industries. It is not a lack of work, it is this bullshit generation that has been raised on video games and expects everything and works for nothing. I was there, I got out of that shit and now I am applying for jobs in the $50+ range with a loaded resume. But I had to put in work, not only in school but to pay my tuition. Am I wrong? The nationwide sense of entitlement is through the roof. Also, can we begin the discussion on why it may not be worth it to go to college and get that English degree, art history degree….What a fucking waste of time and $$. /Rant.

Some people need to be spoonfed.

Towards the college idea, it's like an investment: put your money in the right place and it'll pay off, but if you don't invest properly, don't expect to make a big return on it...some people are fine just getting the experience and knowledge of a liberal arts degree (history, english, etc), but know that you probably won't be as well off financially as with a degree in the sciences.

i agree to a point. we are in need of more skilled labor to be sure, but blaming our entire unemployment problem simply to lack of work ethic is a huge oversimplification. theres a lot of people who lost their careers and were very well qualified, and they didn't just suddenly decide to stop working in favor of the lucrative life of welfare, food stamps and minimum wage.

But have you found one? There are a ton of people applying for jobs, but some people who go to college and get their degree don't get jobs soon even if they have a useful degree. Some people are lazy, others unlucky.

I feel like it's because our generation as a whole complains because growing up we were bascally taught by our parents manual labor is degrading and a college degree promises a job. So people feel cheated by the system and take their frustration out by complaining about the job market.

Most polls/statistics are bullshit. People are selective with there applications, if they want to work then they can get work. Digging ditches, construction, Fences.. Do you have any clue how many fucking fences I have built? (dumb question). There is always work, but its not "good enough" so they would rather the Government send them a check every 2 weeks while they sit around and do nothing. AND if you shit out more children then you get more money from da welfares, then you train your kids to get free money. Life becomes sitting around waiting for the check, free money that isn’t free. Its not that we have to many people in this country, its just that they are not willing to work there way.

Our society as it is is not sustainable, this system will end in my lifetime.

I graduated saturday, i would be in a groomer right now but since its not snowin here in Ca im wokring in my wood shop. I have not landed a job no , but im sure it wont be long with my qualifications. I went to the only operater engineer program in the state and I am in demand. My buddy graduated 2 weeks ago and is makin $37 bucks an hour. I'm excited.

This actually isn't really what #occupy was about, or at least supposed to be about. There definitely were some people there like your thinking about. But *most* of the people at occupy were protesting the way the wall street executives who caused the financial crises have been let off the hook, and the growing income gap in American society. But this isn't really the time or place.

OP, I agree with a lot of what your saying and more power to ya for going out and making it happen. But you shouldn't make blanket statements like this. My father was laid off from his job, started his own company which was successful for 2-3 years but he just didn't have the time to really make it happen. Then he was unemployed and looking for work for about 2 years before he decided to follow his dream of being a writer. He has a college education and a great resume, but nobody was hiring. I think you make a valid point about some (possibly a lot) of people, especially young people. But everybody is in a different situation and I would shy away from making blanket statements about entire generations of people.

hmmm, your wrong, the entry level job market is super flooded right now and making it tough for grads to get jobs. There are however a shit ton of opportunities for people with experience. At least that is what I see in engineering job searches, and by now I am pretty much an expert

I agree, super flooded with the same thing. I dont engineer on paper,I engineer with material .I operate equipment and create a tangible product. My market is not flooded. If you wanted to work you could do what i did and get out of it and make more money than me with that degree you have. How many operaters actually have an engineering degree? Shit you would go straight to the top. But fighting the same size fish for those few pellets is gonna get you nothing, adapt.

not entirely true. my dad works in equity investing and in their hr department they put a strong focus on individuals coming from liberal arts backgrounds over undergrad business degrees. putting it bluntly, this means that his company prefers to hire history majors over commerce majors. while I myself am pursuing sciences for my undergrad, albeit at a liberal arts school, it is naive to discount liberal arts majors. going to trade school, or specified sciences such as pre-med and engineering are great career choices, but lock you into a specific path early on. for the liberal arts major, the field is wide open. many of the most successful people today came from liberal arts backgrounds, and it takes an incredible amount of work to achieve these degrees at the more venerated of these institutions. a history or english major comes out of school with an incredible knowledge of the world, how it functions, and how people within it relate to each other. not to shame science majors, but barring a naturally inquisitive mind, four (or more) years of equations and graphing does not shed much light on the world outside of your chosen area of study, nor does it provide the life experience necessary to effectively lead companies, it merely provides you with the framework to operate highly effectively behind the scenes.

I agree with your final statement. And I agree that there are, and always will be people who are lazy fucks that exploit the system. I just don't think that the "lack of jobs" issue is a fabrication of a society too lazy to take jobs... it's a very real problem for most that have been job hunting in the past 3+ years~

Look up the number of teaching jobs available compared to the number of certified teachers. You'll see a different story. You have a degree for a job that's in demand, not all jobs are in demand. I wouldn't base the unemployment rate being as high as it currently is solely on the laziness of people in this country. If the unemployment rate dropped back down to about 4%, IMO your argument would be more valid.

while I agree with some of that, I would disagree that engineers are "locked in", at least not all. many engineering fields are extremely wide spanning and companies like the way that engineers think and problem solve, and therefore are not hesitant to put them into positions that sometimes have nothing to do with their degree. Just for an example, I know a girl that graduated with a biomed engineering degree and her first job was with nestle, doing specialized marketing and management. She wasnt qualified for that job at all, but they knew she could problem solve and get shit done so they hired her

Unfortunately anyone can become a teacher, and there are 2 types when there should be 1. Let me clarify, Teacher number 1 wants to be a teacher to better the students, mold lives and shape behaviors so that he/she can better the world one person at a time. Teacher number 2 is a teacher for the benefits, the summer vacations and the never ending high school experience. High school teachers are a fucking joke for the most part. The reason there are too many people jockeying to be teacher number 2 which fucking sucks because all the #1’s are sitting on there thumbs. Teachers should make 100k a year but have to keep up, study all summer and work a 12 month year. Imagine how many of those fucks would leave if there was no summer vacation for them. My kids are going to a well researched private school. wow, I have become pretentious ha-ha !

I'm an english lit major and music minor, I work hard to do what I do because I like doing it and I don't give a fuuuuck. I have repeatedly proven to myself that I can pay myself by doing what I like, I have been a ski coach, an instructor, I have had opportunities to teach piano and music, and I will keep pursuing the things that I want to do.

Just because you have a degree that will give you a job with a nice salary for a while doesn't make you any better than an english major, I started school in a science program, I survived the first year, I could have finished my degree in science but I felt I was learning to be a calculator, not an educated person. Maybe financial security is the only thing that concerns you, and thats fair, but what a fucking waste of an education.

And if I ever want that degree of financial security, I'll take out a student loan and put myself through law school. Which could very well be as soon as I finish my BA.

You do not fall into the catagory, You are willing to go the extra step to get what you need and want and not sit and wait for it to come to you. We need more people like you. It's because everyone and their grandmother who graduates with their fancy bachelor degree in whatever feels like their diploma means that thousands of employers should be knocking on their doors asking them to work for them for a 6 figure salary, and not the other way around.

I definitely agree with the OP (sorry didn't read your following posts in the thread as I'm falling asleep at the moment).
I just wanted to say that I have had no problem getting a job ever. I work my ass off at some shitty jobs, that really anyone could do, it's just that they don't want to. "ohhh I don't want to work at McDonalds, I'll stay on unemployment".

Everyone is so lazy, it's ridiculous. This past year, I've been cleaning post offices and vend food in the summer. They may not sound terrible, and they're really not TERRIBLE, but anyone could do them, and there is plenty of labor type job opportunities out there. So what, you're cleaning toilets all day, it pays the bills and I'd do whatever it takes to make sure I can do that. Is it that hard for everyone else?

I like to call this generation the "trophy" generation. I call it the trophy generation because kids think they deserve some sort of congratulations for every task they do. For example, in sports, the entire team will often be awarded trophies even if they didn't win anything. Kids are being brought up to think they deserve a gold star even if they have not accomplished much. I've noticed at my job that other interns are often seeking congratulations for doing the most simple tasks. We expect everything to be served on a golden platter, and when we have to do it ourselves every once in a while, we expect a grand gesture of appreciation.

A big problem is for college grads there is a lack of entry level positions. There are so many experienced people without jobs that are willing to take pay cuts to fill these lower level jobs. There are plenty of jobs out there but not tons that pay the bills.

I agree completely.

People also dont want to put in the work to make it through the ranks and climb to the top. They believe that as soon as they graduate, they expectation is for them to be bank president or VP. I had this discussion with a Bank President in the local community, and says that half of them quit when they realize this isnt achievable in under a year.

Regardless of how you do, your going to be rewarded. Look at games such as COD. You get killed a certain number of times, your 'rewarded' with a perk of sorts. You get 16th place in a swimming match(?) and you still get that ribbon.

Why is my english degree a waste? I'm doing pretty solid right now and not complaining. Though all degrees are, are pieces of paper with some guys signature that proves you read a couple more books than some other person.

College in my opinion is not worth it, because majority of the time you still start out as low man on the totem pole and work your way up (which there is nothing wrong with that, thats how it should work in a job) its just why waste 4 years and 60k when you could have done that right out of high school.

I went to college and got those exact majors in English and art you are trashing (paying for those degrees on my own), and I'm working as a designer for a successful clothing brand and happily living in a city on my own.. Not only was I able to pursue something that I saw as intellectually enriching, but I came out of it doing EXACTLY what I want.

sooo yea, it's not a waste of time at all, each person can do what they want with what they have.. it seems super out of line to make a statement to the contrary simply because you went to a trade school and are looking at the job market.

Trades are the way to go these days, people are always gonna need plumbers, electricians etc. I'm working on getting my meat cutter journeymans certificate, once I finish that I could basically walk into any grocery store and get a job making 18+/hour. Not bad for a 19 year old kid

I do have a job, i am my own boss. I can build anything and i do it for clients all the time.Ceuurently i am apllying for even better jobs but to get the resume i have took allot of work. I am calling those who are sitting around waiting for there unemplyment checks lazy, those who say i cant get a job lazy.

  Dont start crying because i said your degree is kinda worthless. For you it is not, you are lucky. What about the tons of shitheads that graduate evey year with the same shit as the previous shitheads who still dont have a job. Its like making a hundred thousand burritos for only 200 fucks who will eat them , and the burritos choose to make themselves and complain theat they are not being eaten.

You are an idiot. You obviously didnt take a macroecon class in trade school, correct? If you had you might know between 4 and 6 % of the labor force constitutes full emlpoyement, those are the people that are too "lazy" ( actually structurally and frictionally unemployed workers) essentially just between jobs.
     It is a simple fact of supply and demand that there is not a sufficient supply of open positions for the 8.5% of people who are actively looking for a job ( as the term unemployment directly states). If you can find show me some evidence that there are jobs enough for 7 million workers to join the work force and still have room for the structurally and frictinally unemployed workers to go from job to job as they have always done then mabye ill think about calling 13 million people lazy.


It may seem to be shaping up rather nicely for you in your job search, but you are, just guessing, a Caucasian male from a middle class or above family.
In summary 13.1 million people in the us alone are actively looking for jobs. That kind seem like maybe there aren't enough jobs....

obviously a lot of history majors are well aware that they wont find jobs afterwards.

they do it for personal fulfilment.

i am in the middle of a masters program right now and feel like that is not enough from a mental standpoint and i am definitely checking out whether or not to make a PhD.

i am in economics though, but i can understand if someone studies history or other seemingly senseless studies just for themselves. its wrong though to blindly cry about the job situation afterwards.

job life isnt really mentally challenging (in most cases and especially before you reach higher positions). even management is more about mental work and organization then about the abstract and scientific quality of that work.

theres nothing wrong with doing undergrad in something that honestly won't really help you outside of college besides having a bachelors. if you go for this definatly want to go for the mba or whatever graduate program. Certain jobs wont look at your just because of your degree
