Ns Computer Science Nerds?

Hey guys.  The threads on WEP cracking and "The Deep Web"  got me thinking.  How many of you guys are either computer science majors or simply just really interested in computers and all how they work?

If you are post what languages and what specific areas of computing you are most interested in.

I'll start.  I'm a computer science information systems major at UVM with one semester left.  I know perl, java, php, html, javascript, css, and some bash scripting.  I'm particularly interested in server management and web security.

How bout you?

I'd like to learn a programming language, but where do i start?

I've always been pretty good with computers, I just havent really ever taken a class.

what language would you want to learn?

HTML, javascript, and CSS and languages used to make webpages(They lead into each other). 

Those are probably best for a beginner and the easiest to first start to use.

http://w3schools.com/  is a great site to learn them and many more!

If you're looking for a more traditional language to automate simple tasks and or write some cool little programs or even eventually write some games I would suggest python.

Print it out, read it front to back. Its an amazing intro to programming.

But yeah, I'm in computer science. I know a bit of html, and python, but am most proficient in java.

I wouldn't consider myself a nerd, a little harsh right?

But yeah I can write simple programs and games and I have taken 1 computer science class but learned everything else by myself

I konw perl, javascript, css, html, and btw, it's BATCH scripting, unless bash scripting is something i've never learned about..

but i are interested in programming and web security

Yeah I used to be most proficcient at Java as well until I learned perl working for IBM this past summer.  Reg exs for the win!

nah its bash scripting.  bash is the unix terminal(for the most part).  You were sorta right though batch scripting is just for windows systems.

I took a class on it either my freshman or sophomore year.  VB is pretty pathetic.  So easy to use.  Drag and drop really.  Might be useful if you want make some pretty gui for a simple program though....

I'm in Computer Security and Investigations. I know C# and Perl with some Javascript, HTML, and Bash thrown in. Right now I'm going to be taking a digital forensics course and a pentesting course, among other things.

I had a programming class last semester and we used a program called Processing. I'm pretty sure our teacher said it uses a subset of java. There are a bunch of tutorials on their site and there are a bunch of example sketches if you rather learn by example or just want to see how a particular class should be written. It's a really good learning tool because you can use it to do the really basic stuff all the way to super complex stuff. You can even get into robotics with an arduino chip and a little knowledge about circuits. There's no interface though so all the drawing and animation has to be programmed directly. I went in knowing pretty much nothing about programming besides html, css and a tiny bit of php and made this pretty awesome little game from scratch

wow I am super jealous of that curriculum.  Right up my alley.  Everything I know about network security and pen-testing are from my own research.  Hard to get good without classes like that.
