Just realized this. A season pass is 1g + gear is 1g+. Add in getting to the mountain all that shit your easily spending around 1.5g per season bare minimum, it can easily be a couple grand. I make 9.50/hr and work part time, I shouldn't be skiing.

not really.

You can go to cheaper places. If it's your passion you work at mountains or save up money on your own.


I think when I was 14 and 15 my parents still bought me a youth gore pass which was like 290 for christmas.


Since then Ive paid all my own shit. And I'm not very fucking rich, my family who got me passes doesnt have a lot of money either it was just something that they new I enjoyed a lot and it wasnt a bad hobby.


The crew from jerzy/nyc that go up to killington, yeah they have mad loot to gape away.


Plenty of people in snowsports that aren't in amazing financial positions.

Depends on where your from, obviousely if your home mountain is a massive resort that is at least an hour's drive from any major town then ya, its going to be mostly rich people, but your average local ice cube of a hill is going to have people from all backgrounds.

It's obviously for ppl with more money unless u love it. Ns for used gear rock it for multiple years. Student season passes are usually discounted. Buy ur pass Early in the season passes and they are super affordable. Car pool to the mountain bring ur own food. I'm a full time college student and i ride every weekend basically from nov through early April. Bottom line I don't need to drink or smoke or have new clothes but I do NEED to ski. If there is a will there's a way

yes i am upper middle class, but my season pass was FREE cause i work at my hill. and i dont think ive ever dropped more than 1g in a season on gear. this summer i got 2 new pairs of skis, 2 pairs of bindings and a bunch of hoodies and stuff, probably came to around $700. you just gotta find sick deals.

while it's definitely mostly upper class people who ski, there are ways to ski if you aren't wealthy. buy skis, bindings, and outerwear at the end of the season for great prices, and buy season passes early for a discount. you can find amazing deals at ski swaps too. and local mn season passes are only around $350

even with the cheapest gear, hockey and skiing take the cake. and then skiing is rough cause you gotta get a pass for the day, and find a way out to the hill (unless youre lucky and somehow have a hill 5 minutes from your house?)

certainly a lot more expensive then say, buying a soccer ball or basket ball and you're equipped to play..

;competitive hockey is really expensive though.


and back to the op, skiing is not STRICTLY for the upper middle class. im a ski instructor, and i can tell you that about half the kids I teach are there on some kind of program to get less fortunate kids into sports.

My local mountain is around 1400 for a pass, and they took away the park like 3 years ago. Its so over priced but Id rather spend the money than not ski.

i pay 70 bucks for an overly legit mountain.

but i agree with the overall message of the post.


and it always was. my mom told me that they were not skiing at the resort as children because they couldnt afford it. they would just hike up and down.

people nowadays just think they have to be able to get everything for free.

I have personally spent only 750 dollars in skiing equipment (Skis + binders + poles + jacket and pants) during my time skiing since 2002. My folks got me my first pair of skis.

Season passes have been roughly 300 dollars. Gas bills usually split between a group of 3-5 people.

It's what you need/want that decides if this is a rich man's sport or not.

i just watched like a lion a couple weeks ago. i remember because his mom told a story about how she was watching him race and he disappeared off the course, hit a side booter, then went back and finished the course. that's when they decided to put him into a freestyle program.

nah man, ski bumming still exists. There is a famous one in quebec. He owns a trailer and a propane stove. He works at the ski centers in exchange for a pass. He works the odd shop job to save up money. They are a rare breed but they are out there!

First of all, you just came to the realization that skiing is fucking expensive? You must not have been paying for much.

And second of all, thats not true. It is harder to get going skiing if you are in poverty, but if theres a hill theres a way.

Thats just sounds stupid. At that price the mountain better kick ass. Personally the lack of terrain park would be a deal breaker for me. I love all types of skiing and I'd ski powder all day if I ever saw any but thats a lot of money for one pass to ski a mountain with no park

Skiing is expensive, but ridding bikes i find is a more! If you are in to more than one type of biking you could easily spend like 7g on just decent bikes plus passes and equipment.

lol at "upper middle class." can people stop saying that? There's poor, there's middle, and there's rich. If you're throwing down G's on ski gear and passes, you're in the upper class. Not the upper middle, you are all the way up my friend. It doesn't matter if there are other rich people who can buy private jets that you can't afford. On the scale of human wealth, you are still a rich upperclassman. It's nothing to be ashamed of. You or your parents have earned that wealth in some way or another (assuming theyre not professional thieves). It's just so silly. The only people i've ever heard say "upper middle class" are rich people. Is there some guy outside of Milwaukee that has somehow stumbled his way between upper and middle and just said fuck it and stayed that way? Probably, but you are not him.

if it's something that you enjoy, its probably worth it.... there are tons of people who just take whatever skis they can find, set up back yard park details, and hike to wherever the hell they can get and shred... and that's what its about...it doesn't require the best gear, and passes to any resort to be good, to enjoy the sport

most of you guys are so removed from reality- do you know what the median salery of a family of 4 id in the us. to take a family of 4 skiing after rental, passes, food, transportation youre around 400$ if not well over. the majority of americans cant afford to do that even once. most of you kids think even 500$ for a year of skiing isnt to much thats because youre rent, food, bills, etc. are all payed for. basically skiing is for people who usually arent hurting for cash,
