So I got a Kendama...

I wanted to see what all the hype was about and so i bought a kendama for $3 from suntek in china. Well, today is day 2, and I dont get it. I know the proper grips (using the pencil), I can get it in the 2 big cups each try, but thats it. Can't get it from one to the other, cant get it on the spike, i dont get it. I dont understand, why is it becoming popular? Its not like its super exciting to progress, so i dont really understand what the pull factor is that keeps people's attention. Am I missing something?

sorry for the rant, and to those who do 'dama, no hate is intended, just looking for a little insight into your hobby.

Word, i really enjoy playing with my kendama when im bored. the fact that it is a skill toy and helps my hand eye coordination is another reason why i think i enjoy it. and i find the progression with a kendama much more exciting the progression in a video game. Thats just my 2cents on it.

ok cool, i often pick it up when im bored or walk by it and give it a few flicks. i guess its another one of those things where its really not much fun til ur good?

yeah man.  It took me about three or four days to get all the basics down (cup transfers, spiking, and around the world).  After that you'll enjoy it more because you can do many different combos and try new tricks.  Just keep practicing and you'll get better.  After the basics, try the aeroplane and lighthouse.

I have been playing kendama for about 3 months now. When I first got it I was kind of bored, but then I watched some edits on YouTube and I was blown away at the many things you could do with it. So, I would recommend just watching some skilled players and look at the potential.

kendama's are cool and alll, a bunch of my lil bro's friends love them. and they're obsessed with them...same with a few kids that go to school in another town, so i decided not to get into them..they seem addicting...and....gayish.
all those weird points and sides...that's probably why the chica's like them.

haha, i brought it to school and my suitemates were like wow thats really gay. i come back from class the next day and watch them try it for hours..

Kendama isn't something your just going to be able to pick up right away and have a blast with. You have to practice practice practice and be creative with time it will come. But be sure to get the basics down. As with everything it is 100X more fun to play with others so have your friends buy one and progress together.

It is definitely really hard when you first start playing kendama, and that can discourage a lot of people from trying it again. The main thing you should know when first starting is that it will indeed be annoyingly hard at first. But once you figure the basics out the improvements just keep on coming and you become much more comfortable with the toy. But stoked you got one man!!!!! I hope you end up liking it as much as the rest of us do

I went home this past weekend and driving by my high school I saw groups and groups of kids walkin home just flickin damas. I have a couple, fun to mess around with every once in a while. def upped hand eye.

Guy in the video above went to my high school too. go figure
