Can aerials and moguls co exist with pipe and slope?

So I was out for dinner this evening, and a mogul comp was on the TV. I never really though about it before that point, but now it's on my mind. With the inclusion of slopestyle and pipe in the Olympics, are the days of mogul skiing (and aerials) numbered?
I honestly can't see mogul skiing survive the long haul. The sport has evolved, we have outgrown moguls, and when people watch slopestyle in the 2014 Olympics, the world will most likely agree.
Remember ballet skiing? It used to be an Olympic sport.

Moguls, probably not. I really can't see Aerials leaving either. I think they all will coexist together.
To be honest, I think Slope and Halfpipe will actually burn out in 20-30 years, possibly less time. I mean, it really has been a huge fad in the past few years. Yes, it's fun, but I really can't see this lasting forever, just as ballet skiing didn't.

Why? Tons of little flat resorts have found new life by turning their entire mountain into a terrain park. I just can't see this "fad" ending, and having a proliferation of riders who would rather pull out the rails and do laps on green runs.

"people can only go so fast down a hill full of bumps"
"you can only do so many flips and spins on an aerials jump"
hell, they even regulate aerials so that you literally can't progress past 3 flips (i'm pretty sure). at least freeskiing promotes progression, allows it, allows for creativity, and for new things to be seen. i don't see it dying down any quicker than aerials or moguls.

yea, but as every newschooler points out, creativity is key. and as long as little white kids want to be hood and cool they will turn to slope/freeskiing instead

Ok so skiing is currently aerials. The next big thing. Varials.... Guys are gonna be skiing with a pan full o bacon, hit a booter, pop one ski off a foot, use the tip to flip the bacon, and put that ski back on..... Ok maybe not that extreme but seriously, one day where gonna see skis coming off the boot midair and clicking them upon landing.

I think aerials might die, it's too similar to slopestlye. Moguls though, there is a strong young generation of mogul skiers. I pray that moguls will stay an olnpyis sport because it is the wport that i truly love.

They need a super comp: starting with moguls them off a canon box then into a double job feature then a double jump line and the second jump you land Into a halfpipe all while carrying a gun so you can do some biathalon then finish it off with ski ballet

I think that the disciplines should have a DEATHMATCH. WHERE FOUR SPORTS LESS POPULAR THAN SEAN WHITE GO HEAD-2-HEAD IN A WINNER GETS FIS RESTRICTIONS SLAUGHTER. KIDS SEATS ARE ONLY "$10", SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SOMEDAY!!!

Haha, I like this. The losing sports get nailed with FIS regulations requiring 10-year-old equipment and tricks. The winning sports... get the same restrictions.

I think I agree with lamptard to a certain extent. You can't imagine it leaving because it seems so big now. But, 20 years ago if you had told people about smart phones they wouldn't have believed it considering lots of people still had rotary phones. Also, in case you haven't noticed, the Olympics are more about technical sports than things that have a lot of style. Figure skating is one of the few sports that places a lot of emphasis on style judging. Any creative sport becomes less popular when it hit a plateau in tricks or venues. I agree that slope and pipe will continue to "progress", but I think the possibilities will soon plateau. A jump can only be so big before people die from making a mistake on a triple... Of course, tricks have already far exceeded anything I could have imagined when I got into freeride skiing 10 years ago.

the Olympics aren't going to be the right place for freestyle skiing. its like being a vulgar comedian and then having to give your set to a group of 70 year old Catholics. the Olympics are WAY to regimented in their rules (historically) the Moseley dinner roll(ex). it doesn't allow for free skiers to be free skiers. Also it incorporates the mainstream/hipster problem. in order for freeskiing to be in the Olympics it must become more mainstream which inherently makes it less hip. It will be good for the sport initially by injecting money but in the long run i believe it will hold the sport back creatively.

i agree that freeskiing might not be cut out for the olympics, however i think contests like the dew tour and xgames will keep it alive and the sport will continue to have a growing following and keep growing larger.

thats what i was thinking. plus how are all olympic sports main steam?? How many kids do you see talking about cross country ski racing or some other less popular sport??? Also the only way to continue the sport is to make it appeal to the youth.

Yeah, agree... funny how im watching moguls on sportsnet ontario right now. The broadcasters seem to care, they put full effort into it, every world cup stop, athlete interviews, show all the girls runs... of course the vital sponsor of canadian mogul skiing is the post office... lol dont read into that too much.

also, snowboarders at the olympics once upon a time raced through gates... boarder-cross has completely taken over.
