Why are you supposed to shovel the stairs?

I'm pretty new to urban, I don't do it much due to lack of spots in my small town. I've heard the rule where your supposed to shovel your stairs and I'm just wondering why your supposed to?

where snowboarding is today, in my opinion, is a lot more of a mature sport then freestyle skiing is. keep in mind this is just my opinion, but snowboarding's priorities at the moment are a lot more genuine and in some ways more "down to earth" and in touch with the community. Look at riders like LNP who were invited to x games but turned it down because it didn't seem fun. Also check out edits and movies by video grass, keep the change, change that tape, FODT, etc.
of course snowboarding still has its downsides but i can tell you right now snowboarders would never have to ask each other why shovel the stairs or why bother if your not filming.
