Watermarking the centre of a photo

I mean come on... like if you're uploading a photo to the internet, you're not going to sell it anyways. No magazine would EVER buy something that has been on the net already.

Put it in a reasonable location that doesn't ruin the photo, then as people appreciate your photo they will also appreciate you as an artistic photographer.

Right?

Or am I way off base?

you are very right. Nothing annoys me more than when someone puts a giant watermark in the middle of a mediocre picture.

If you upload it to the internet, just dont load it any larger than 1000 PX and it's useless anyways.

Depends on the context. I've had moms make 18x24 prints from web sized files, cropping my name out of the corner. Is that one picture a big deal? No. But would I have liked the 40 bucks from the print? Of course...

In reality, it's probably unreasonable to try to fight it because theft will happen no matter what; however it's the photographer's choice if they feel it's necessary

The problem with making them to small is that its easy as this to take it out. Im no photoshop expert and this took me 30 seconds. I mean, of course no one is going to "steal" a photo in the skiing community but its super easy to do it in the "celebrity world".

But you're right, putting a huge trademark just takes away from the photo. Even some little ones that aren't placed properly take away from the photo

So there's kinda a long story behind this guy but he's basically this huge gaper, wannabe photographer, idiot, retard fuck who comes to my home mountain all the time and takes the worst pictures ever and boosts saturation and contrast all the way up. Then he uploads them to facebook and EVERY thing he types is in caps. If you want a good laugh add him, it never gets old.

Nice small watermark in the bottom of the photo is cool, just to point people to your site or to give you cred etc...

I always watermark my website photos with my logo, but keep it off to one corner. By doing this, it makes it so removal is difficult usually, and might mean sacrificing the composition if you were to crop it out.

I only upload my photos at low res anyways so I'm really not worried about them being stolen. I simply want them to be watermarked so if it ends up somewhere and someone sees it and likes it, they'll know who it was that took it, where to find me, etc.

I'm not well versed in the logistics of web photos so bear with me, but wouldn't it be just as effective to make the photos super low resolution? As in, large enough to get a preview, but too small to print or use for anything...

I agree though, watermarks that draw the eye are bad form and I usually have a hard time taking someone seriously if they do this.

It's been said but to reiterate.

If you are posting a photo on NS and you watermark it in the center;

GET OVER YOURSELF! If that photo was good enough to be center basically ruin-marked it wouldn't be on here because it would be submitted to a magazine.

I dont understand? Who is this guy? Why does he have a private jet? Why is he so terrible at taking photos? It astonishes me how terrible his photos are, their is the ocasional photo thats mediocre but besides that they suck.
