How Will Tanner Fair....

I just read the article Tanner had with tator about his comeback from micro-fracture surgery and his current training outlook for the year and I'm just wondering how everything thinks he is going to fair with all of the new up and comers riding Pipe like its never been riden before.

He stated that he'll be underground training Pipe for the next year and compete in the New Zealand Open a year from now and "drop a bomb on the world." Yes, I know Tanner is probably the most epic Pipe skier of all time, but times have changed since he's been in the ring.  Kevin Rowland, Bertoni, Torin-Wallace...I mean to name a few of these young bucks who aren't the slightest bit intimidated by Tanner. Yeah the guy's gonna work his but off, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesnt't even qualify for the 2014 Olympic team. Personally, there are just too many guys in this sport now that are working just as hard as him and only focusing on Pipe (just like him) that have age on their side.

I don't see Tanner making waves in the future like he thinks, and if he does he's going to have to go with through Kevin Rolland to hold that crown again....which is a pretty steep feat considering how solid Kev is riding these days. Anyone else have any thoughts on Tanner's comeback to Pipe and how he might hold up with the new generation of Pipe skiers?

Yeah but you have to remember that a lot of bonus comes with age. Things like experience, patience, strategy, willpoer... all things that can be under developed in the mind of a young skier. Getting old isn't a death sentence - sure your body needs a bit more maintenance than when you were younger, but your mind is so far advanced beyond anything you can imagine as a kid. The young guys haven't gotten hurt yet either... its a long time until the Olympics and you can see these days skiers are dropping like flies. Tanner will be smart and mature in his career and focus on nothing but the Olympics. He has that luxury, whereas the younger guys will be pushed to win, win, win and try crazier and crazier stuff.

So don't just bet on the youth card. Yes its true that Tanner needs to stay healthy, and he is coming back from a bad injury at an older age... but his mental prowess will be unlike anyone else. His career is at a perfect time to simply focus with a one-track mind... And if anyone could beat this thing with their mind alone it would be Tanner.

Do you think Tanner can have enough doubles on lock in time for the Olympics? By 2014, I imagine you'll need dubs both ways (real dubs, not barrel rolls with a hamstring grab) and a switch dub. He's got his work cut out for him, but you're right--he's got the resources and the wisdom and drive to make it possible. I'd say his odds at a podium are 25%, which still makes him superhuman, considering his setback.

Shaun White does make snowboarders look bad, and its not with his mouth that he does it. Tanner Hall won't run his mouth on a national news outlet and if he does, I won't care. Everyone is too worried about 'omg do I look good in this outfit?' or 'omg this is our shot at the olympics, we need to act nicely so everyone will like us'. I'd be more proud to watch Tanner run his mouth on national tv about the sport he loves and grew, the sport that seems to have morphed into a bunch of pansies too worried about their image.

Much like everyone on this site (I'd imagine) I have always admired what Tanner Hall has done for this sport, and can do when on ski's and healthy.

Few skiers have had as much influence in newschool skiing as him; he set the standard for all other pros by producing amazing segments for 5+ years. Add to that his work in production, Oakley, Armada, etc, X Games medals, interviews, mainstream attention, etc etc and its easy to say Tanner Hall is the most influential modern skier.

However, while I have admired Tanner Hall I'm not sure I've always respected him. Now I've never met him....so I'm saying this in a superficial manner, but his conduct and attitude as judged for afar wasn't the greatest.

Got to say that's clearly changing, and I hope to see him representing the USA at the Olympics. His motivation is inspiring, and his commitment to the sport even more so.

Good luck Tanner - make the dream come true brother!

All things considered if you look at the scope of things that Tanner has learned in his career, I don't think that adding a few doubles switch and regular is really that big of a deal. I mean its all just practise and air sense... Tanner has lots of both of those.

Skiers are starting to find the physical limits of the sport. Notice how many injuries have been happening? There isn't too much further we can go technically and then everyone will have to focus on style. I would absolutely not put it past Tanner for one microsecond that he could learn, master and add Style to whatever tricks are necessary over the next three years.

My prediction on this is that if Tanner can remain injury-free - because lets face it that last one was really bad - he's got an excellent shot at making massive waves in the Olympics. I'd be more surprised if he didn't podium than if he did.

Yeah. If the halfpipe side of the sport stagnates as I believe it will (three dubs, switch hit, switch landing = win) I see no problem with Hall getting those dialed.

If for some reason a very great style change happens and Duncan Adamses start being rewarded with podiums, then I think it will be a different ball game for Hall, as his latest pipe years haven't been that... stylish. Effortless, poignant, yes, but not very stylish. IMHO.

I don't think that age is going to be a factor. The reason most competitors currently are < 25 year old is because that's the age of the first group of kids to grew up with legit parks. There's nothing physical stopping 30 year olds from competing.

After watching Tanners latest movie I'm actually really really disappointed that he wants to focus on pipe. I'd rather watch him charging big mountain lines...

if you look at my previous post i was asking if he had ever dubbed. i wasnt sure. i was more referring to a dub cork, but i didnt know he had dub flipped either. and ive been freestyle skiing for four years, im not a new kid getting into it. pull the dick out of your ass.

I couldn't agree more with the wiser mental state and getting his body in shape as a pro athlete should in the gym and in the field. I am sure his gym work (which probably trumps anyone) else will pay off.

Also, this is what Tanner has been working on for his entire professional career and it is his one and only shot to win be in the olympics. Back in 2002-2003ish or so after Tanner lost x pipe two consecutive years everyone said he wasn't a pipe skier. I am sure people saying he can't make the olympics just fuels him even more.

IF he manages to stay injury free for the next two years, I would be shocked if he does not qualify.

I agree with what you're saying but I'm sure you'd be there first to admit that in the 2 years Tanner has been absent, the sport has progressed exponentially. Yes there is always a risk of getting hurt, yes Tanner is extremely driven, and yes he will absolutely learn the tricks needed to atleast "compete" again.

But I bet Kevin Rolland and the younger crew is drooling at the opportunity to face the legend and I bet the possibility of competing against him is driving them that much harder to stay on top of their game. I stand by my initial thought....Tanner will have a tough time making the podium for this 2014 Olympics.

Yes, the mind is an amazing part of the body, but like every sport...its the top athletes that have the hardest time admitting that their time has past. Tanner was the first young gun skier to come out of the box and change the world....which also will make him one of the first to have to surrender to age and injury. Its how life goes.

Peyton Manning is seeing this now at the age of 35, Kobe is seeing it with the amount of miles he has on his legs....their minds don't want to give in to their body. But at some point....it just happens.

there is a video of him attempting a dub 12 mute in retallack for the movie which was last season. cant remember if there is one in the actual movie though.

As said above Tanner is super goal oriented. With the Olympics as a goal I don't doubt that he'll make the team. My dream podium would be Candide, THall, and Dorey in that order. Yea I also think Candide will at least try and qualify, but there are some crazy french pipe skiers now. Just depends on whether he decides to film again or go back to comps. Olympics are tempting but Candide usually likes to chill.

You are a fucking idiot, as I am getting older (and I'm 15) I'm realizing that how far hard work and motivation and setting your mind to a goal and Gavin perseverance gets you, it gets you farther than natural skill and talent. As TJ Schiller says injuries helped me with skiin becuz it put it back in perspective and made me want it and train that much more. THALL will be doing big things. And to the other guy about being disappointed on him just skiing pipe, big mountain skiin I sick but it will not help as much as skiing pipe in the olyimpics o put skiing on the map.... Sorry not paragraphing I'm on mobile

if anyone can do it, its tanner. look at his past: he broke both his ankles at chads, which should have been career ending, and came back and was at the top of the sport again. i think he can do it again. he has more drive and motivation, combinded with pure skill, than any one else in the game.

anyone says that tanner is to old just look at tommy ellingson. He shreds everyday at meadows and I see him there every time. He throws dub 12s. 180 hop to sw dub 10. double flats and backs for days. Tommy isnt old but for freeskiing he is old and he throws down so hard every single day.

I believe tanner will make it he is one of the most dedicated skiers I have ever seen. Just watch like a lion

I can't believe tanner still has his doubters after all these years. He's basically recovered from 2 separate career ending injuries and continues to push it in various disciplines of skiing. i think he wants it badly enough that if injuries don't plague him over the next few years, we should expect to see a podium finish from tanner. he also has jah on his side, and you just don't fuck with jah.

I would be so incredibly stoked if tanner could come back and win gold at the olympics. I am a canadian, so obviously rooting for the the canadian team. If I watched T-Hall win though that would be pretty fucking legendary.

All it takes is one jump hit a little too fast or a little too slow and then thats the season. People do get hurt all the time. While so people have age on tanner, age won't help with shit when you got a broken leg right before xgames.

But, you're forgetting one small detail, after the Olympics are over Tanner's going to be shredding around stoned as fuck.

Stoked to watch the next few seasons of pipe and slope competitions leading up to the Olympics!

1) Thall was one of the first people to throw (newschool) dubs. he was throwing Kangs up at Whistler the summer after the JOI where a few pros learned how to dub(proly 3-4 pros could at the time). And tanner learned on the sketchy glacier jumps, not on the uber safe/perfect JOI jump. this was 2007 i believe.
His air awarness, and ability to learn tricks is on par with anyone out there.

2) tanners pipe runs were both more technical and more stylish than the competition. he threw shifties into most of his pipe hits the last two years he competed. along with flat 3's which are rediculously hard to do. tanner was the only competitor with style in the pipe game the last few years he competed.

3) Tanner will continue to shred pow as he has always done. The years he won gold in pipe, he literally would not set foot in the pipe until a week before competition, because he would spend his entire winter up at ratallack. pow is easy on the joints, but also keeps your skiing sharp.

4)Ski pros do not train. they exercise. they flat out do not train like professional athletes do in other sports(specific goals in mind to increase performance). Not the intensity, not the technicality, not the nutrition, nothing. Tanner looks like he might be one of the first to actually train, and do so in a scientific, and regimented way(the only way to make tremendous progress).

5)There are two things that could hold him back from succeding:

1. the pain from his knees/ankles- dude has the mental toughness of a brick wall. he wants this so bad that pain is easily blocked out. Dude is super mentally tough.

2. Not being able to learn the tricks in time- he has unbelievable airsense, and has been tramping nonstop, learning the feeling of the different rotations. by the time he competes again, he should have a whole new arsenal of tricks on lock.



Lastly, dont ever doubt someone who wants it more than everybody else. Im sure he has his doubts, but i personally think he can make a pretty good run at it.

to go ahead and say that he's back and ready to compete for an olympic spot and try to do well and bring some fire, tanner knows he can do it. whether his age at the time will prohibit him from winning is the biggest question, but he has the best attitude and outlook and drive of any skier, and that will be what propels him to a podium position at the olympics. i can see him doing it

also, 30 really isnt that old. look at athletes in other sports who actually train and take care of their bodies instead of partying at every event. I bet many skiers could be at their prime at around 30 if not later, provided they take care of themselves.

and while I think he's perfectly capable of winning, I think someone who's just as motivated if not more motivated, like Justin Dorey, who can also focus these next 2 years on exclusive pipe skiing just to win the gold, and who is a bit younger and hasn't been plagued with injuries and has an arguably much greater basket of tricks will have a much greater chance at winning. I mean, the amount of progression in pipe skiing in the last 2 years is already ridiculous enough and the 2 years leading up to Olympics will be even more crazy no doubt. My prediction is Tanner will simply meet a physical barrier which he won't be able to cross with all the younger up and coming skiers simply because of his age and past injuries. While he'd still throw down hard and I'm sure could put a couple doubles in his run, someone like Rolland will no doubt have back to back to back to back dubs lined up. I'd still love to see him come out on top though. Oh and you really can't forget Dumont. He's going to be just as fired up as anyone to win.

This is an interesting thread. Were like the dudes post nfl game breaking down the future. Its like people don't remember degenerates and team 13. Skiing goiing full circle and is now as disciplined as the roots from where it free it self from 15 years ago. I agree the kids should be given every opportunity within the world so why not walk around a track wearing a funny suit. I know i dream of making it to an old age skiing powder injury free. Mind over Matter? Or will it be Matter Vs. the Mind? Its a rough life. Skiing is really only fun when your having fun right? Will Greed or true Words prevail in the hunt for the ring. MY PRECIOUS!!!
On another note remember that chick who fell doing the air in boarder cross and lost the gold.... HAHA

but in all seriousness, if he can remain healthy and stay hungry, he could easily podium two years from now. look at almost all professional sports, players are in their prime in the late 20's to early 30's. shit is not out of the question in skiing.

All this is going to do is fire tanner up even more. If anyone can he can. The determination and will power he poses is so strong he will do it for himself CR and for the sake of his life and the one thing that matters most to him. Never have i seen anyone, heard of anyone, any athlete be more passionate and want something more than tanner. He will come so far 2 years for him is a scary thought if all focused on pipe, hell, i could feel his energy from watching like a lion

Both of these statements are EXTREMELY false. Any year Tanner wants to win Pipe all he does is train Pipe until he reaches that competition.

Secondly, for you to think skiers on "excersise" and don't train is completely rediculous. Haven't you seen Sammy's video of him training? In today's day and age every single skier looking to podium trains their ass off. They don't just "excerise."

he'll be 18 or 19 by 2014 so by then he'll be slaying unbelievably hard
