How Will Tanner Fair....

I just read the article Tanner had with tator about his comeback from micro-fracture surgery and his current training outlook for the year and I'm just wondering how everything thinks he is going to fair with all of the new up and comers riding Pipe like its never been riden before.

He stated that he'll be underground training Pipe for the next year and compete in the New Zealand Open a year from now and "drop a bomb on the world." Yes, I know Tanner is probably the most epic Pipe skier of all time, but times have changed since he's been in the ring.  Kevin Rowland, Bertoni, Torin-Wallace...I mean to name a few of these young bucks who aren't the slightest bit intimidated by Tanner. Yeah the guy's gonna work his but off, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesnt't even qualify for the 2014 Olympic team. Personally, there are just too many guys in this sport now that are working just as hard as him and only focusing on Pipe (just like him) that have age on their side.

I don't see Tanner making waves in the future like he thinks, and if he does he's going to have to go with through Kevin Rolland to hold that crown again....which is a pretty steep feat considering how solid Kev is riding these days. Anyone else have any thoughts on Tanner's comeback to Pipe and how he might hold up with the new generation of Pipe skiers?

Your comments make a lot of sense for a reasonable person but Tanner is completely different then the average person, his determination and work ethic combined with pure natural ability is ridiculous. I would put large amounts of money (if I had them) on Tanner being in the olympics and being a legitimate medal contender.

Tanner is one of those few athletes who have cemented the whole "mind over matter" thing into our heads. It's not impossible.

yea we'll see, but tanner has some next level air awareness on water ramps and trampolines, and his actual skiing ability is world class as well. if he wants it, i think he could get it.

Tanner is 28 now, he'll be 30 when the Olympics roll around. To put things into perspective Tom Wallisch was the 2nd OLDEST rider in this years first stop at the Dew Tour for slopestyle and he's 24 (still super young for a normal person). For a sport to consider 24 years old an elder, it just shows how quickly things are changing. Kids are learning things faster, training harder as state of the art facilities, and chomping at the bit to have a run at the world's best.

Yes, Tanner did kill it a couple years back in the Pipe, but that was a couple years ago! Compare Rolland's run this past month with the winning run in the X Games a few years ago and that gold medal run may not have even granted you a spot in the finals! I love Tanner as much as anyone and am grateful for what he's done for the sport. But I think this time when he drops in to the Pipe with these young guns he's gonna be in for a rude awakening. "Mind over Matter" can only last for so long, especially with all the surgeries and miles Tanner has on his legs now.

I'm super stoked to see how he fares*, I just don't see it working to his favor.

That literally doesn't make any sense. And he has no form of citizenship for Jamaica whatsoever. He's American, you don't get to choose what team to ride for in the Olympics.

He will be in the olympics and he will probably get top 3, just saying. Tanner has some insane motivation, ive heard some crazy stories about how pumped he is and how hard he works every day just to get stronger and to get better at skiing. He's a crazy dude and he has one goal and that is to win it all and he wont give up until he does.

tanner hall is the skiing equivalent to rocky balboa. sure, his interviews aren't the best, but the guy has a dream and he'll punchdance through montage after montage to achieve it. will apollo creed or that crazy russian guy prevail? we'll have to watch to find out.

I am personally stoked for him. I hope he makes top 3. Every interview I hear from him or video I watch I always get a smile. He is doing what he TRULY loves which is way more than what most people can say. Id hate to say it but only a handfuld of NSers will be turning 30 and making the olympics....scratch that part of NSers and put planet earth.

Peoples said samething about Dumont and look now he's definitly in the top 10 pipe skiers. If Tanner stays away from injuries he'll probably do the same.

i dont think anyone else is biking 40 miles a day, doing 3 hr warmup exercises with an olympic caliber trainer, and then spending hours on a trampoline...

even kids on the us freeskiing program are nowhere near tanner in their work ethic and regiment

it has nothing to do with age, nor the tricks kevin rolland can do, none of that shit matters. if you want something bad enough you will have it. I personally have never seen somebody want something more, and be so confident about achieving his goals. most guys are like " yea i'm training hard to go to the olympics n stuff" Tanner is fucking already there in his head and he is like "i am going to the fucking olympics and i'm gonna win" he doesnt even mention his age or that his knees are fucked 10x more than anyone elses. and that attitude and visualization is what makes him the best competitor in our sport period.

Bullshit. Even people caught doping usually have a certain required downtime, usually two years, then they're good to go.

Tanner hasn't been "caught" on anything competition-wise.

wat...? i assume you are referring to tanners past successes in the x games which i'm aware of. i'm asking a simple question. if you want to be successful in pipe you can either a. throw as many dubs as possible or b. be duncan adams, and i dont think tanner plans on taking the duncan adams route.
