WTB: Nikon 8mm - 10.5mm Lens

I have a D3100 and im looking for a wide angle for some filming

Lemme know if you have anything between 8mm an 10.5mm

Get the Bower 8mm fish. Since you're filming full manual won't be a problem and it will be cheaper and higher quality than the Nikon 10.5mm fish.

Assuming you want a fish eye (8-10mm), if you want to save money, get this: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2011/11/25/samyang8nikon

(make sure to get the new CPU version)

It comes rebranded in the USA because of a trademark dispute with Samsung; you can find it as Opteka, Rokinon, Bower, etc...

For video and stopped down this lens is sharp enough. Otherwise the Nikon 10.5mm is a far better choice.

Please do some research before you try to argue. Check what people are saying here.


It generally regarded as equal or better than the Nikon. People are selling their Nikon's to get the Bower.


"The IQ is as good as with my best other fisheyes and tops them all at f/3.5 especially near the edges of the image circle, thanks to the specific "very low" radial compression in this area coupled with "sharp" vignetting. Take note that the image circle diameter is exactly the same as from a shaved Nikkor 10.5 mm. The Samyang has however 2 mm and 20° of focal length and FOV respectively less than the Nikon lens!" Have you ever tried the Samyang (Bower/Rokinon/etc..)? It is soft as fuck at big apertures.

And what would be the advantage of shooting wide open with a fish? You don't get shallow DOF. The Bower is adequately sharp stopped down. There is no reason to EVER shoot wide open with a fish and expect the same image quality as you'd get stopped down.

Indoor, at parties, at night, etc... I have had many situations where I wish the Samyang weren't so useless at anything below f/8.
