So today was the first day my mountain opened for the year, yes January 3 was our opening day. In the Southeast weather has been more miserable than ever but everyone just copes and does their own thing while shredding blower ice or "Loose Granular." Started the day with my first season on park crew, bright and early putting in rails and carrying rakes up hill hard while working to open the park for the rest of the year. Our mountain had every gun on full blast and my goggles were frosted beyond repair in the 15 degree weather, I was soaked and they were blowing snow in the park so we had to constantly re-groom...
But I had the opportunity to be out there with the cats as they were grooming the runs (funny how a snow cat zooming right past you can make you feel so special), I was able to take first chair, all the kids who have been miserable waiting on snow toughened out the blowers and shredded all day, and got to work with some close friends and have good times in the park. then as I was leaving I was noticing all the tourists munchin away on pizza not giving two fucks about the conditions, just as happy as can be that they were able to ski today.
And for that I am sitting here in my living room, drinking a beer, about to watch football, to sore to move, and havent stopped smiling since I took my first step on snow this morning. I honestly feel like a little kid that skied for the first time today, and i embraced every minute of it
