Squaw Valley is having their worst winter possibly ever. With a near zero inch base and only sun/warmth in the 14 day forecast, SF Times reports they might file for natural disaster insurance relief.

Utah:

January 3, 2012 = 92.0" YTD / ?
January 3, 2011 = 264.5 YTD  / 723.5 Season Total =  36.5%
January 3, 2010 = 147.0 YTD / 585.5 Season Total = 25%
January 3, 2009 = 205.0 YTD / 696.0 Season Total = 29.4%
January 3, 2008 = 221.5 YTD / 701.5 Season Total = 31.5%
January 3, 2007 = 141.5 YTD / 401.5 Season Total = 35%
January 3, 2006 = 239.5 YTD / 637.5 Season Total = 37.5%
January 3, 2005 = 283.0 YTD / 697.5 Season Total = 40.5%

That means at this time year over year we usually have 33% of our total annual snowfall already.  Right now we have 92".  That means that if those trends stay true we will end this season with 278" ... Pretty dismal. 

This season to me however reminds me ALOT of the 2006/2007 Season. 

Just to compare those seasons a little bit

2011/2012

Beginning November: 24"
Mid November: 64"
Beginning December: 77"
Mid December: 86"
Beginning January: 92"


2006/2007
Beginning November: 24"
Mid November: 61"
Beginning December: 94"
Mid December: 119"
Beginning January: 141.5"

Obviously it dumped a bit in December that year.. but then it only snowed 6 times in the month of January totaling 35".  Then lights turned on in February and it snowed a bunch. 112" in February. But only 45" in March and 45" in April.  Basically that season had 2 snowy months.  December and February.  I predict we will see something similar this year.  big dump at the end of January.  Another big dump at the Beginning of March.  Not a lot of snow in February or April.  Tons at the end of January and through March.  That way we won't be stuck at 278" but will come out somewhere closer to 370" which is still dismal..but better than nothing.

we've gotten just about as much snow in denver as beaver creek/vail


honestly can say that the conditions at beaver creek were the worst i have ever seen in my 12 seasons there for end of december/early january

I was in Fernie, BC that dreadful winter. Gave up mid Feb and actually went to Ontario for the rest of the season - didn't see that one coming.

Mount Washington on Vancouver Island gave a free seasons pass for 05/06 to everyone that bought a 04/05 pass because they were open for only small percentage of the ski season. One of the cooler things I've heard of a ski hill doing for it's pass holders.
That and they open on June 21st (solstice) for a day of skiing if the snow allows it - the past few years they've had such a big base that they open up for a day of skiing when they start up their bike season.

I don't know where you got that number, but I doubt we've had that much. Plus, our biggest storm so far this year (about 2') was in the first week of october, and 90% of that snow is now melted. We had about a foot thanksgiving week, and that's all melted too. We have no natural base, and until we get that, we may as well have had nothing at all. Powder day when theres no base = skiing rocks with snow in your face.

It rained a shitload here and my hill was really really really (or it seemed like it) close to closing. Like, 1 more rainy day and some warm temps away from closing.

I know it's totally white people problems but it's been a really, really sad winter for almost everyone in the US so far.

massachusetts is having a sick season! it hasn't snowed since october! its 40 degrees every time it precipitates and 10 degrees when its dry! so sick! I have puddles in my back yard! such a sick season! thank you mother nature!

What also sucks, is that the snow in October did not last.  Mammoth got something like 2-3 feet in mid-October, but the warm weather killed it.  If that storm had come in mid-November, things would be MUCH better right now.  That snow would have at least gotten something of a base down.  Things would not be great, but we would probably be able to ski something off the top other than Cornice. 

The patten may shift in the middle of this month.  If we can have six weeks of high pressure, we can have six weeks of low presssure. 

My next to last winter as a ski bum, living in Tahoe, we had a three month dry spell.  It was different, because December rocked, so we at least had a base, which this year we don't, but there was very little snow in Jan, Feb, or March.  Then, from April 1 to May 10, Squaw got 144 inches. 

You never know, just keep hoping things change.  I feel bad for people doing their only ski bum winter this winter.
