Go to a bootfitter.

I'm sick of seeing all these threads.

pisses me off like you wouldn't believe when people say this, it's not helpful at all if you don't explain why, otherwise they'll just ignore you.

You go to a bootfitter, because that's their job, thats what they do. They can tell if you have anything different with your foot so they can fit you with a wide/narrow boot. Then if you have a big arch, they can get you inserts. They know how to get you in the most comfortable boots available. and no full tilts are not the answer

Yes I'M aware of that, and I know to go through experience, but for others who if not explained to might not want to spend the extra cash at a bootfitters, that's all I'm saying, explain don't command.

I went to a local ski shop yesterday.  I saw one walking around with full tilts (trying them on) and a parent asking about them with an employee; to top it off, the kid wasn't even with his mom to try them on.

I hate that people automatically associate getting boots properly fitted with it costing alot more money, in a lot of cases that is just not true

ok yeah but i need new boots anyway as ive grown out of mine. ive tried on some full tilt drop kicks and they were way too thin, but would a park boot help me with shinbang as ive got it really bad in the past and i ski in a standard boot. i know that it will not take it away completely but just reduce it.

nope. if you get really bad shinbang something is wrong with how your boots fit. don't buy "park boots" because they won't be any good if they don't fit your feet. Besides, just because they are "park boots" doesn't make them the cure for shinbang. I have FT dropkicks (that i was fitted for) and i will get shinbang if i land reallly backseat.

so here's what you need to do: get down to a bootfitter and have him put you in the right boots for your feet, with footbeds, etc if necessary. then buy them and ski and you will notice an amazing difference.

This.

At my shop my bootfitter is having me ski my boots first, then take notes on notes of what happends with my foot, what hurts, where it doesn't. So i can go back, and have him acutally bootfit the boot

yeah true. i also get pins and needles some times in my feet and i dont have footbeds. its just that park boots are softer and i thought that would help, seeing as my boots are pretty stiff. obviously try them on and get them properly fitted though.

alot of shops, at least around here, only sell one or two different brands of boots,..

A lot of bootfitters are BS.
Do your own research on how a boot should fit, and THEN get the "bootfitter's" advice.. Most of these "bootfitters" you speak of are not professionals. All they know is the the two finger in the shell rule...

Lots of NSers glorify bootfitters, fact is there are not many very good ones out there.

i agree and if you know what your talking about when you go in they often respect you alot more and say if theres one guy who actually knows how to do a bootfit properly, or atleast better than others, they can point you in there direction.

i actually got a discount with my boots cause the guy liked me and realised i knew what should be happening, so really we worked together. i dont even know that much, just knowledge from hours of internet research. if your going to buy something that expensive and that important you really should fully educate yourself first.

If you do a bit of shop research, you can find a good one in your area, who is at the very least helpful. Plus even the most basic ones are still doing it on a daily basis so they know their inventory and how competitors will compare to each other.

Not many people who don't spend time on a shop floor can offer much help past that.

And I think there are more good ones than you think (trust me I do know some shitty ones for sure). More and more shops are getting technical and basing their practices on cause & effect, rather than smoke and mirrors. More knowledge is getting out and I think it will only get better.

The unfortunate truth is that most shops have to hire cheap, seasonal employees to help during their busiest portion of the season.  These employees are often given only the most basic bootfitting training. To aviod these people and work with the most experienced "bootfitters" I would generally advise people to tell whoever they are talking to about boots that they generally need custom work done to boots. If the "bootfitter" looks scared shitless and has no idea what you are talking about ask for the person that has the most experience with boot modifications. Many times they will just refer you to the most experienced "bootfitter" when you tell them that you need work done, as they have no idea what the fuck to do.
