How do i run 60fps footage in FCP?

i accidentally filmed a bunch of stuff in R3 on my go pro (720p at 60fps) instead of R5, which I normally use. it won't open in FCP. what can i do to convert it and get it to open?

well you can convert it to 24p and then speed it up to play back in full time. but fcp should handle 60p just fine...

Throw it in Cinema Tools and convert it. But I'm pretty sure that footage should open in FCP regardless.

when I try and drag it (or import it) into FCP, it would say "file error: unknown type" or something. i'm using MPEG streamclip to convert them all to 30 fps in Prores 422. i think this will work.

i convert all my r3 footy from my gopro to prores 422 but keep it at 60fps and it works flawlessly.

that will work but if you have final cut pro you have cinema tools so you should use mpeg streamclip to export to prores422 still but in its original frame rate and 100% quality then open the clips with cinema tools and in the bottom right corner there will be a button that says conform, then conform it to 24 or 29.92fps and it will all be in smooth slow motion. then import them to fcp and if you don't want the clip to be in slow mo in your edit, change the speed to 250%(if at 24fps) or 200%(if at 29.97fps) to play them back real time. then if you do want a slow mo shot you are good to go and its already super smooth

no because all your doing when exporting at a different frame rate is telling it the number of frames to play back in. so basically it drops half of the frames during export so that only 24 frames per second are viewed vs the original 60. this will keep the footage in real time but won't allow you to smoothly slow it down. conforming basically stretches out the 60 frames into 24 frames per second doubling the playback time and giving the footage smooth slow motion. this is now 100% speed for your clip so if you speed it up by 250% to get the footage back to real time, you are still able to slow down back to 100% which will keep all of your footage very smooth. hope that makes sense

I used it for a while to try it out and I really liked how quickly I could export a final project. Other than that it was pretty hard to get it to do what I wanted.

i think there were some perks and good features about it but the workflow and just clunkiness of the whole thing was just bad enough to make the few good features not even worth using

some misinformation in this thread.


as people said, you should transcode your clips to ProRes 422 (LT) using MPEG Streamclip. You can leave the clips at the same resolution and frame rate.

Once that's done, you can send them into FCP fine. There is no need to conform to 24 or 30p using Cinema Tools. I prefer to, but it's your choice. You can work within a 60p timeline in FCP just fine, that's what Eheath does. It's not your 60p that's the problem, it's that the GoPro format (aside from 960p I believe) just doesn't work very well with FCP, hence the need to transcode.

ive never worked in a purely 60p timeline before but if you wanted your 60fps footage to give you smooth slow motion you will need to conform it right? you can't just change the 60fps footage from 100% to 50% and have it be smooth? or can you..

you can. thats what I have done a bit. obviously if you put your 60p shots to 50% they wont be smooth at all. If your doing minor slow motion like say 90%, 80% or even 75%, it will look acceptable. Not nearly as smooth as conforming your shots, but the thing I dont like about conforming your footage is if you want to play it at full speed, then it looks choppy, so sometimes I just have my timeline in 60p then slow it down normally using FCP.

ok yeah thats what i thought and it can sometimes look choppy if you speed up conformed footage but usually i don't have any  major problems with it. thats how ive done all my vids so far
