Ski Technology in 10 years

10 years is a lot. I refuse to believe that it's even close to maxed out. What has happened in the last 10 years? Well, skis have gotten fatter, rockiered?, and lighter. Not much else has changed. Where will we go to next? Eventually a ski and binding will weigh virtually nothing, bases will be near frictionless, and graphics will be sicker than ever. For all you techier mechanical thinking skiers out there, what technology do you imagine? And what about in 30 years - many of us will be still skiing then.

Good god man! I found this searching for an old thread, and it has no replies! One day there will be something sick like skis with tracking chips so they cant be stolen or something, and maybe electro topsheets that somehow change graphics. Honestly, the progression is necessary, but if it were very slow over the next few years, I'd totally be fine with it.

Skis without edges?  Imagine having a ski material that has some of the properties of a metal edge when you sharpen it, but it can have proper flex as a ski.  Heck, lets assume this crazy uninvented compound makes good base material as well.  Homogenous skis that are so simple, yet functional, and with only one material throughout the ski, cracked edges, delams, and topsheet chips would be a thing of the past.  What could be more durable?

I have no doubt that we'll soon see some of the "smart" and adapting materials make their way into skis. It'll be a long road of trial and errors, lots of gimmicky technology coming and going, but steadily and surely, skis will improve.

Mmm it will be interesting when the adaptive materials (D30 and VPD foam or whatever the evolve into) find their way into skis. As someone said, more or less stiff at high speed but flexible at low speed.... sweet

So if this smart adaptable material gets used in skis manufacturing, I predict a cult-like resurgence of hardcore old school skiing. The challenge for these guys will be ski gnarly lines with old school style woodcore skis and their skill alone with no electronic aids whatsoever. There will be tremedous animosity between the two factions the "smart" skier will be dubbed souless and unskilled, while the old core skier will be considered old retrogrouches.

Maybe I am short-sighted, but skiing has always been fun for me even on 210 straightcut supernarrow stiff skis. Put two boards on my feet and I will have fun regardless...

I agree.  If this is the case, I would most certainly expect an outcome like this. 

With some major breakthroughs, there has to be a split in which people follow.  Think about pedal bikes and motorcycles (not the best example, but you know what I mean).  It's very possible that a major breakthrough in ski technology in the future could do this to skiing.

I guess this depends on just how much of a difference it makes. If it's virtually doing the skiing for you then yeah, sure, but if it just enhances performance it's really no different to advances like rocker and fat skis, or from another sport, advances to golf balls allowing players to hit further and more consistently. I have no problem when a piece of equipment allows an athlete to more fully display/utilise their ability, it's when the equipment starts doing it FOR the athlete that it gets dodgy. For example if someone made a road bike with a motor and put it in the Tour De France that would'nt be OK, but if they found that wheels made of leaves were somehow 3.7% more efficient and people were winning on these leaf-bikes, that would be fine with me.
