White areas on bottom of skis? HELP

alright so i just got some brand new k2 domains

got the mounted and hot waxed

rode it 2 days and now on the bottom where the design is there are white marks almost as if it is dry?

what could this be from? helpp

try to wax them yourself and see if they will absorb the wax. if they will not absorb the wax the place burned your bases and should give you new skis

good luck burning your base. do you guys even know how hot an iron gets?

that is the first sign of a shitty wax. 2 days and already drying out
when you wax a ski the wax has to stay wet on the base for like 3-4 secs after the iron is off the base.

well when they gave it back to me waxed there was no white spots then i rode today for a full day and now there back

whats the temputure the wax is rated for?

i know but at my shop we tell you all this info when you pick them up. no info=bad shop or not enough questions asked
different conditions effect different waxes. wax is supposed to fills the pores of the base and help you float on the cloud of water you create under your skis.

a good way to make money on waxes is to put the wrong wax on the ski for the condition.

well im riding out in the east cost my main mountain is mountain creek in new jeresy and i spend a week up at mount snow every year in vermont.. im leaving Monday for it should i be concerned?


i ride 80% park 20% all mtn

sounds like bad wax, try to wax them yourself with the proper temp wax and see if it works out for you.

i bet it was done on a waxer, not hot waxed,and they used all temp wax, and your bases are fine, they just need a decent wax job.

Looks to me like they just didn't scrape enough wax off. Nothing should come off when you scratch it with your fingernail. If you have a scraper scrape every last piece of wax off it that you can.

At my shop its called a quick wax - essentially is a fiber wheel saturated in cheap all temp wax that heats up and spins. You simply run the skis across is then use the spinning brush on the other end to buff off the excess.

We mostly use it on rental skis - for customer skis, a hot wax with an iron is far superior.

^this. I've seen this on tips and tails pretty often. Give em and good scrape and then go hit your local mountain again. If it comes back it may be something else but the fact that you can scrape it off with your fingernail leads me to think its just excess.

I work at the shop there, we'll take care of you. First you need base cleaner to get all the crap off and then a hott wax. Ask for it to be put in the hotbox and it will penetrate better. K2 bases are super shitty, I see this all the time

3 steps and they will be good as new:

1) belt grind

2) stone grind)

3) nice hot wax with good all temp wax

its about time someone said this. YOU NEED A BASE GRIND! The white on your bases is burnt base called base burn. it is caused by not waxing your skis. Your bases are dehydrated. It needs to be ground off before you get your skis hot waxed. If you do not get a base grind before you wax, the base will not absorb the wax.

you should wax your skis almost every time you go out, or this will happen. Guess what? You need to get another base grind to get rid of the burnt base. While your at the ski store, grab a brick of all temp wax, an iron and a scraper. Wax your skis yourself and do it every time you go out. No more white base.

Same thing happens on my k2 presses... i ski mainly rails so underfoot there is no white but pretty much the whole rest of the ski is white.... if i wax them though (yes i use an iron and an all temp wax) they will go away, but they return in a short amount of time. Me personally I don't really mind it and i have been dealing with this problem for so long that i don't care.
If this is a serious problem and I should fix this please tell me because i don't want to completely ruin the ski, for now i really don't think it makes a big difference.

when skiing on snow, your ski creates heat (friction) from rubbing the base on the snow. Without any wax to protect the base from the snow crystals heat, the base will burn from the friction. The white you see on bases is basically "dead base." It no longer absorbs wax and needs to be belt ground off.

base grind is about $10-$15 depending on your shop. But beer and pizza goes along way with shop techs. Bring them by a pizza and they will do it for free.

I wish I still had a real shop. Used to bring pizza and a six pack and we would sit there and chill. Do this a few times and you should get it done for free. Colorado ski an golf sucks and makes you pay them in money instead of beer.

i read an interesting article about man made snow the other day.
since a lot of resorts are lacking natural snow they are forced to use prodominately manmade snow... the manmade stuff is very coarse and extremely abrasive on your bases. so this year your bases may get dry really quick (quicker than normal) and to use harder waxes (colder temperatures) since it is much harder for the base to strip from the base.
dont know if its legit but it made sense to me.
if the base isnt taking in wax and its a relatively soft wax (anything that isnt toko blue, which is like <14.) than you should go back to the shop. the softer waxes should be ok. the harder wax it may be an iron to cold problem so if you are trying on a hard wax you may need to try a softer one or use a hotter iron.

So you are saying that more friction and heat are generated by skis sliding on snow rather that while base grinding and hot waxing?  And to fix the effects of friction cause by snow, applying much more friction with a belt sander is the solution?  I guess that makes sense.

Have you ever seen a ski after it was grinded? It's not pretty but the wax is what maxes it look good, this kids skis have base burn and that is from exactly what stickerman described. Not to hard to comprehend.

no you are misunderstanding. The base grind just sands of a very small and minimal amount of base, it does create friction (if you ever watch a ski being tuned, you will see sparks) but since its on the belt, it keeps grinding away that old dried out base. Trust me, just go to your shop and get a base grind and tell them to saturate your ski with wax. Or if you are capable of waxing yourself you can do that too.

haha.  ok.  The Montana of Switzerland in my basement is a figment of my imagination.  Not everybody on this website is 14 years old.  Also, shops gets rid of their used equipment for very reasonable prices sometimes.
