Shoulder injury help +k

Ive injured mine lots!! It takes a while just don't re injure it again and you'll most likely be fine. They take a few weeks at the min to stop hurting. I dislocated my left a few years ago and its fine now. Surgery will wreck it unless its totally fucked. Physio is stupid also. You just take it easy and ski but don't do anything to aggressive that if you wipe out you'll hurt it again. Take it out of the sling and keep it moving only to the point wear it doesn't hurt. For a week it will be stiff. But you'll notice it getting better after that. The hard thing is finding a good sleep position!!! Once you find that it will help also.

  I tore my rotator verified 3 separate times verified by MRI. The doc and specialist wanted to do surgery Of course I didn't. there fine now!!!! The only time I notice a little weakness is when bench pressing. Other than that all is good. Physical Therapy doesn't do anything you can do at home!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it moving don't let it stiffen up thats what they will tell you. Time is what you need!!

You say that a doctor isn't really an option? Shoulders are complicated things, if there is a fracture and the shoulder has popped in some way it might be wise to do an x-ray. The body will heal itself and you'll feel alot better if you just give it time, ofc. However, if it doesn't grow right it could mean permanent damage which could lead to even more pain. Atleast get an x-ray. That's my thoughts. Good luck.

Whipper, you're either misinformed, misguided or a garden variety idiot. Because of the experience you mentioned I'll give you the benifit of the doubt and assume that it's some combination of the first two.

I'm no doctor, but I've had problems with both shoulders and surgery in my right and I know shoulders are complicated and inherently unstable. They sacrifice stability for range of motion and because of that thier injuries can be complex. You could have a torn rotator cuff, a seperated AC joint, tendonitis in one of several tendons, bursitis, an impingement, some kind of bone break, damage to your labrum or any number of other things. You get my point here, I'm sure. See a doctor, then a physio (not useless). They can do ultrasound therapy for musle issues and give you exercises and plans for the fastest possible recovery. There are many shoulder injuries that won't heal without help, be it an excersise program or full on surgery, so see someone who knows what they're talking about or you could end up with chronic shoulder pain, and that really blows.   

i tweaked my rotator cuff like a week ago and couldn't move it without sharp pain, but i'm lucky enough to have an orthopedic surgeon for a dad who happens to specialize in knees and shoulders. so he said to me was i'm young (i'm assuming your between 18-27 as well) so theres almost no chance it will need surgery.

keep it immobilized for a week or two, taking ibuprofen (try to avoid opiates) as needed, the anti-inflamitory qualities in ibuprofen will help the healing and get rid of pain. around 2 weeks, give or take, you should have close to or completely full range of motion back. this is when you should start doing some stretches and extremely low weight workouts. think elastic bands, not dumbbells. i'll be right back with some more specific workouts and stretches but the biggest thing is to just wait it out and don't fuck it up again.

ok so apparently my dad can get sued for me giving you this advice lol, so remember seeing a doctor in person is always the best way to go. anyway i'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and give you some advice anyway, and if you use it against my family then your a total piece of shit who deserves to never move your arm again.

assuming its your rotator cuff (which is a big assumption and should not be made by someone other than a doctor), after some time to let it heal (2ish weeks) you should do stretches like raising your extended arm straight in front of you (thumb up) until its all the way extended, don't push it too far but do go until theres some resistance. raising you arm to the side (palm up in the first few weeks, then after time you can adjust your hand so your palm faces down more) is also a good stretch, but be careful not to push it too hard. when your range of motion is getting really good, tie an elastic band to something stationary so that your elbow is bent at 90 degrees in front of you like so





do this exercise with resistance both pulling your arm in and twisting it out about 15 reps on each, reps are more important than weight, and these should be started without any weight at all other than that or your arm. thats about all i got, but remember, its more about not fucking it up again and letting it come back on its own than anything else, and with all your stretches you can experiment but listen to when your body tells you not to move it a certain way. good luck man!

how did you come to the conclusion that it was a rotator cuff issue? or is that the only internal structure of the shoulder that you know?

Unless something has been displaced, rest and then building up the muscles around the joint are your best bet.

if surgery is not an option(cause of money)then you need to completely rest it until there is no more sharp pain when you move it - 4-6 weeks most likely. then proceed to hit the weight room and build up ALL your upper body muscles so support the injured joint.


Or you could just not be a jackass, and go to a docter.

Good advise thats what I was saying. if your shoulder was so hooped you need surgery it would be hanging like a wet noodle not on a ski forum!! If you can move it at all then chances are it will heal. the motions Mrf described are what they had me doing the first few times i went to physio. i went to the doctor many times with shoulder injuries. When I dislocated it wiping out at 60mph my shoulder joint was under my arm pit!! They had to put me out to get it back were it belonged. They said I would need surgery then also and after talking to a dozen or guys who had surgery they all said don't do it there shoulders never got better.

 I was only saying what worked for me. believe me mine was fucked!! I never thought it would get better and after about 20 dislocations i started working out the shoulder slowly got better and better. As mentioned the most important thing is to not get it hurt again right now!! Starting with the exercise above then to weights once it feel a bit better. I'm 6ft 220 bench 350 used to bench 400 years ago. So I lost a little but still pretty Strong. it takes forever but it will heal.

 As far as permanent damage goes thats already done! Surgery will only make it worse in most cases. Unless you have no mobility after a while. Then you might need surgery.

  As I said if its tottaly fucked then youll need surgary. in most cases ive experianced and after spending thousands and thousands of $$$ in physio treatments with ultrasound and other things they did there I knew what I needed to do on my own the last few times. If its a feeling better in a few weeks chances are it will be fine. Like I said. If its hooped it will be still hooped then. Then youll need to go see a doctor for sure!! Dont piss on me for trying to help a guy save some money. If he was in Canada it all would be free exept the physio. There $65 per visit. I went 3-4 days a week for months once and know what they do there. Been for several differant injurys. Ive injured my self enough times to know weather or not I need to go or not now. most people who have never been injured always think its worse than it is from my experiance. If it tottaly fucked then youll know. it wont just be sore or ach. It will be messed up sore and ach like theres no tomorrow!! Thats when you need to see a doctor. if in 3-4 days there any relieve in pain {chances are} your healing.

You're giving oodles of wrong information in this thread. I'll only address some of it. First, your shoulder does not have to be "hanging like a noodle" to be completely fucked. Yeah, dislocations have a tendency to cause serious shoulder problems, but some people can pop their shoulder once, and never have it happen again. I tore my labrum four years ago, and before surgery, popped my shoulder out at least every day. I even popped it out from sneezing too hard on several embarrassing occasions. I got surgery after about 5 months of physio, and about six months after the initial skiing-related injury. This leads me to my next argument: surgery helps a hell of a lot more than it hurts. My shoulder is no where near fixed, despite my doctor guaranteeing a 98% success rate, but I no longer have to worry about dislocating it while washing my hair or other easy shit like that. Now my third point: depending on what part of the shoulder is injured, it doesn't have to "ache like there's no tomorrow!!" to know that it's fucked. When my injury happened (1st dislocation), I was only in severe pain for about a day. I wore a sling for a few days after (as my doctor had prescribed) and after a week I was cleared for all physical activities. My shoulder felt tight and strong. I then played some volleyball, went for a jump serve, and my shoulder came out right quick. This (1 day of pain then no pain at all after a dislocation) continued, and my shoulder came out more and more. Overall, please realize that there are a shit ton of injuries that can happen to a shoulder, and don't assume that since you were so lucky with yours, everyone will be with theirs. Don't post shit if you don't know what you are talking about.

To the OP: Since getting your shoulder checked out isn't an option, just take it real easy for a week or two. Then do some small shoulder exercises, using extremely low weight and high reps. Just google "shoulder rehab exercises" and you should find tons of useful stuff. Whipper is completely wrong when he says that physio doesn't help. If you do it correctly and promptly it will build the muscles up around your shoulder, hopefully tightening it up enough that you won't have any more issues. I hope you get all healed up; shoulder injuries SUCK.

And OP, if you want to bullshit someone, at least do it properly. If you can afford to ski, you can afford a doctor. And since you currently can't spend your time skiing you do have time to see said doctor.

If you don't want to tell your parents or you're afraid the doctor might not let you ski for a while, well that's a different story.

But the bottom line is that nobody on the internet can diagnose you or give you a universal quick fix. I highly doubt anyone in this thread is a qualified medical professional, and chances are in the long run you'll get more bad advice than good, and because the bad advice will be easier to follow, you'll be more inclined to try it. So really, see someone who knows what they're talking about. (That's a doctor or specialist. A real one, not the kind you find on the internet.) Take it from someone who knows, you don't want to screw around when it comes to your shoulders.

  Im saying as you said mine after the first dislocate would come out like yours sneezing or what ever. It came out at least 10 times doing up my shoes or waking up to it being dislocated etc.. To many times to count. You had surgury and its fine now Great!!! Im saying I didnt and mine was the same as yours and its Great. 98%

   Ive talked to lots of guys who had surgery and lots who didnt with the same injury. Belive me I reserched the hell out of it!! Agree to disagree I guess. I was just trying to help buy letting the poor guy know that all is not lost and after a while he can re asses the injury and see who its healing. Arm hanging there was just a figure of speech I thought you would get that since your so cridical on what I said. Read between the lines more carfully then read your post before you hack at me. You did mean well, but you've got to be careful how you present what you say. What I got from your post was that shoulders will heal up on thier own, just wait and see. No need for a doctor or physio and besides, surgery never helps. Now you and I both know that's not true, and if you read closely it's not even what you were saying, but that was how it came across. Sorry to bust your balls, but for god's sake be careful what you tell people.

If this kid has the money to ski, he probably has the money to see a doctor, and I know he has the money for a free drop in clinic. If it doesn't feel better with ice and rest after a few days, see someone who knows what they're talking about should be the advice that's given if you're not a a heathcare prefessional who is knowledgable about the individual case and there's potential for more than just a minor injury. Otherwise someone could get hurt even more. 

There is some good and some horrible information in this thread.

The key to shoulder recovery is rest and immobilisation. Depending on how bad you've hurt it and what you've done try and keep your shoulder in a sling in by your body, minimise movement and keep it stable.

A few questions. Have you lost range of movement? Can you move your shoulder? Where is it sore? Can you move your arm internally keeping your elbow beside your body? Move it externally keeping your elbow beside your body? Can you move your arm up beside your body with your thumb up? Can you bend it behind your back? Can you lift both arms infron with your thumb up keeping scapula control? Do you know how to work your deep muscles for stability? Do you have good posture? What why did you fall on it? Did you feel it pop out?

You really need to see a physio, shoulders are very complicated and if you've never injured them before you won't know what you've done. They're very fiddly things. From dislocations to bursas, tendons, bonde, scap and labrum problems.

If you can't life your arm up yourself then devise a pully that will allow you to lift your arm up beside and in front of you. Try and do this every hour not using your muscles if they hurt and gradually increasing your range of movement. It's really important to keep your range of movement in your shoulder so it doesn't freeze even if you can't do it with your muscles.

Don't do anything that hurts your shoulder, as you don't know what you've done any exercise that hurts to do don't do it.

If you can do the internal and external rotation exercises pictured above to try and stabilise your shoulder and add something like a seated row with therabands that will work on your scapula control to keep your shoulder in place.

Writing this I'm sitting in a sling due to a sublaxations where my humeral head got half stuck out of the socket and I've had a lot of shoulder injuries due to being hyper mobile. *All my advice is due to personal experience and 1000's of dollars spent on physio getting them right so I don't have to have surgery.

 I'm sorry if I came across to disconserning. I didn't mean to make it sound to light. I really do know how serious a shoulder injury is having had several. I probably should have had surgery on my left. But has worked out doing exercise and {compensating} on some movements. From what I have gathered over the years is even with surgery they still don't come back 100% for some injury's. I don't want to argue about it. Just what happen to me. Of course every injury and person is different. if the shoulder isn't getting any better after a couple of weeks for sure go see a doctor. I'm not one agreed. No more injury advise from me.{probably a good thing} I tend to suffer it out Not recommended. I hope your shoulder isn't to serious and you heal 100% my friend. Later

labrum reconstruction is what youre thinking about. almost all rotator cuff inujuries heal 100% because its muscle which regenerates super easily, so surgery is "a breeze". the labrum is essentially cartilage, and doesnt really heal well at all. thats why having a labrum injury as a pitcher is almost a death sentence.

I would personally recomend against labrum reconstruction if it isnt causing you too many problems. Personally, the physio exercises didnt do shit for the stability of my shoulder. what helped was putting on actual muscle mass on my upperbody. I gained about 20lbs of upperbody muscle and my shoulder is super stable now.

and i had my labrum reconstructed along with the shoulder capsule, and then proceeded to tear all the sutures within a week of surgery by slipping in the shower and throwing my arm up to catch my balance. It was an awful esperience and my shoulder was completely useless for a solid 6 months. so there are some extenuating circumstances why i am against labrum surgery.

I crashed 2 years ago and my shoulder did hurt for 8 weeks. I took pain pills, tried to stand my arm still and didn't go to the doctor because I was scared he would told me that I couldn't ski or do sports for a while. The result is that i often ,and still today, have pain, can't move my shoulder completeley and 3cm lower than on ther other side.

The best thing when you have bigger nonfractur-injuries is surgery or at least a controlled and conservative healing process. Wearing a sling is the worst thing you can do to your shoulder joint if it isn't a 100 procent necessary. I cant really express that in English, but when a joint isn't move in a while it looses most of its flexibilty which can not or only very hard earned back completeley.
