Karma System

I'm curious to hear what people think of the Karma system. When we launched it and made the major tweaks on it, we did a pretty good job of getting everyone to agree that the 'best' users were on the list.

However, in another thread, I heard a few complaints that it has lost its validity.


What do you think about the people that are on there?

I agree its a lot of orange names, but to be fair that is because most of them do a pretty good job of being stand up members of Newschoolers. Everyone likes what they do, and they score high.

Let me hear some thoughts. We can always do an upgrade to the Karma Algorithm, as its not points its an overall rolling score. Just like how Google updates its search algorithm.

Member ratings need to have more sway compared to the other things that give and subtract karma.

However, I have a question Bishop. Does the fact that you have so much karma make your rating of others worth more karma points than noobs? If not, I think we should integrate that. It just seems that long time users who are well respected by the NS community should have words that weigh more than someone who's been on the site for a week.

Just a thought though.

Coming from someone who's been on this site way too fucking long:

I think it's as simple as this. If you insist on having a rating system for people, make it a like/dislike or thumbs up/thumbs down system, but WAY MORE IMPORTANTLY, each post should have a thumbs up or thumbs down of its own. so if some idiot posts something like "you're gay, tom wallisch rides for salomon, someone reading it will see that it's been voted down really hard and not to take it too seriously.

as it is, people piss someone off and the person rates them 0/10, or they do something cool and they rate them 10/10, with no regard to how quality any given post is

i think this is the only system that has any significance-- with the current karma system i think youre getting anything but a significant appraisal of any given member or post, and putting any stock in the current karma numbers is silly

just my 2 cents

agree with Ginko also

Most of the top 100 members don't even post anymore, to me it seems like most of them are on that list because they are old, have orange names, and still do or used to write blogs. Am I close with this?
Overall though I think the karma system is pretty decent as is. Personally I don't pay attention to it very much because I've been here long enough to I recognize who the legit members are and who's not. I think this question could be better answered by newer members who actually need the karma system to judge other members.

i agree with this... kinda like the system that youtube that youtube went to. you can still keep karma points, but instead of the current system, each thumbs up is +1, and each thumbs down is -1

Karma system should be expand to say -10 to 20? or just like 0 - 40. I constantly see people saying "I already have you at 10/10" or vice versa. Other than that though I'd say it's a fairly good system

i think it does to a point.

i can think of two right off hand who you can tell are assholes because of their karma to post ratio, which is how i judge someone when i see them post an d bag post and then i look at their ratio and im all like ohhhhhh i see.


here is a concept which has been tossed up before and goes along with what RubberSoul said, a like system which gives you a karma point everytime someone likes it, this can also have a dislike button but i feel that would be abused in threads in nsg about religion and politics that become shit shows.

i am sure there are some great ways that we can improve the system but the only problem is do the admins want to put the time in to revamp the system?

I can see where youre coming from and understand youre point, but something seems a bit odd about having weighted karma distribution.

Im kind of new here, but have read the forums and the websites content for years, i consider myself somewhat knowlegable (sp? irony.) and the idea that my opinion of a post or another user should mean less than somebody elses opinion seems a bit demeaning/discouraging. Seems like it would just create a NS elite, a NS-NWO.

The karma system as it is now has helped me so far in my time posting in the forums. ive done a couple of deals in the bst forum and i can not stress enough how useful it is to get a rough idea as to how legit a seller/buyer is.

Ive confused myself with this post, so feel free to take karma away from me(lol), but i think what im getting at is basically PEOPLE WITH HIGH KARMA BEING ABLE TO GIVE MORE KARMA = SOMEWHAT BAD IDEA........ KARMA OVERALL = GREAT IDEA

i hope someone can pick out something useful from this jumbled post, -k commmmmin up for me!

Change the top rated members list like this

1 list of the top rated orange names / red and green names
2 list of the top rated blue names,
3 idk but maybe list of the worst rated members lolz

i like this idea. most orange names aren't that helpful to me at least.. some are like onenerdykid comes to mind but overall bluenames are more helpful so they should have their own category

I think activity should play a role too because several of the top rated havent been on for 30 days. Like they might have been fucking amazing a few years ago, but they dont contribute now

my personal opinion is that the system clearly has flaws. I recently realized that there are maybe 5-10 blue names on the entire top 100...one of which was myself until a few days ago...the people who have been on here know who contributes good material and who doesn't...any person can quickly sift through the bullshit and what is actually good and will quickly realize that there are people that post quality vs shit. the system is a just a nice reference for people who have no clue who would maybe be expected of contributing a holistic amount of content to the site...except the pros who are on there for what ever reason. The problem is that we are trying to rank 100 people out of 150,000 or what ever the amount of members is. It is tough...but you have to consider most who generates discussion and interest in different areas...and for that the system works well. Not sure if any of that makes sense but I at least tried to explain my opinion

Members should also feel like they actually have a chance of making the list. Looking at it now, they're going to think no way in hell, so why bother being concerned?

I think that if someone gets -karma, there should be a mandatory area where the person giving the -k will have to give a brief solution as to why they are giving someone -k. Then the Mods or someone goes through the comments and if they are crap reasons, the person does not lose the karma. That way, people don't lose karma just because someone feels like being an ass. haha

I don't think every member wants to have a job in the ski industry. There are plenty of members more deserving than most of the orange names on the list that have careers totally unrelated to skiing.

^^you hit the nail on the head! another one who i think deserves a spot would be onenerdykid, gives the most solid advice to kids in GT !

I know the karma code is pretty much a CIA secret but i've figured out/experienced some factors that definitely need some tweaking, i'll run through em in short...

Sign up date: members from like 2002 have ridiculous high karma. obviously karma should rise slowly during how long you've been on here, but shit is ridiculous, they easily get 10 or 20x more karma than a constructive active member from the past few years, i'd say lower that influence a little...

recent activity,from what i can tell this isn't factored in at all, OG members who've been inactive for years will still have skyhigh karma...
imho this should pretty much be a -1 , 0 or +1 factor
members who haven't shared or replied or uploaded anything in the last 30 days should get factored a -1 and their karma should slowly drop, members who are active on anything from monthly to weekly basis should get a 0 = karma unaffected, weekly active members should get a +1 and a slow karma rise ...

Contributions:
posts should not be counted up towards karma at all imho, if you guys were to implement a "like" feature in the forums that could be a much better parameter !

Uploads: pics and videos should obviously contribute a lot since this is what this site is all about, i think this factor is already pretty much on point.

Blogs and reviews: also pretty much on point ....

rating pictures should influence karma with a threshold(or however you call it in english) so you get +k for each day where you rate more than 5 or 10 uploads, this would also discourage people from massively exploiting it and rating everything the same without judging the content ...

just my 0.02$

this is why i don't get the whole karma system completely, some people have been on here for ages without significant indications of contributions and they get mad karma ....

which makes me believe sign up date is a major factor in karma assignment ...

but then there are peole like yourself who pretty much crush my theories .... :/

the concept behind karma is you do good and get good in return...do bad, get bad in return...we arent suppose to understand how it works on this site or in real life..just kinda gotta go with the flow and do good...so good is done to you in return! a silly number is a wierd measure of "karma" but it at least offers some understanding of whos been good and bad...(santa is the only one who really knows the good/bad list though)...

it would be cool to have a better breakdown of what your karma means. sort of like the movie rating breakdown on imdb. you can see a little histogram of how many people rate you 10, 9, 8, etc.

oneryderkid and flashkick101 are good examples. every single one of these guys posts are 100% solid, their karma barely shows it.

a more relevant piece of info next to everyone's icon is when they joined. most members who joined before 2007ish make pretty solid posts.

ex) im not going to take gear advice from some guy/kid who joined in 2010-current unless he really sounds like he knows whats up. but some guy who joined in 2004? definitely going to take into account what he has to say. i take that into account way more so than his post count and karma.
